Just a little tip, when you identify a handful of dirt and rock on your detector, check your other hand before you throw it away lol. Sometimes you may get two targets in your hands....
go to 1000 trails Cottonwood Arizona and look for stony meteorites near the river no metal detector required but lots of water and a good as strong magnet
Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone!! I saw my very first Fireball; one that appeared no further than 1-3 miles away! I even officially reported my sighting to American Meteorite Society where i was then able to have my sighting collaborated by more than a dozen other witnesses in my state, 2 in my same city/county and the rest on the borders of neighboring states. I'd feel safe to assert that i likely look up stargazing and the like, probably 90% of the year, basically almost every day! Mind you i live in Wisconsin where we have many, many more bitter cold nights than not ;) lol The map AMS.com provides (via Google Earth) with pinpoints and sighting lines placed for each witnesses' report. With that being said, you're then on your own as far as hunting anything down as its obvious they nor any law official will give out any information as to recovery, projected landing if there was any, etc. People are greedy these days, sadly. I wouldn't sell my find, unless i found a substantial amount to where i had a satisfactory amount for my own personal collection :) It's my hobby though borderline obsession. Do you have any tips on how to estimate a trajectory path and/or potential geographical landing area to scout out by utilizing both the AMS Map of witness reports as well as using just my precise eye witness account of my own personal sighting?? I know exactly where I saw it (WSW) and through my research and calculations so far, especially based off of how close+ large the Fireball was, also supported by the individual witness reports based correlating spot on with their precise closeness to my location and outwards. I only own a handheld metal detector but it does have quite the sensitivity, a sensitivity cancel - out button when possible interference occurs... but the issue is, you cannot cover much ground in a reasonable amount of time with a handheld without killing your back at least lol so we will be purchasing a metal detector asap. Until then, going to continue my relentless, avid research into hopefully finding a more precise, better narrowed down search area of a potential landing sight. :) ;)
How far were you guys hunting from the train tracks at franconia?depending on how far you guys were out its possible that the irons your finding is from the two trains that collided and exploded there over a hundred years ago.
I found a big rock that has black crystals in side the outer layer is all burnt and pitted my magnet sticks to the outside but my Metal detector doesn’t pick up any metal but you can clearly see flacks in it. The magnet is strongly attracted to it its very heavy for it size its 12 pounds. Why wouldn’t my Metal detector pick up a signals and the rock still attract a magnet. Confuse why.
Hey Jim. I was wondering if you are on here much. I uploaded a video today or a rock and I got it slabbed today as well....I think it is a meteorite......but not 100%. Do you recommend any tests?
Hello Christian, I would check it out with a 10X loop first and look for small metal flakes on the cut surface. Most meteorites are chondrites and will show the metal flakes. If you can send a pic I can give you my best guess. Good luck, space rocks are really exciting to find!
"HEY PALEMANJIM2" not being the rich type I bought a bargain buy detector at PRO-BASS & seems to work " O K " so my question is to you ,would it be considered a waste of time hunting ( SPACE-STONES ) with it or should I spend another 5 bills for the one that you guys are using ? THANKS-4-GOOD-VIDEO
+Chad Simmons It may work. To find out you can buy a cheap 5-10 gram meteorite on eBay for $20 or so place it out in a field somewhere to see how high the detector will detect it. Or you can buy a used Gold bug 2 for $400 to $500, one of the best for meteorite hunting.....
"THANKS" for the advise & this cheapie detector finds metal all right & here in Missouri we don't have much bare ground that may be an advantage for space stone hunting
hey Paleomanjim2 after 3 yrs of hunting, iv'e located 4 different places in Kansas City Mo with several good & some very weathered stone-iron-nickel specimens using a harbor freight $50.00 detector there is one spot in the ghetto of KCMO that has maybe 500 pounds from i big meteorite busted up by utility excavating many yrs ago,so far i found 4 different types of specimens ,but weathering is a issue for most of them, they are crusted in thick rust ,that kept them from being noticed
Delaware Digger fucking atx we use that items. the frequency to very good 10 to 13 but we never find any thing even metal or gold either and keep digging then after 10 feet nothing found and signal gone
joracer1 Yes, Most are worth $1/ gram, some are worth more than gold. But, for most meteorite hunters it is all about the excitement of the find and the science behind it, actually finding a rock from outer space, that is he really cool part. I have never sold a meteorite, and never will!
So I have a question, I'm looking to get into relic hunting and buying a metal detector which is what lead me to your video. Anyway, I've been looking at detectors and I know the ATX is pretty expensive so I'm sure it can filter different kinds of metals... Aren't meteorites usually iron? Why don't you filter out lead so you don't find lead bullet slugs like that .22 LR slug you found? Are lead meteorites also common? I'd think they'd melt to nothing on entry. One other question, do you own any other metal detectors? I'm thinking about getting a Garrett AT Pro so I can hunt in the creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakes around here. I doubt as many hunters have gone to the trouble of wading or swimming around in the local bodies of water, might be more likely to find good stuff. The AT Pro is only affordable one I could find that's waterproof and has good reviews.
John Heartless The AXT is a Pulse Induction type metal detector. It cannot distinguish between lead and iron or other type metals. Most meteorites contain visible metal flecks usually 1mm or so in size. The small metal flecks are composed primarily of nickel and iron which is what the metal detector sounds off on. Lead is not a major component of most meteorites......
Anywhere from 5 US cents a gram up to 1000 USD a gram, In Perspective, Gold, Currently on 7-21-2016 is about 32 USD a gram for 18KT. Franconia Meteorites fypically fall about 50-110 cents a gram. (did you get the pun...Fall?... OMG I need some friends) hahaha Cheers from Tucson, Arizona
Delaware Digger fucking atx we use that items. the frequency to very good 10 to 13 but we never find any thing even metal or gold either and keep digging then after 10 feet nothing found and signal gone
Hello, How are you? I have a Mariche meteorite. I want to communicate with you. Thank you. I am ready to send the pictures .. It weighs 150 grams and it has green and yellow glass and a burning crust.
Just a little tip, when you identify a handful of dirt and rock on your detector, check your other hand before you throw it away lol.

