I recently bought a flute that had been found in an attic. Beautiful flute, plays good, all the keys work, but it has that old attic smell. Can you get rid of the smell without repadding the whole flute? It is about 50 years old. (Came with the old brown case, in pretty good shape too) It is a Gemeinhardt. I have one flute in the shop right now getting a tuneup, and know they don't like repadding flutes.
how do you clean the cloth shammy that comes with the flute - soap and water - it picks up the smell in the flute, I don't want to continue using to clean.
I would never ever keep the cleaning cloth inside the flute case. 1) you risk damaging the flute with the extra material, and 2) a wet cloth inside a closed case means the moisture will sit there, inside the case and never evaporate off. I would also clean the head-joint last, since its the most wet.
Should i trust you? I know how to take care of my flute..... Okay, i may have broken my cleaning rod and my other thingy, but i learned this by my mother why am i watching this

PJ Sev I'd like to know too.
-after 50 years the flute deserves an overhaul and tune up.
Im pretty sure you should just clean it, maybe wipe the case off a bit and clean the flute daily after you use it
If they don't like repadding Flutes , don't take any Flute there.
