October 1 about 13 years ago I was attacked by a black bear while in a small boat with an old electric motor in a slow moving river. My girl friend and I were laying back in bean bag chairs enjoying the evening right at dark when we heard something splashing it's way out of the water. I thought it may be a local elk herd but no horns or hooves were hitting logs . So We kept going down river. I had to stop and lift the motor to get the motor over a log in the river. The animal stayed about 50 to 150 yards away from us for about a mile down river. It had alot of stamina going threw thick brush. It didn't like it when I would get ahead of it. We were coming to a field where we would have been able to see it. But just before we got to the opening it it was about 150 yards away and I was guessing we had about an 8 second lead on it it started charging . I took an inventory of my weapons. 2 aluminum oars, 2 little fly fishing poles and a little swiss army knife. Not good. About 100 yards out it turned on a burst of speed and closed my 8 second lead. As it broke out of the brush in front of us I yeld at it like you would cattle to turn them around but that didn't work. It hit the water wide open. I couldn't out run it so I spun the boat around expecting claws on the side of the boat but we made it out of there without that happening. I asked my girl friend what she was doing. She said Praying. I was going to jump on the bears back in the water but that wouldn't have been a good day for me. The depth of the water and the lord saved us. The following evening I took my big guns and went back to see if it would try that again but nothing happened. I now fish with a 12 gauge riot shot gun with slugs and a flashlight.
Problem is with a grizzly, you better shoot the first shot in the air and try to scare it off and stop its charge, unless you know you can unload your entire clip into that bear. Because even with a 44 mag., if you don’t hit that bear in the right spot, it still has the ability to kill you. If you shoot a grizzly and you haven’t killed it, & it knows where you’re at, it’s coming to kill you!
I've watched all your videos that you've made regarding your bear attack ordeal Tim. Everytime you retell your horrifying story I hear your fear in your voice. I can't imagine what you went through, but you have a way of telling your story that puts the listeners right there with you! I am amazed how cool you remained during your attack, I'm sure it's what saved you!. I love the outdoors too, I do a lot of hiking up in the North Cascades which is bear country also. Close to Canada. I also carry bear spray, and .44 rugar big bear gun. :) I pray I never have to use either one!
That’s crazy! Thank god he survived, he was left with an insane story, you can here the adrenaline in his voice coming back as he describes the attack in the very same place it happened!
Wow....I would freak out. They are so awesome, but not when you are in their mouth. Thank GOD you survived!. Playing dead would probably be the hardest thing ever when you are being attacked by a bear. Thanks for the video.
You have an awesome testimony an I'm sure even though you were caught off guard not only did God have you your will to live is more than likely what saved you! Some people give up then again the injuries can be so severe God brings them home. I am glad that you made it through!
Bear spray is a good deterrent except when the bear have their ears back and in a full charge they'll blow right thru it. It may lessen their attack but your getting mauled and or killed. Have a large bore gun, hard cast bullets and practice practice practice.
Tim Douglass - I read the same advice on another video. Bear spray is good to use when the bear isn't a threat but maybe too close. Spray will send it away. If the bear is charging and about to attack a gun is needed. It's advice that makes the most sense.
Not unusual for the bear to come back after the first attack. It is like they pretend to leave just to see if they did the job. So...should it ever happen, do not move! Wait! It could safe your life. What other choice do we have if we don't carry a heavy gun ready to use...always from a kneeling position! Never shoot down on a running bear! You overshoot every time! Kneel and shoot straight at him, or her... coming at you and empty the gun! I know...not the same as living it!
The first time she left I'm sure she went to tell her cubs come look I have dinner. So glad to hear the bear wasn't killed. I hate to hear of orphaned cubs.
Is bear spray still number one for you? I suspect your 44 mag is your number one now or maybe a 12 guage or 45-70. Most grizzly charges are bluff charges. Bear spray appears to work in these cases because the bear never intended to make contact. When an 800 pound apex predator is determined to maul you to death or near death, no cloud of irritant is going to phase it. In those cases only lethal force sufficient for taking dangerous game can save you. And then only if you can hit the brain or spine before it plows into you at 45mph slamming you to the ground and most likely dislodging your firearm from your hands. At that point is is best to have a small handgun snapped in a chest holster to administer a point plank brain shot. The SP101 in 357 magnum is ideal for this task.
If u have spray it might not work , if u have handgun you might miss .. The single best thing is shotgun with slugs and buck shot .. Unload it and pray .. Should do the job, no animal or human on earth can handle the energy of close range of a shotgun !!
Cory Burns They make ammunition for large bear for shotguns with high FPS I’m talking the numbers of energy is impossible to live maybe u should look it up
findcrap Are you stupid or something? Did you even understand a word he said. Have you ever used a 12 gauge? Findcrap seems like an appropriate name since you’re a piece of shit.
I hiked that trail this summer, while hiking to the top of Sphinx mountain. Had a great day, was unarmed and no bear spray, just me and my three dogs,, all large breads.. While I didn't see a bear I ran into a group of guys at Helmet pass who'd seen a bear skirting Helmet mountain earlier in the day, but were far enough away that they couldn't tell if it was a black or grizzly. I don't worry about it, because like Todd I've spent my whole life in the mountains and statistically the odds are really low to be attacked. I do use bear protocol tho, like making plenty of noise in brushy areas and rely on my mutts as a distracting part of my bear strategy. I take them everywhere and they are great mountain dogs. Great video and I'm glad you are doing great. Keep a trukin!

Thank god there are places like Montana where you can visit and see this type of stuff. DONT MOVE THERE AND FUCK IT UP, THINGS ARE PERFECT THE WAY THEY ARE. California for example.

Hey Todd Orr wasn't in Glacier u r going to tell a story get ur facts right good God man he was in Bear canyon outside of Bozeman Mt no where near glacier park wow
You had a gun the whole time NUMB nuts! What do you mean there was nothing else you could do to survive??? If you would’ve Stood your ground, never turn your back on her & shot in the air as you yelled at her, you would’ve had a better chance of not getting attacked. I was also born and raised in Montana and I’ve been falling timber over 30 years & hunting bears & I have been in grizzly country my entire life & If you ever run across a sow grizzly with Cubs and you know it is a grizzly & she suddenly runs off away from you, Remember, 100% of the time, she is coming back to make sure the threat of you is gone! She Only took her cubs to a place she felt was safe and Told them to stay there and she’s coming back for you! When you turn your back on her and try to leave, you’ve given her the upper hand and she knows it

Fast As Ali I’d rather have a 12 gauge with slugs
Headshots only eyes would be a good one make that bear blind

Dos Equis needs to hire this man.

Very Scary ... Thank God your alive ....
What about your gun. What was the reason not to use it
I just keep thinking how did he not bring any gun with him that day? Never be me.
I live in Montana and my bday is oct. 1st. Weird
Your damn lucky to live ,glad you made it through.
Yeah Montana! Let's grab my binoculars and go...
a 80 lb pitbull threatened me the other day...close but didnt bite me... it was pretty scary. A 500 grizzly must be.... well.... good luck.
Why is "bear spray... [your] ... number one"??? Sounds kind of absolute.
Bear spray in one hand, gun in the other
I don’t mind admitting bears and what they’re capable of scare the shit out of me
Yikes...why didnt the spray work !?!?!?!
