- Sherlock Hound was a Japanese-Italian anime that, thanks to the involvement of one Hayao Miyazaki, went from being just another Sherlock Holmes tale to a beautifully animated cult classic. What was the history behind Sherlock Hound? Why did it almost get killed by a lawsuit? And are the episodes without Miyazaki's involvement just as good?

KB is his name and talking about old animation is his game! If you want deep analysis and history on the realm of retro anime and old animation, then you've come to the right place. Be warned though. Being a possum means he loves consuming trash, media-based or otherwise.
Sherlock Hound is licensed and distributed by Discotek Media.
I saw the Arabic dub of this anime when it aired in Egypt in the 90s, this was basically my introduction to anything Sherlockian before I started watching more faithful adaptations. Also, this version of Ms. Hudson was one of my early cartoon crushes as a kid so imagine young me's disappointment when I watched more faithful Sherlock Holmes adaptations. I ended up buying the UK released DVD when I was in the UK for a while, too bad it only had the English dub, which sadly isn't very good.
I'm not surprised this show was a success in Japan, the Japanese love Sherlock Holmes, in fact it's one of the character's biggest markets along with the UK and the US. I do remember there was a previous Anime using the Sherlock Holmes character in the 60s, which also featured Arsene Lupin.
22:56 just hearing Glomgolds voice coming out of Moriarty is both hilarious and fitting
Fun fact. Hamilton Camp, the original voice of Fenton Crackshell voiced Moriarty in the english dub.
Critics back then: it's just a stupid kids' show, cartoons are dumb
Critics now: how come they could have this level of quality animation quality back then
As a huge Sherlock Holmes and anime fan, this series means so much to me. There isn't anyone really talking about it so thank you for this video! It made me want to rewatch some episodes now.
There were a lot of Franco-Japanese productions in the 80s. Ulysses 31 and Cities of Gold off the top of my head.
Once Upon a Time... Man, Space and Life were the Franco-Japanese productions I grew up watching. While the entire Once Upon a Time... franchise is created by Procidis, Once Upon a Time... Man was animated by Tatsunoko Productions and Once Upon a Time... Space and Life were animated by Eiken.
@@madsceptictrooper6803 Yeah, I grew up with those too. :)
Ulysses 31 is my childhood gem and noone seem to remember it except you!
@@ELEKTROSKANSEN It was pretty big in France!
Fun fact: the fact Hayao Miyazaki worked on Sherlock Hound is used as the main selling point in Finland.

