    The circus is coming to town! But to get there it normally has to travel by train. Here the Circus train is seen heading north through Kalamazoo Michigan on the Grand Elk Railroad, running as train 101. The train is composed of 61 cars, and is led by two modern General Electric GEVO locomotives. Including in the consist are stock cars for the animals, cars for the performers to ride in, and flat cars with other supplies loaded on them. At Kalamazoo they negative the tight spaces with their train, cutting the city in half for nearly 8 minutes as they head north. The train crosses the Amtrak Michigan Line on their way north which also puts them past the old BO Tower. BO tower is slated to close soon, so seeing the circus train pass it was a nice treat too.
    Filmed with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus.

    I used to work for the NS when they operated this line. I was fortunate enough to catch this train out of Elkhart IN and yard it in Grand Rapids Mi. Thanks for taking me back yet again!

    I wonder how many people used the "I got stopped by the Ringling Bros. Circus Train!!" as their excuse for being late for work that day......Very cool video-Cheers!!

    Imagine the immense impact load between the tracks and the train wheel. Awesome engineering

    You could sure tell it was over because the cars looked empty of people and the large open door . Hardly anyone on the platforms between the cars. Young people can say what they want about the boomers, but my generation had a blast.. I remember how sad I was when I found out that the Royal American midway would never be returning to our city back in the early 70s and I had waited for it to come every summer throughout the 60s. Great video and I believe I commented on it years ago, I'm feeling a little nostalgic.

      Hi Alison, those are called "Diamonds" where the tracks cross one another. Usually, it's a different railroad company crossing over another company's railroad track. I've seen where 3 different railroad companies cross over each other's tracks through a diamond.

      There's one on the East Coast Mainline near the bridge over the Trent, and there used to be several others. After the formation of British Railways in 1948, most were eliminated.

      Want to see a crazy "diamond", check this on out in g-maps: 41.082427, -80.621916 It's not a 90 degree crossing like this one, more of a 25 degree crossing... two mainlines crossing two mainlines...

    So the Phantom 2 vision plus is the drone that comes with a camera as well right.. And surely you have a ground mic somewhere right or is that coming from the drone because the sound is great

      @MichiganCentralLines  8 лет назад

      +HoustonRailFan ™ Yes it does, but I would reccomed the Phantom 3 standard now, it is better for battery and camera. If you look carefully you can see me set up near the diamond for a couple clips

    • @tencents6
      @tencents6 7 лет назад

      The cattle cars, coaches and flatcars may be sent off to other railroad companies to be used as their own rolling stock (although some may be put in a museum.) Same with some of the circus train carrier cars...while the rest could be scrapped. The cars, buses, and front loader may be sold off, or kept by their owners

    Does any know why their is cable like housing for trunking on top of the passenger cars, and why..

    • @kildrummer
      @kildrummer 7 лет назад +1

      A great deal of the on board electricity needs are met by diesel generators.It is used for everything you would use it for at home as the train is home to the circus staff while they are touring.
      Everything from cooking,heating, lighting,hot water,televisions,and keeping the stock cars for the elephants & horses warm is supplied by the generator.
      So they need the cabling to be robust enough to carry that power- hence the seperate ducting for it.
