He is some Lovecraftian nightmare, a creature known and prized--or perhaps feared--big enough to have a 'great' fall and durable enough to (while falling apart) be put back together. And it takes a LOT of people to do it. Humpty Dumpty is nothing like an egg, or egg shaped, but is in fact some horrid hellish thing, a cruel yet undoubtedly sentient beast that lies broken and furious likely to this day.
Humpty Dumpty was likely a cannon that sat atop colchester castle in England. It fell down the wall and was too large to retrieve so it was left where it was.
