The day I stopped drinking I decided to focus on health then everything changed in my life, both financially and spiritually. I socialize with friends and have no desire to drink. It’s empowering to know that I have taken control of my life again.
I'm an older guy, turning 58 in a few days. When I was younger myself and most of my friends drank...sometimes a LOT. We always had 1 person picked to be the designated driver, so they would drink nothing. This also let them keep an eye on the group, to help protect them. So they would basically become the hero of the night. So not unusual at all to have someone not drinking. About a year ago, my best friend decided to stop drinking. Now mind you, one of the consistent things we've done for the past 30 years is drink. I've totally supported him and have not drank in front of him. I told him we don't have to drink to have fun. (I'm a naturally fun guy anyway lol) The older I get, the less I care about drinking anyway. Been there done that. Pretty sure I haven't had 1 drink myself in at least 6 months, maybe in a year. In fact, just today my brothers and I went to my friend's for a cookout. The day before we were talking about what we were going to bring, and he said if we wanted to bring some beer we could, but he wasn't drinking. We didn't even say anything, but we didn't take any beer. If he's not drinking we're not drinking. No big deal. When I started carnivore a couple weeks ago, I stopped drinking diet pop and only drink water. I did drink a couple Diet Mountain Dews today as a treat. Back on the water now. And the food was easy, I had delicious burgers and hot dogs. Sorry didn't intend to write a book lol
i love the context, thanks for sharing all of it. thanks for sharing all of this. sometimes friendships don't withstand the "not drinking" test anymore because that's what they did together. it's kinda like when you're friends with people at work, but outside of work it feels more awkward? its the frame in which reality exists for those relationships. I had a couple of those for drinking and smoking week that i noticed when i stopped, but mostly they turned out ok. thanks for being here :)
I love your messaging. Stopping drinking is not the end of the world. I stopped a year and a half ago. I've never been happier. My friends found it a bit weird right in the beginning but once they saw we could still have a good time that went away.
literally lol i remember the first concert i went to sober, it was so much longer and more fulfilling than the others I'd been to in the past. lol who knew! 😂
The fun thing is when you don't drink, and go out with friends who drink... you feel proxy drunk because of everyone else's energy. Plus it's more fun to see everyone acting so goofy. Also waking up with 0 hangover is ALWAYS worth it. Had one drink the past 8 or 9 years. Don't miss it at all.
soo true. sometimes my friends who don't know i don't drink (so like distant friends) are astounded i don't drink because they say im such good energy. they think im drinking with them lol
You get to know who your friends are when you stop drinking. Most they want addiction body. Friend is someone you are willing to risk your life for to defend them. Not a weekend drunk.
I really appreciate how you said it’s not us, it’s the substance, and I do feel that way too, speaking of alcoholism. I know this doesn’t relate to the current video. I am doing just slightly better with my addiction, going to keep it going, it’s a tough thing.
Friends celebrate you doing what is right for you and the successes in your life. That said people CAN get weird when you NEVER drink with them. They are now "drinking alone", which can come with a lot of self doubts, maybe even facing their own demons, and few want to do that. Others can misread your lack of desire to drink with them as a signal of judgment on your part. Relationships have two sides and both must be in agreement and have some area of level ground where they meet. Bottom line, you gotta do what's right for you and not make personal life decisions based on what someone else does or thinks of it. My life's biggest lesson so far... don't over or underestimate the value of anyone in your life, whether they are there for a day or for a lifetime
When I went dancing in the past, I didn't drink. I usually was the driver and didn't need a drink to have a good time. Normally, I would drink at girl's night out dinners. Now, I don't even do that. I find I am pretty much the same with or without drinks. It is always interesting being the only sober one.

If my friends drink and want to go eat at a restaurant that I can’t eat at it’s no big deal. I’m there to enjoy their company and I can do that without alcohol or carby foods.
I agree that fear over friendships shouldn't be part of the equation. As adults, we have to make decisions in the interests of our health and future. But it's not necessarily as simple as ' don't worry about it' for many people. The current and historical context of the relationship is vital, as are the personalities involved. Old friends who periodically get together is one thing. But if clubbing is their life and not yours and you're always expected to join them in their thing, that gets old fast. Hanging out with an old friend from a former life is fun, but sooner or later, there's nothing new to base that friendship on anymore.
I have never been a drinker. I made the experience, that I always have to explain myself for not wanting to drink. But I‘m used to that, and I don‘t see it as a problem… and anyways, I don‘t care what others think about it. Well, I don‘t judge others for drinking either…
I recently had my first girls happy hour with a friend who didn’t know I wasn’t going to drink. When I ordered my Perrier she asked me if I was pregnant 😂 Anyway, being sober is great. ❤
I turn 40 next month n I will be going to Aruba with my sister for our bday. Ivs been sobee for 14 mths. So this was definantely a great motivation video for me. Ty soooo much for sharing!!
I don't drink, and I went out with a friend to a music night at a local spiritous establishment. She and the rest of the table had alcoholic drinks and I had Diet Coke. Every time they wanted a refill, someone would pay for the table to get refilled. I can tell you that they slept waaayyy better than I did that night. 😳
@@laurenknighthughes the same part you mentioned may seem weird. lol I definitely would feel weird being only sober person at a bar. It wouldn’t be as fun for me. Think I’d be jealous too. Probably different when you quit alcohol for a necessary reason that’s affecting your life negatively.

I said I don’t think there’s anything wrong with ppl who choose to keep drinking. Alcohol is a poison, just like processed foods, just like most of the food we eat that man made, it’s ethanol. I don’t think we should “ban” alcohol but I do think the topic is avoided - it’s not good for us, let’s stop acting like it’s ok. I think we all need to pin our vice, I chose to not select alcohol as mine because the negatives were too high. That’s my take.
