I love the idea of “food as medicine”. My good friend, who lost about 100 lbs by changing his diet and lifestyle, likes to say that too many people “eat for sport and not for nutrition”. And that “America has the best professional eaters on the planet” 😅.

We were recently on a trip that included a Chinese group. The Asians had a great time, walking, exercising and laughing. The Americans on the group complained about everything and refused to walk even a few hundred yards. Of course, the Americans were gobbling heavy American food while the Asians ate sushi and more traditional food. We hung out with the Asians even though we are Anglo.

Really appreciate your channel. Also enjoyed your motorcycle channel. Common interests. My wife and I have been vegan for 29 years. Steadily have moved towards whole foods plant based. For us I think the evidence shows we made the correct decision. My wife is a mirror image twin. Sadly her twin who ate the SAD, died from a brain aneurism. She had most of the common health problems associated with a heavy animal based diet. I live with Marfan Syndrome. I have already surpassed my life expectancy by more than 20 years. I have managed my issues by listening to my body and experimenting. I avoid doctor's and the American health care system. From reading the China Study I surmised that doctors and hospitals kill about a half million people a year in the U.S.. Great video. Always look forward to your next one.

It’s not science, but it’s hard to ignore the things we observe first hand, and not draw some conclusions. The longest living people I ever knew personally were 1) my great grandmother. She was a German Jew that died at age 98. 2) my long time ex’s grandfather. He was a Haitian Seventh day Adventist. Died at 96. 3) my wife’s grandfather. He was Thai and died at 104. One white, one black, one East asian. The only common thing amongst the three I can think of was that they all were either vegan or very close to it.

I have nothing but respect for people who do the uncomfortable but right thing. Thank you for using this platform the way you do!
I'm not American but German and I was concerned by the statistics that Germans have one of the lower expected living ages in Europe although we are one of the richest countries with highly accessible health care. I came to the same conclusion that our nutrition plays a big part in it. But also how we work, how we have less time to cook or walk or care for family, for sports, hobbies etc. We also often lack our own houses or gardens we could work on (ergo getting daily movement). And we, as a culture, really like to complain a lot lol.
I can only argue that my personal health has extremely improved since I switched jobs (less work and also less money, but more time to cook healthy and walk a lot everyday with my partner, starting to lift as a hobby, stop spending my money on BS etc). Our minds and bodies have to align to be healthy. Money alone can't buy that, but it helps (in buying better quality food, affording to take time off and investing in healthy habits instead of just consume more stuff).

Wo kommst Du her? Ich komme aus dem bergischen, das ist zwar Milch dominiert, aber mit sehr vielen Bauerneintöpfen, Obst und Schwarzbrot. Die alten Leute, die traditionell leben, fahren mit 90 noch Fahrrad und Auto.

I didn't know about the one comparing SDA's with other Americans who don't smoke etc. So often claims are made that the only reason SDA's live so long are the other variables besides diet. I point out that those SDA's who don't eat meat are healthier and live longer than those who do, but that study will really help!

Noodle, refined carb, white rice, high salt constitute large part of their diet. Hence, official average life span of Chinese are around 75, given their less advanced medical system and drug industry. It is arguably healthier than Americans but not that much. Albeit the old generation is much healthier than the younger ones (plagued by ultra process food).

Eating processed & junk foods are seen as a character flaw.

I'm vegan for the animals not for health. I come from an engineer family we all die young because of the stress that comes from our jobs. It's great to hear that some vegans manage to get very old and stay fit till late in life. That's awesome. I still think the main reason for being vegan should be the animals tho. Have a great day and thank you for the video.

I used to have a friend that was very uneducated, high school drop out drug addict. He had this impression that we didn't know how disease works and didn't know how to prevent being a decrepit old person slowly dying from all kinds of ailments.
Its heart breaking to think of after having studied nutrition for the last 5 years and being fairly well read on it now, knowing how wrong he was, that he always said he didn't want to get old because it meant being sick and nonfunctional, so he planned on overdosing on drugs so he didn't have to suffer old age. If only he knew how to look after himself.

I hope you wil do those videos, those gifts for a very long time…. I really do. Beside that, the fantastic drop in life expectancy in ‘20 still remain murky to my eye…. Thank you very much.

I’m glad we went to all that effort to program our actuarial tables to reflect the improvements in mortality that were CERTAIN to arise. Other than missing the magnitude and direction of change,, we were spot on.

Good video. These types of videos help me put together my own nutrition and well being philosophy. There is so much misinformation around nutrition, some of it promoted by industry lobbyists. But there is also something going on in America right now where the most popular people in any field of study are often the ones with the least rational and researched basis. I won't get into politics but the same thing is happening where the flag waiving self proclaimed patriots act in ways that go against democracy.

Been a big fan of you, Gil and Simon for a long time. I went to a McDougall seminar in 1992 and subscribe to his diet. I loved that both you and your guest both validated McDougall’s stance on white race.

Hello Chris. My comment is not related to this video but this seemed the best shot you would see it. You have called Marion Nestle a national treasure. I agree. I know another one. You. Thank you, sir. Your pre-Plant Chompers story is fascinating and I only know some of it. I hope you consider an autobiography some day. Best to you and your family.

Ha! Thanks! I just sat for an interview with Simon Hill, who I admire deeply, and I thought he was going to focus on nutrition, but he got me to tell all kinds of crazy stories about my background. We'll see what the reaction to that is when it comes out. 😁

I'm finding the headline graph particularly fascinating (personally). While I maintained my vegan ways throughout the pandemic, I eventually noticed that I had developed a bad sweet tooth eating lots of sweets and processed food (along with less exercise). I eventually took a long look in the mirror and raised myself to a higher standard of exercise and diet, as I read the graph it seems for many the coping mechanisms went off the rails and have not returned.
Another perspective might be that many Americans were already living a lifestyle very close to death before the pandemic, and the pandemic sent them over the edge.
At any rate, it should not be a lower level (sorry Chris) diet vlogger bringing this to our attention, It should be politicians, news media, actors and sports stars. But that is not the case. I don't think we'll be able to sweep this under the rug.

One thing I didn’t comment on because no Asian I spoke to wanted to talk about it for fear of anti-Asian hate: their vaccination rates and mask wearing was much higher than other groups…

Most analysts think that a privatized health system is a factor in this life expectancy gap between the US and other countries with comparable income that have socialized medicine. As expected this video focuses on individual solutions to systemic issues, a framing that tends to unsurprisingly enhance social problems.
