When you make a bonfire, located in the same area where there are tree roots, you must be sure that when you put out the fire, the heat from the ground has not started a pyrolysis process of the roots. I have seen smoke coming out of the ground on two occasions one day after another camper left the camp leaving the fire out. The correct thing to do is to pour enough water or have dug a hole, before lighting the fire, to eliminate the roots.
