This was a very clever, satisfying theme gimmick. And for most of the answers it worked remarkably well (shame about "All Sorts", that one was actually a bit of a stretch). This was my third ever full, no hints solve of a Wednesday puzzle. I'm slowly getting more proficient, although I still feel it'll be awhile before I'm ready to take on a Thursday. But It was interesting to see Chris struggle in an area that I actually got filled out fairly easily. For me it was, as usual, the bottom right where nothing was adding up for the longest time.
I thought a posy was a small bunch of flowers and have heard it used many times like that eg in our hotel each table would have a posy on it. However it seems that it does also have the meaning of a single flower.
One day I'll learn to delete answers that look good early on but turn out wrong. Today was not yet that day. I had rose as the answer to 1 across for a looong time.
Does Chris know all the constructors by name, or is it listed somewhere what puzzles they worked on? I’ve always wondered. 58:50 for me today. The FRAZZLE/YUTZ/LAZES tripped me up since I’ve never heard ‘vegges out’ before and idk Yiddish
I saw the shaded "F" and "A" of "FRAZZLED" and decided randomly that it must be "Fa La La" or something and that it was going to be holiday-themed and I was therefore very confused for a good deal of the puzzle.
I think the creators were pointing more towards what he was actually studying. So, yes, pedantically he was studying genealogy and inheritance, but more at their intersection: genes. You can study something you don't know yet exists!
At least we now know that Chris is not an AI bot. As the Cartesians say, he struggles therefore he is.
I enjoyed the theme today, and was reasonably pleased with my time of 48:18.

ACES can also mean a pilot who has 5 or more air to air kills in dog fighting. So that would be an apt subject for having good aim as well

I, too, struggled in the southwest corner of the grid. It was a tough end to the puzzle, compared to the rest of the grid.

I Feel your pain.

first encounter with 'cineaste' definition as an enthusiast and not filmmaker or auteur réalisateur... J'aime.

A little pedantic, but.... Mendel did not study genes. They were unknown to him.
