Very good info for new and returning students. I never heard anyone suggest silk as a swabbing material but it makes sense... Thanks for the info.
Yes, silk is actually a great material for swabs and it’s not difficult to find. I’ve recommended it to my students for 20+ years. I really dislike the swabs that come with the stock instrument care kits. I find that kids tend to shove swabs into their cases and the silk won’t crush or damage their flute, even when compressed.
This helped alot! But i was wondering, could i use a random cloth?
Very important info!
I’m a student borrowing a flute and the swab it came with is always getting stuck in there. After watching this video I think i want to get a silk swab now. Thank you for showing me this.
I'm so glad to help! I really think you can't go wrong with a silk swab. It never gets stuck.
I have you as my band teacher
Well, hello there! 👋😄
👋
Thats crazy! Now i wonder if my band teacher is here lolZ
Hello! Thank you for the video! At the crown of the flute (the top part), it cant clean all the way to the end even if I really try. Do you have any tips to help whit that? Thank you again!
I usually just pull the cleaning cloth up over the top of the cleaning rod, like a hood before cleaning the head joint. It's not perfect and you can't really reach all of the corners, but it picks up most of the moisture. Thank you for watching! Best wishes!
I have a flute i use to play in high school and its super browned and tarnished. Is it to late to return it to its regular silver state? It has some pretty big brown spots
I would first try carefully polishing it with a silver polishing cloth (available online or at music stores). If you want a more thorough cleaning, you can take it to a repair shop where they can remove the keys and clean it in the areas you can’t normally reach.
I tell my kids that they can clip a bag with a caribiner clip on the handle of their flute case, so they can store their cleaning supplies.
Great idea!
Do you clean the sockets and tenons with the polishing cloth as well?
Good question! Yes, I clean those areas with the polishing cloth. It keeps them from getting stuck. 👍
How do you remove tarnish from a flute?
I would avoid using any silver cleaners on a flute. Try to remove as much as possible with a silver polishing cloth. These are available from music retailers or online. If there are areas between the mechanisms that you cannot reach, consult with an instrument repair technician.
So the crown isn't supposed to come out? I thought that it needed to in order to clean through the head joint. I've never had a problem with the pitch of the flute changing before.
It is not normally removed, except for maintenance. The cork should remain in place and she not move around easily. It’s important to check the position of the cork occasionally to make sure it’s in the right spot. Mine never moves because I don’t mess with it, but often younger players will play with the screw and move it around.
@@TheMagicInTheMusic thanks for the reply! It's interesting because when cleaning, my flute instructor since I was 10 (I am 45 now, just recently picked it back up) would always remove it when cleaning so as to show me how to go through the entire head joint to remove all the excess moisture back there. All the flutes I had in the past you could remove it very easily and it wouldn't change the pitch. My girlfriend just gifted me a brand new flute which is $1000 plus and I was curious as to why the crown wasn't coming out. It isn't budging and I didn't want to force it so I thought I would look around for answers. Thank you again for replying!! - Joel
