The QUEEN of ALL FETAS is DODONI (It used to be a state company) and as alternative EPIRUS (When Dodoni was privatised, the staff left and created EPIRUS Feta). MEVGAL and PINDUS are also good quality fetas ... remember the regions of Greece which are the Masters of FETA in the country are Epirus, Western Macedonia and Thessaly ... these are the regions where you will find most Vlachs (Aromanians/Arumuni), who are experts in cheese making such as Feta, Kaskavali and Kefalotyri (the last one is excellent for spaghetti)
Which one is better is a mater of personal preference. Kalavriton or Rodopi is also good. However, you should try to avoid prepackaged products as they are more expensive and lacking in taste imho. Your best option is to go for the cheesees sold by the kilo. If you ask the staff they will be more than happy to give you a taste so you can find which feta or white cheese suits your palette best. And then buy how much you like. For example, I usually indicate how much I want by using the width of my fingers ( a finger is almost 100grams). One other thing. You will find a wider variety of asian products in the Χαλκιαδάκης ( Chalkiadakis) supermarket, or order online from a well known shop in Athens. It should be easy to find by Google.
In Greece you can find FRESH products everywhere. In the northern Europe, most products are more expensive, but even if some are cheaper, people forget that quality matters.
02:44 this red headless fish is very good for soups but not for grills , it has a lot of small bones. I suggest "tsipoura" or "lavraki" or "fagri" for grilling. "Tsipoura" the fish not to be mistaken with "tsipouro" the drink
Thank you for advice 🙏😊💙💙 But why this famous fish now 😂😂😂 is only for soup? Because of small bones, or the taste or what about it makes it good only for soup?
@@Sunpire the other fish are bigger and have more fat and that's why they are better for the grill. Smaller fish are better fried or in the oven with some olive oil and herbs. You will find 100 recipes for soup with "kokkinopsaro" (κοκκινοψαρο in greek) translates to "red fish". In my experience It gives a richer flavor in soups and it is easier to take out the bones after boiling it. Also for yogurt give a try to the ones in the clay pots .
For Feta you can also try the one from Kefalonia, it's a one of a kind feta that has a softer "creamy" state. This is not always the case though so better ask before - Sklavenitis usually has it on the cheese section that has a person and not from the fridges that have the ones that you were looking. Also you can check Dodoni and Ipeiros for Fetas. One tip, you can put in aluminum foil feta with olive oil and oregano and put it in the oven or in the bbq grill and it will melt and be so good!
Hello! Some information for you, hoping to solve some of your questions. The reason you do not see so many ready made meals in greek supermarkets (pizzas, etc), is because in Greece people cook and not eat ready made meals in daily basis. Also keep in mind pizza in Greece is fantastic and you can order it from hundreds of different places. Also the best feta is usuallly the one you get from the barel that is sold straight from the cheese stand. I would suggest try different types until you find what you enjoy the most. Greece is also known for the fantastic cheeses, so i would suggest abandon cheddar (which is great in UK), and start trying different ones. By the way, where were you living in the UK before you moved in Greece??
Hi! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to give us useful information 🙏💙 That's what we thought, it's the same in Romania, as a culture people don't consume that much ready meals. So far, we really enjoyed the cheese here! It's fantastic! There are so many types, all different and really tasty. We used to live in Milton Keynes, it's somewhere in London's surroundings.
I recently came back from Vasiliki in Lefkada. There are around 5 or 6 supermarkets there. They are all fairly small, family run type supermarkets. There are no big chain supermarkets. I found the prices to be very high (compared to the UK). e.g. a tin of sardines was between 1.30-1.80 euros. The same or more for a tin of tuna. Bananas worked out about 0.60 euro each. I litre of milk was 1.70 - 2.00 euros. 6 eggs were around 2.2 euros and small beers were 1.20 or more. 200ml of sun tan lotion was 20 euros. I think this is because, 1) They are all small supermarkets with small purchasing power and 2) Because Vasiliki is a tourist destination and probably very quiet outside of the season so they make most of their income from May-September. I should have asked where local Greek people do their shopping. They probably go to a bigger town? I did not go to a bigger supermarket in another part of Greece so I cannot compare the prices. Vasiliki and Lefkada island are very beautiful so I would like to visit there again, just expect 'tourist' prices if you go to Vasiliki.