I never knew Sr. Pelo used to work in the TV animation industry, wow!
This is a hands down anime version of Sherlock Holmes!
Here's my cast list if they had English-British version:
Derek Griffiths or Tony Slattery as Sherlock Hound
Robert Powell as Dr. Watson
Joise Lawrence as Mrs. Hudson
Kenny Everett or Graeme Garden as Dr. Moriarty
Tim Brooke-Taylor as George/Todd
Bill Oddie as Smiley
&
Mel Smith as Inspector Lestrade
Fun Fact: one of Miyazaki's very last TV projects was for a different Euro-Anime, one that was also produced in conjunction with an American studio, no less:
he was an animator on the pilot for Inspector Gadget.
Gadget's co-creator, Jean Chalopin, was recently in the news as part of that whole FTX scandal.
Therapist: White Calimero isn’t real, he can’t hurt you
24:48 Holy shit, I was not expecting to see the main character injecting needle drugs in this upbeat and whimsical children's cartoon.
About time someone went in-depth about this one 👍
My sister bought the DVDs of the german dub when they were released in 2016. We watched the series with our parents, and we ALL LOVED IT!! For us, it's mostly heart warming, with funny or exciting moments. Not that they are too little funny and exciting moments, but there is an entirely "mood", "atmosphere" through the whole series: it's nice. And that's the most we observed. But, with it's action scenes, mystery scenes and funny scenes, so with the whole story every episode has, it was exciting to watch it, and even the German Dub got "just" the "Karaoke-Play-Along-Instrumental-Version" of the Opening and the Ending as the german Op and Ed, I love these instrumental versions very much, they are so beautiful to listen to, even today! Whenever I have bad time, both songs are so peaceful, beautiful and exciting to listen to, that they are raise my mood.
And I have no problem that every episode have other focuses each: With that, I think, the anime is well balanced; we have more action focused episodes, some with more mystery focus, some with more character focus and so on. And even if Ms Houndson has not so much to do in the entirely anime, she is although an important character for me, 'cause of the few episodes she had, and the most important one with her past. So even if she is more in the backround after "her episode", you *know* at this point that she is more than just a housekeeper and someone you better make not angry. So you know that she has skills and more. Sure it would be interesting to see more of her in the entirely series, if miyazaki worked on it in the later productions, but I think it's okay like it is. 'Cause it's still an "Sherlock Holmes" show, not a "The Housekeeper of S.H." show. But she *has* her role, an important one, even if she is an emotional support for holmes, watson or their guests (clients) and think that's important as well. (And much better if she is "just there", like characters are in other series/animes sometimes).
So Miyazaki or not, I like the many variations of the various episodes. With that, it's not boring at some point at the series, but every adventure is new and other than the other episode before, so with that, it's exciting ALL the time AND just a nice mood to internalise it every time, especially with the Ending... ^_^
My sister is watching Beaststars at the moment so I figured I'll give this anthropomorphic animal tv show a shot as well. Thanks for the info.
If you wanna be technical, in "The Small Client", the girl wanted Hound to find a cat. The note she was carrying that was written by her father had a secret message which helped Hound find him and Moriarty.
7:40 Ahhhh yes, "Euro-anime."
If you were a kid in the Eighties, who watched a lot of Nickelodeon, you'll know exactly what he's talking about.
Belle and Sebastian,
The Adventures of the Little Prince,
and of course, The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Sweet memories.❤
I remember having seen a few episodes of this when I was a kid when Rai1 had reruns of it. As always, you did a really fantastic job.
Outstanding review, good sir! One of my favorite shows ever! Whenever I see "Sherlock Hound" or anything related to it, my heart flutters with excitement! Ooh, Mrs. Hudson... ^^
Shes a cartoon dog. Wipe your drool up and find a real woman
Hound and Hudson would've made a wonderful couple.
For how much I (and everyone else, for obvious reasons) can love Miyazaki, I must be honest: that man is "limited" by his own style.
As you shown in this video, he is the non plus ultra of animation and effort, but he always recycle his own characters and plots, ignoring the source material.
Even Monkey Punch wasn't happy about how he transformed Lupin into a super kind character and Fujiko into a Kryptonian Rambo (not his words, of course).
If he had directed all of the episodes, we would have ended with a top notch animation, but no mysteries at all and probably Mrs. Hudson would have stole the role of main character, by the end.
I remember this show back when it was broadcasting in my country dubbed in Arabic. While not too popular it was a pretty memorable and entertaining show. And I also like to add that miss Hudson really makes me feel weird. PLEASE TELL ME I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE 😭
I was born in Cuba and I loved watching anime. I remember watching old school anime from Saint Seiya, Ranma 1/2, sailor moon, Digimon(fav), Astro boy, Pokemon, dogtanian and many more. Heck, I remember also watching a version of Zorro that was made in Japan.
love you for covering this and love your channel in general -- please keep making great content!
A lot of the episodes are based on original Sherlock Holmes stories; just among examples from the episodes you selected as your best-of, there's A Small Client (The Engineer's Thumb), The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (the story of the same name), Treasure Under the Sea (The Bruce-Partington Plans), The Crown of Mazarin (The Beryl Coronet), I think The Sacred Cross Sword could be based on The Musgrave Ritual. The anime just uses the original premise as the concept for the story, changes the context a bit (e.g. an actual submarine going missing instead of just the plans for one), and makes Moriarty the culprit every time.
Out of the Miyazaki episodes, A Small Client, probably comes closest to the source material and almost takes a very dark turn; the original story starts with a man who had his thumb lopped off coming into Watson's doctor surgery, and in the Miyazaki episode there's a distressing moment where Moriarty stands over Martha's father with a cleaver as he hangs from the window, Holmes very narrowly stops him from losing his thumb in the exact same manner as the literary character. There are also small references to the book Holmes in Miyazaki's characterization and design; I noticed that Hound-Holmes 'stores' his letters and documents by pinning them to walls and furniture with daggers, something Conan Doyle's character is mentioned doing in one story (though he kept all his nailed to the mantlepiece).
My childhood! Thanks for making this video, since this anime is pretty unknown nowdays its not often you see youtube content about it.
First I learn the term "Eurocentric" anime from Pop Arena, now I learn "Euroanime" from you. Your videos are so educational!
Immediately I saw a couple of frames I knew Miyazaki was involved.
Definitely gave me Nausicaa vibes.
This was and still is a childhood favorite of mine I would always rent from the local video store. I was blessed to be able to purchase the entire set on DVD just this year with both Dub and Sub versions.
traverse town music in a sherlock hound video? ok guess I have to subscribe uwu
Years ago, I came across a British anime magazine with a 1981 date. Beautiful color glossy thing. American trends sometimes start in the UK.
Excellent documentary! I started watching it and it’s amazing! When I heard it didn’t had a wide English release, here in RUclips I found the Spanish version- from Spain, all episodes! The dub in Spain is so charming and accurate.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the English dub, which included some classic staples of American voiceover: Lewis Arquette, Hamilton Camp, and Pat Parris
The English dubs of 99% of anime are better than any other version and nothing you say will change my mind
Such a fun show. I lament the loss of access to the DVD set when my roommate and myself parted ways.
yay! Lupin the third! I'm also curious to check out Sherlock Hound and that little black chick now.
p.s So Sherlock Hound is pretty much a reverse Lupin.
You sucker punched me right in the nostalgia by using the "Ulises 31" theme son in the back ground.
omg, this video are so good, thanks man...
Great video! Curiosity: in Italian dubbing, Professor Moriarty speaks with a Turin stress!
So many animes in my childhood... Maya the Bee, Heidi, Girl of the Alps, Moomins, Wiki, and so many more. Germany in the late 80s and early 90s had quite diverse TV shows.
Really loved this video! Loved hearing more about it's origin and production. Also, what episode is 20:44 from?
with the anime team call out like a super hero team kinda makes me want a anime about making this anime
Mrs. Hudson was voiced by Pat Parris.
This used to play on Canal Famille here in Québec. Blast from my childhood right there.
Canada has far better entertainment than America in that case
@@carlycarmine3858 depends a lot XD
@@ArninoStorm I've heard that a lot of American cartoon shows from the 90s and early 2000s were actually made in Canada
Since Ulysses 31 was released in 1981, you would think that TMS and DiC would have finished the series by then. You also got one English city name pronunciation right when you get another one wrong, despite both of their names ending the same way, 'Plymouth' and 'Portsmouth'.
I remember Sherlock Hound warm me up for some Anime stuff and and the lifestyle of the late Victorian era. And I don't how many times I laughed at the police chase scenes. XD
Wow, Miyazaki looked like Austin Powers when he was younger LOLOLOLOL
Excuse me! What version of “Objection” did you used from 27:47 to 29:00, I can’t find it anywhere
Tunabout Jazz Soul.
Check the credits next time. I have all the songs used in order there.

