    Ratta has launched a new top-of-the-line ceramic nibbed pen for their Supernote devices, and it's called the Heart of Metal Gen 2. It is being marketed as "The most classic luxury digital pen EVER." Well, ok, that's a bold claim, let's put it to the test :)

    I bought a SuperNote, partly because of the pen. I write with a fountain pen on paper. The HOM2 pen didn't disappoint. I dropped my HOM2 pen, and the driver part broke. It would clink when I tipped the pen. Sometimes I'd have a big thick line, and sometimes I'd have a normal line. Eventually, the nib pushed up into the body. I took it apart and found that the driver had finally come loose from the head. I glued the parts back together. It fixed all the things for me. It's a better writing experience than before I dropped it.

    As a fountain pen user, the not having to press down is part of what makes one feel like one, and replicating that with an EMR pen and e-ink device is difficult, because a fountain pen that is properly tuned will write under its own weight just laying in the webbing between you thumb and forefinger. If this pen does that, maybe we finally have a good stand in for it digitally. That's pretty exciting.

    I have enjoyed by original HOM pen chosen when I originally purchased my Supernote. I recently purchased the Lamy Safari Twin pen. It’s great when I’m signing a check, contract or other as I carry my SN everywhere. Nope- I’ve never written ink on my SN.
    But really, no pen can solve my growing disappointment with the jagged result of writing on my Supernote. I love the focused product design but more and my eyes wander to the brushes and quality of script on Remarkable and even the Kindle Scribe (good grief!).
    I wish most of this could be solved in software, but it looks like it wont be.
    Meanwhile the response time of the Boox Tab series has me wishing for that on a Supernote platform.
    Shopping for a new color/weight pen won’t satisfy forever in this crazy world.
    For now I’m sticking with SN to avoid consumerism fever and landfill waste.

    I have found on my HM2 pen the cap has become loose and is about at the point where it doesn't even stay on as a cap and most definitely doesn't stay on the back as writing. It started out great but I am unimpressed by this fact. The design, weight, looks are all good but they have not figured out how to make the cap work like a regular cheap pen. I really do miss the erase button on my lamy or even the eraser on the back.

    Without a free hand for the _'Eraser Gesture'_ when laying in bed I use the Lamy with the erasure button yet had to colour the button else without exception was forced to spin the pen around looking for *a black erasure button set in black plastic,* and yet... even though coloured am still distracted though to a lesser degree.
    Whoever circumvents this problem would be way ahead of the pack in my view, maybe something like a ring-slider that you didn't have to look for but just move your thumb or finger back to *_hit-it-every-time_* would be a solution? Either way, I wish someone would put this issue to bed once and for all.

    I've read that Ratta did HoM2 pen using LAMY tech for the fill actually and it can be interchangeable with LAMY emr. So if you want a erasure button one may combine the two although it will change the shape of a fill and cover may not fit (probably will not).

    Hi Voja. Beautiful channel. Since I have been following you I have a strong desire for an e-ink device, I bought your daily diary on your site, but for my use cases, at the moment, the e-ink tablets are not suitable. I wanted to ask you for advice. I have a Tab S6 lite 2022 with Paperfeel Doodroo screen protector. Can I use such a kind of pen onto my screen (with protector applied)? Thank you in advance

    During your test, have you noticed any clicking sounds caused by loose/too loose nib? Some users claimed it to be the case with HoM1...
    And did you feel any difference in how tight the nib is placed between HoM1 and HoM 2?
    Thanks for the review!

      I just got a Supernote and I love it. It comes with the basic pen, but that sound you're mentioning is really annoying. I can't really find any video or website mentioning this anywhere. Is my pen defective? Is this something only I care about? I'm confused.

  • @sarahbenjamins
    @sarahbenjamins 6 месяцев назад

    Does the pen make a tapping noise where it taps the screen? If so do only ceramic nibs do that, or do the other types of EMR nib (plastic, felt, others?) do that too? I really think that would bother me..

      Supernote is more of a pen and paper feel while Remakable is attempting a pencil and paper feel.

    So much of this comes down to personal preference and even writing style. I'm glad I went with the standard pen. I love it and plan to order two more unless they release a new pen with a soft grip. The short stubby HOM just isn't for me. My grip would place my fingers on the sharp transition which I think would result in a very uncomfortable feel.

    the HOM2 pen seems to have a spring action where you feel it give when you are writing notes. I don't particularly like that and wonder if there are pens for Supernote that do not have that spring action. thanks!!!

    • @wyattutz
      @wyattutz 10 месяцев назад +1

      The spring action is actually related to the pressure sensitivity, I think you could perhaps replace the spring but then you'll only get really light lines unless you press hard; I'd also expect that the screen protector could be damaged by the pen with a stiffer spring.

      Well classical guitar has nylon strings, electric guitar and bass have steel strings, which builds much thicker calluses, so that might be the difference.

    When I pull the cap off of mine - the nib isn't shown - the pen bulls apart in a funny way. I have to slide it back in and turn it and try to pull it apart differently until the nib is shown. I wish I had a pic .... hard to describe. Anyone else have this issue? I can't figure out why it's doing it and how to fix it other than put the cap on and pull it off until the pen pieces stay in place.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  8 месяцев назад

      It sounds like you got a defective cap and that the inner part of the cap stays on the pen, when you pull the cap off. I would contact Supernote about that, as that is not how it is supposed to work.

    Do any of the pens have bigger than 0.7mm nib? I have been writing on paper with a 1mm ballpoint nib for years and much prefer that 'feel' - I don't know whether because of how it looks, or the actual amount of contact with the page.

    How does it attach/combine with the device and/or folio?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Год назад +1

      Same as the previous one, via the folio's pen holder, you slide the pen through it and the cap clip holds onto the pen loop holder.

  • @Carbon915

    The original HoM pen has an excellent barrel shape. Really nice to hold. The addition of the ‘bumper’ on the new pen (what I call the widening of the barrel, closer to the nib) is not good for everyone. When I use small handwriting, or write quickly, I need to hold the pen lower down (closer to the nib), to help achieve more control of the writing strokes. The bumper gets in the way of this. (as is the case with the Lamy pen). The original HoM pen had a nicer, unobstructed hold.
    They could have made a modular pen, that allowed the use of a traditional wacom nib (e.g., like the Lamy or Wacom One pen nibs). The ceramic nib feels very slippery; it is difficult to control the movement of the own while writing, causing ‘overshooting’ of strokes and or messy writing.
    If Ratta sold a nib mechanism that held a traditional wacom nib, or if the sold separately a replacement lower part of the barrel which could accommodate a traditional wacom nib, I would certainly buy one.