There are abt 10 options for white cheese, 20 for soft/melted cheese and a few hundred for special ones (like spicy versions of kephalotyri). Pls keep in mind that every area produces a somewhat different cheese, so one may find maybe 50 labels of graviera, each one with its unique taste (the "type" is the same, as defined by the main ingredients and methods, but in each area, the animals for example, have different digestion so the final product is also different).

😊 hallo miteinander.
i dont know where this supermarket is but the same supermarket company here have "twice" the price. Some products you look werent the companies people usually buy. Generally you can unfortunatly see prices in many products that in countries like germany or switzerland are 2 times cheaper and are either or not produced in Hellas. Average salary is 800-1000 euros and basic a bit less than 800.

@@Sunpirea "bit"? I suppose you're joking! because the lives of most Greeks since 2009 have become hell. everything is becoming more expensive, but unemployment and the reduction of wages and pensions is outrageous. average pensions are €350 to €500, while salaries are €600 to €700! that's why all the young people are leaving the country!!! Greece is now only for the rich and tourists, because the Greeks can't even make it to the end of the month with their salaries!!!
I'm not gonna say if it's expensive or not. Just consider this: 708 Euros net monthly income, at least 400 Euros for rent, even for old houses and apartments, plus water bill, power bill, internet bill, food for the month, super high taxes and if you got a car/bike, consider those expenses as well. Sounds like a battle for survival, doesn't it? Also, when the whole world reduces work days to four per week, our politicians want to increase them to six, or even seven. Starting to sound like the worst place to live, huh? That's because it is.

don't think of the prices of products independently from the salaries. The average salary in Greece is usually less than 1000 Euros and just renting is over 500. Electricity from 150-250 euros monthly and many more expenses.Do your calculations and understand why Greece is a poor country. What saves the Greeks is that most of them have property of their own from their parents.

@@Gargamelito78🙃 that might be good !
😊 hallo miteinander.

The supermarkets are price gouging their customers, Greece is expensive.
Yes, it is... Why do you think is that?
For us Greeks its expensive yes.
i dont know where this supermarket is but the same supermarket company here have "twice" the price. Some products you look werent the companies people usually buy. Generally you can unfortunatly see prices in many products that in countries like germany or switzerland are 2 times cheaper and are either or not produced in Hellas. Average salary is 800-1000 euros and basic a bit less than 800.
Thank you for watching! This supermarket is in Crete, Greece🇬🇷

short answer? : Yes. (Greek here)
Best feta is "KARALIS"
Thank you very much for watching us and for advice 💙💙🙏🤗
While all europe got less prices for everything even if the product is greek or not.. paradox
Parnassus feta is the best
How are these prices for you?
If u buy feta from the staff inside the supermarket its almost half price compared to prepackaged in the fridges.I usually buy whichever is in discount as they are all good but the best are Kalavriton and Hpeiros

Greece is very very very expensive for the Greeks and there salaries, unfortunately its no more fun leaving in Greece.
It is a bit expensive...
Yes,you are right, it really is very expensive .
feta of kalavrita

Very very expensive
It is a bit expensive...
Yes okay you don't bbq this
🤣🤣🤣🤣 we didn't know that 😂😂😂
@@Sunpire That's okay. Just don't eat the turtles
Are they only for soup and not for bbq???? 🐢 🐢 🐢
@@Sunpire The turtles no, they aren't. The fish, yes. It makes a very nice soup.
I saw you can also cook it in the oven?
I'm not gonna say if it's expensive or not. Just consider this: 708 Euros net monthly income, at least 400 Euros for rent, even for old houses and apartments, plus water bill, power bill, internet bill, food for the month, super high taxes and if you got a car/bike, consider those expenses as well. Sounds like a battle for survival, doesn't it? Also, when the whole world reduces work days to four per week, our politicians want to increase them to six, or even seven. Starting to sound like the worst place to live, huh? That's because it is.

Guy's Greece is expensive but less wages 😢
Thank you very much for watching us 💙💙🙏🤗.
don't think of the prices of products independently from the salaries. The average salary in Greece is usually less than 1000 Euros and just renting is over 500. Electricity from 150-250 euros monthly and many more expenses.Do your calculations and understand why Greece is a poor country. What saves the Greeks is that most of them have property of their own from their parents.
We understand this situation. We are originally from Romania, where things are even worse. The minimum wage is 400€ per month, and everything is very expensive. This is happening in many countries.
If you want to see if they're actually expensive, you have to get a minimum wage job. Or just an average job in Greece.
Let me save you 15 minutes. Yes
