    ÖBB has one of the cleanest trains in Europe. RENFE in Spain is also very good. The no window first class seat was designed in purpose. The ÖBB frequent business travelers who book first class wanted a secluded seat with no distraction. Therefore these seats exist and the website states it. Believe me; on the early morning runs out of Vienna and Innsbruck and vv. these seats are all taken. Westbahn is also quite good.

      It's a nice station for sure, but it's not without its flaws. For example, the access to the subway station (U1) is a fairly long walk from the platforms. Unnecessarily long, if you ask me, which could have been avoided with better planning. I'm saying this because a lot of commuters have to switch from regional trains to the subway there.

      @stephanweinberger 4 года назад +3

      @@FrostyAUT Compared to other international stations the walk to the subway is still comparatively short. And there wasn't really a way to get much closer to it without completely rebuilding the subway station.
      What Wien Hauptbahnhof lacks most IMHO is a dedicated area for local traffic. The two platforms of the "Stammstrecke" (the main urban line that crosses the city) Nr. 1&2 are separate from the other platforms 3-12, which sometimes causes confusion because you now have regional trains in the same direction leaving at different places. Again, platforms 1&2 are just previously existing platforms from the old Südbahnhof station... The original plan was to build a completely new set of 4-6 underground platforms for local traffic, and another 6-8 above ground dedicated to intercity and international trains, which would actually have reduced the footprint of the station (or left place for future expansion), at basically no additional cost (the foundations had to be buildt anyways). Unfortunately this plan was ditched in favor of a parking garage (which I would have located in the old Stammstrecke-tunnel after the new station was finished).

It's an almost 8-hours-journey and for that duration the seats are in my opinion a little bit too hard. But nevertheless I like to travel in this train. A very good and comprehensive report. The train from the outside looks good and the interior well designed But that seat is woeful for business/first class or however they want to market it. No window and very limited seat pitch does not augur well for a good train journey. The compartments which remind me of ICE carriages are much more comfortable. One thing which you said hits home about present train travel ie re the bins located for easier cleaning, not situated so passengers could have them closer.
    My favourite train journey though a while ago was on the Rhinegold from Amsterdam to Munich. Very large comfortable seats which you could swivel round, good recline and seat pitch and looking through gold tinted windows just gave it an extra edge of lavishness. A trip I remember with great fondness

The first railjets were delivered without bicycle space and the restaurant only had stand-up tables (the idea was to deliver most meals directly to the seats, at least in first class). That didn't work well so all the restaurants were rebuilt (and later railjets built that way) and the coach adjacent to the locomotive was rebuilt with six or seven bike spaces. I've got to say, Thibault, imo this is the best tripreport you've ever done! I love the Railjet, it's my favourite train - I tried it in 2nd class from Vienna Airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof and back, it certainly is the best intercity train! I was looking for a good tripreport on the Railjet and I'm pleased I've found the perfect one! Wien HBF is also great, my favourite station!

    Agree, the Railjet is a good package. Prefer loco haulage. They are having problems with the Taurus locos, though, in respect to abnormal track wear caused by the extra weight of the loco. When I travelled last June ticket checks did not occur very often, in fact coming back from Wien to Zurich there was no check at all! Food was good. You really had to remind catering staff to take your money!

    Wow, now I feel old. The last time I was in Vienna, back in 2013, this was still called "Wien Sudbahnhof" and it was still very much under construction. At the time, the Westbahnhof was the main terminus for trains going west into Germany.
    From what I gather now, Sudbahnhof has been promoted to Vienna's main central railway station, with a name change to match, while the Westbahnhof has been relegated to secondary commuter status.

      The new main station was built in place of the two former Südbahnhof and Ostbahnhof stations (south and east termini), to accomodate through trains. In the process they also built a new tunnel connecting the western railway line to the main station, so most intercity and international trains from the west now also go there (and continue on to the airport or towards Slovakia, the Czech republic, or Hungary).
      The old Westbahnhof now mainly serves local and regional trains, with the exception of the Westbahn trains to Salzburg (the company, not the line - dont be confused *g*), but these services have been greatly expanded (which was quite necessary and couldn't be done as long as they had to share the tracks with long-distance trains).

      2 Diesel locomotives with 4.000 hp each seems like such a waste for a 4 coach train. Here in Austria, the grandfather of the Charger (the Siemens "Hercules") has about half the horsepower and often pulls 5 coach regional trains at up to 140 km/h (though they are only used for that purpose if some part of the track is not electrified).

    I've only been on railjet once back in 2009 and I remember at the time lots of people claimed ÖBB would fail with it, comparing railjet to the somewhat ill-fated Metropolitan Express Train DB once operated between Hamburg and Cologne (a train that's still operating under ICE branding and should be on everybody's bucket-list btw). I for one am happy to see them succeed with it. I certainly had a pleasant journey on it back then and understand they've only improved things since. However, I do remember that the train didn't quite have the premium feel they advertised. Especially compared to the ICE-T I took on my return-trip from Vienna just a few days later. And that was what they wanted to surpass. It's a great intercity-service though and I'm very excited for the second generation that's about to follow soon.