Good point! thanks
Hint! The ATX has a "pinpoint" mode.
That rubber chicken sound!
Your large "hot rock" was an Aubrite! DOH !
Cool video Paleoman
I saw and heard a meteorite fall here in CT. Should I try to find it? It landed near a swamp in the woods.
What setting do you have your detectors on? And Nice work on your bounty.
a helpful tool for ya mate - pinpointer
go to 1000 trails Cottonwood Arizona and look for stony meteorites near the river no metal detector required but lots of water and a good as strong magnet
I found one luckily, that is 25 grams. I wonder whats its his value.

I have seen lots of meteors, but never a fireball. You are very lucky to have seen a fireball! It must have been very exciting, Thanks for sharing

How do you know those tiny pieces are meteorites and not slag or many other items that look similar that are magnetic.

Gold bug is great, I heard the Whites GMT is even better, and can do coins and jewelry too.
It would be great if you happen to accidentally stumble upon a nice gold nugget out there LOL

Very weird. Any way to view pictures?
Wow you found one i have one in my home somewere

Does the ATX tells you how deep is it? Like the AT Gold?

Go’in meteorite hunting tomorrow outside a ghost town in SW NM. Will let you know of any finds. See how my new Garrett works.
There are a lot of meteorites out there, good luck with it!
is useful to meteorites garrett ac 150?
I am not familiar with that model, but it should work....
the bullet probably some cowboy shoot XD
Are these metorite worth anything?

i found a 2x1 in 1.9 ounce chunk of nickel meteorite in Argentina
Is a hot rock a meteorite?
I thought it was slightly radioactive - not a meteorite - could be wrong though

if the high-tone metal if low tone gold or other mineral
Gentelmen drop your detectors down and go find them by eye . Great spot .I wish to be there.