I bought the box set for this but not watched it yet. We got another 2 week lockdown in the UK, so I know what I’m watching now lolol
Heard of it but still haven't seen it...yet.
Sherlock Hound is my favorite anime which is from legendary Hayao Miyazaki because this anime has to the extend to Dogtanian and the three muskehounds
Sherlock hound it awesome and great to watch
What is the viking euro-anime called? The one with the smart kid viking as main character... where can I find it?
It’s Vicky the Viking.
So what anime was the redhead playing the saxophone from?
Is Montana licensed?
There were Spain coproductions as well see “Los Tress Mosqueperros” an adaptation of The Tree Musketeer in a world of Dogs, also Baner y Flapy the life of a domesticated squirrel that is raised by a cat. & my favorite one a dual series Once Upon a Time... Man (Érase una vez... el hombre) Once Upon a Time... Life (Érase una vez... la Vida) though I think thats a French coproduction?

Pretty sure the main reason this show is remembered is the amount of furry art involving Mrs. Hudson
Furry art is weird if you want my opinion
@@carlycarmine3858 si lo es
Why did anime end up coming to most countries except English speaking ones? Like not even in Britain or Canada. Like I get the licensing laws of America are weird, but the other ones I don’t get.
Who dubbed the show?
Where can I find the original Japanese version?! I like the dub, but it’s too easy to find it.
Nyaa
Both the Japanese and English language audio tracks are advertised as being on the Discotek Blu-Ray.
What is the song you play in your intros??
Hmmm, let's watch a fun history video on an anime. *Sees Mazinger* I just can't get away from giant robots somedays.
It's true what they say, when you get down to the history of japanese pop culture, it all goes down to Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Mazinger.
What;s the title of the intro song?
ローマンRoman - I Miss You (w/ マクロスMACROSS 82-99)

It seems like the mystery aspect of the series is pretty lacking. Disappointing. The animation and humour seems nice though, but it's definitely something that I'd have rather preferred it in my younger years. Maybe I could enjoy it as a casual watch at the end of a long day
I just got through the entire anime and I have to say that the show is fun to watch, but the earlier episodes had better animation.
Please do TMS sonic X cause man the animation in that... :/

Awesome essay, but please learn to pronounce ghibli. it's not gi-bli. But ji-bli, as in dʑíbɯɺi with a JI sound. Kinda takes down your meticulously researched essay down a notch if you're that sloppy with the details. Makes one question if you're equally sloppy with the rest of your (very enjoyable) essays, which is a bummer.
It's an Italian word, it gets pronounced as written. The only bummer here is your stick-up-the-arse comment
@@mariuspoppFM The pronounciation of ジブリ is JI-BU-RI.
