The Gray Hoverman certainly is a great antenna. That's an excellent build you did. I made two of them and they both out performed my commercial channel master antenna. Thinking about doing another one.
Same here I got 2 pointing at different directions, hmm about 40 degrees apart. Would like to build one for Southern reception and combine all the signal and boost them via commercial CM. .
Yes, approximately. It is the control rod from "Levelor Blinds", and not perfectly round. It has 2 grooves that run the length of the rod, but I doubt that makes a difference. I just worked with what I had.
@@GBear This is something I want to run buy you. Would making the plastic coated steel out of brass, bronze or copper somehow make a difference on performance ??? Reason I am asking is that sometimes the dumbest things make great things happen. I will start getting materials for the build. Thanks again fella. Peace too vf
@@victoryfirst2878 The deflector shield is to prevent signals from entering from the rear, in essence to make it a directional antenna. It acts like the dish part of satellite antenna. You want it to deflect signals, not attract them. The Gray Hoverman is a directional antenna and was designed to precisely hone in on a single transmitter antenna.
This antenna looks great! Thank you for taking the time explaning how you built it and with some of the measurements. I do have one question the plastic pieces screwed to the center post, what are the spacing's for them centre to centre. Thank you very much for your help. Regards
Thanks, and welcome aboard. I thought I gave all those measurements in the video. I'll have to wait until the next time I'm on the roof to take measurements because I have forgotten.
Nice video. We want to try this and most of the stuff. We have some square galvanized laying around.Would it work or does it have to be aluminum like yours. Thanks
I see no reason you couldn't use the square galvanized tube. It will be a bit heavier than the aluminum tube. All the antennas I have seen on houses and in stores are aluminum, probably for the cost and the weight. One guy commented that he used wood and coat hangers when he was a kid.
I have built these Grey Hoverman style antennas before and found that the reflector screen as they are called usually makes no difference in reception.
It's only supposed to block interference from channels from behind from what I know. You are right, unlike a satellite dish that uses the dish as a reflector towards the receiving unit, the wire screen doesn't do that. The satellite dish works like a parabolic mirror to gather incoming rays and combine/direct them to a single point.
hogcat space between elements and reflector is two and a half inches and space between element bends at the plastic blocks is 2 inches. The center screw holds the plastic to the frame and the screws holding the elements are 1 inch to each side of that.
Thanks a bunch!! I just found your channel today and am going to build one in the next week or so after I get some supplys. Been watching that guy in Georgia videos also. So between the two of ya I should/hope I build a good one.
Trebla Setroc in the beginning of this video, the black 2 pc tool to the right of the speed square fits in a vise and the rod is placed in between the chisel side and the V side and the vise is tightened.
Hey G Bear, I enjoyed your videos. I noticed you said you live in San Diego... we live in North County (cut off by hills), and people say it cant be done, but still managed to pick up an avg. of 34 Channels. I was wondering how far out you go in the desert and how many Ch's you pick up ?
Dan Geraghty I go to the upper desert near rte 58 and in one direction I pick up 21 channels, in another I pick up 3 more, and yet another direction I get 3 others. When I have more time away from homesteading I will try combining antennas facing in different directions.
G Bear, I will check out those locations on a map. My wife and I are new to the west coast... we're from the other coast (N.Y.), so for me it's a lot of trial and error, but I enjoy every minute of it. You're a kindred spirit, love salvaging old stuff and putting it to good use. By the way I re-scaned my set a few minutes ago and came up with more channels, probably due to the marine layer. Thanks for your informative videos, when they say it can't be done, I try to do it.
G Bear, what a great guy super great attitude very clearly letting us know that you are not the sole thinker in designing this antenna but so willing to tell us all the great ideas and giving us great detail on how to build what is truly yours and letting us know what works for you and what you don't recommend. Thank You for taking the time to plainly let us know how to build such a great antenna you are a special man. I would like to ask you what antenna out of the ones that you have built that you feel is the most powerful, one is only a few less channels than the other but in your mind which one would you say is absolutely the best? Thanks Again!
I know you told us that your bender is not something that we can find but would you be able to give me the exact name of the bender, so I can do some research and just maybe I will be able in finding it at some antique shop or maybe even a garage sale. Thank You a whole bunch maybe you could have someone copy the one you have and I would be able to buy it from you. I truly like to make things and like to give them away to my family and friend because it make my heart feel that I did something nice for someone. I am 69 and am retired from the USPS. and would like to try to make these antenna so my family and friends don't have to pay the high cost of Cable.
Check my playlist. I show both builds doing a channel search and the number of channels found, as well as the clarity of reception. I also show them installed on my off grid cabin in the high desert, picking up San Diego channels. Thanks for watching.
This is a common question. I'm sure copper will work just fine. I used aluminum because a:) I had it, b:) It is light weight, and c:) Copper would have been more expensive.

Looks good ? Can you do a video on how many channels it gets please?
I did that already if you are talking about my TV antennas. I also did one with it installed at my cabin in the high desert.

They are the mechanical control rods from vertical blinds.

Whats the lenth on the top hat 14"?
Welcome aboard! I'll get back to you on that, as I made that antenna over 8 years ago, so I'll have to measure it tomorrow.
I noticed the Narods on the bottom and top! I use the Hat type. I call them Hat and Pants for Grey Hoverman :)
Can you please get the whole thing into a single frame for once ? Thank you. Great invasion!!
Akila Rathmalavinna sorry, that ship has sailed so to speak. That antenna #1 is installed at my off grid cabin for a year...

hogcat no, upper desert. Near Edwards.

How did you bend the rods for your hoverman antennas?
Trebla Setroc in the beginning of this video, the black 2 pc tool to the right of the speed square fits in a vise and the rod is placed in between the chisel side and the V side and the vise is tightened.
where did you get those grills?
They are remnants from a roll of plastic coated fence wire from Home Depot.
