honestly this song is so underrated. when people think about disco from this period most people immediately think about the bee gees. and rightly so as a lot of their stuff is timeless. but this one song easily stands up there with the best disco of that era.
Yet this is a song they were not happy when released in Sept 1978. Shows how incredibly demanding Benny and Bjorn were.... it is one of the gems of the Disco era. It is an ode to Stockholm.
I still own the original vinyl single and it always was one of my favourite ones. But it never became a huge hit it used have deserved to be.Wonder why...Might be because of the Bee Gees supremacy that year?
Hm, I was a huge ABBA fan in those days and didn´t like this song as much as most of the others. Something´s missing here, the refrain is okay but the verse is not loaded with enough music, if you know what I mean. It sounds pale and not as superior as it should compared to the other achievements ABBA made. Everybody who went disco without really having a foot in that door, somehow failed. Barbra Streisand tried it more than once and her her vocal qualitites are really low - even on "No more tears" she is vocally dominated by Donna Summer.
very strong chorus though....at least when it first kicks, but then it fades a bit. ABBA was probably a bit too classy to do basic disco songs. (Im a big BeeGees fan btw)

Benny Andersson playing for "those who have ears for that", coming directly from the softness and detail oriented classical music - he able to pushing same complexity into the pop-sounding, which originally planed for much simplier form and object... Benny pulling up the pop into same level as the classical, and for this he need extra geniousity and very good taste...

After many years now I'm in my 30s, from my teenage to these days I've been listening to heavy metal and classical music mostly. Now I've rediscovered Abba and I'm really enjoying their music. I haven't listened to them earlier because of my "metalhead ego" and I really regret for that. Greetings from Bangladesh!
Nice you gave to you the opportunity to listen to them, I listen their music since I was 11 and I used to be bullyied by my classmates about it, even people from my family used to make comments like: Don't you listen to "regueaton"? which has been the "coolest" music gender in Colombia for years, but I just never cared and never will.
Like what you like - I am an overgrown emo kid in my musical taste, stuff like FOB, Paramore and MCR among others, but I love ABBA too. They knew how to make music that appeals to all emotions.
Those were the days when the way you were born didn't matter. Four "normal" looking young people without immaculate teeth, plastic surgery faces or BBL's. Just good make-up and hair, nice clothes and that was it. At 11, I thought both of the guys were INCREDIBLY ugly and unattractive...but it didn't matter, because it was about the MUSIC. Thinking about that, I realize that the whole 24/7 MTV video's, starting somewhere in the 80s, probably developed, from the "need" to have TV performances in music charts, like Top of the Pops, in Holland TOPPOP andsoforth. I was born and raised in Amsterdamned, Holland in '63. When the show Toppop came on, and they couldn't get a band to perform "live", there was either a video (thinking of Bohemian Rhapsody and the likes), or Penny de Jager did a choreography with her jazzballet- dancers...that was dull, mostly. But seriously: Wuthering Heights, by Kate Bush, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Boys, by David Bowie and what not, ALL had some sort of videoclip avant la lettre...and ABBA. Happy memory: me at 14 with my first "boyfriend"(holding hands and kissing. Oof! Exciting!) and both of my parents, all dancing together in the livingroom on "Take a chance on me" by Abba....❤😂❤😂

Loved and love Abba since I was a kid. Growing up in a Soviet Union, it was one of a few bands that I really enjoyed from outside that nation. Now, years later, having been in US for about 43 years, I enjoyed this music on many occasions, as young teens and adults, dancing to it, listening and gifting albums to friends back in a day. This song, has always been at the top of my list of most favorite. Sure, I liked many, most Abba songs, but this one just appealed to me so well and just love it, the music, the lyrics and everything about it. Great and timeless music.

I can't believe I haven't heard this song before... this must be one of the strongest songs I've ever heard, and I'm normally into metal stuff. Heard it on the radio just yesterday and at first I didn't even pay attention to the song, but when that melody kicked in at 0:30 it flashed me so hard, it's beyond words. And when that first disco part kicks in the second time at 1:23... just WOW. I know that Bjorn and Benny are the song writers, but damn... the girls sing this song so perfectly.
The two "bridges" in the song, the first beginning with "I know what's waiting there for me" and the other with "I love the feeling in the air" is the most magic with this tune. They sound almost oriental and the changes in pace is what makes this song so good.
Naah. This is only another ABBA song. Maybe it got 13 million views and +2 600 comments but still only a simple pop melody from a now long forgotten group...
There was about a six year period from the mid 70s to the early 80s where everything ABBA put out was brilliant. They were so in the zone. This isn't even considered one of their major hits and yet it's still awesome.

I am reading a book from a feminist writer, "ABBA Gold," by Elisabeth Vincentelli: The two male composers acknowledged that without the girls there would have been no ABBA.
They had the elite. Everyone turned up to help out. They had Ledin, Benckert, the bluesy Mats Ronander, a cast of thousands. One suspects they had a lot of fun.
Massive metal and goth fan here - to many people ABBA are also like Pink Floyd who many metal heads like. For some if they are going to listen to pop it will be The Beatles as the ultimate, for others it's ABBA. ABBA are just genius Bjorn and Benny are Lennon and McCartney to me or Hetfield/Ulrich. The ridiculous costumes of ABBA detracted a bit from their music (they even said the costumes were ridiculous). Those two guys got the best 70's disco drummers with so much push, pull and swing - playing all around the beat. And many people know Lemmy was a huge ABBA fan amongst other things people would not expect like Little Richard who was his hero.
I have always been amazed by the modesty and quiet lifestyle of these talented musicians. In 50 years of knowing them, I have never heard of any scandals, orgies, drinking bouts or drug addiction. Just an example of decency and hard work.❤❤❤

Summer Night City is and has been my all time favorite Abba song over thirty five years. My family and I went to Greece to visit relatives back in 1984 and that is where I first heard of Abba. They were still very massive in Greece back then. I fell in love with the music and especially the singing. Frida and Agnetha are the greatest singing team in my opinion when it comes to harmonies. The Bee Gees don't even come close to Abba in harmonies in my opinion. I wish that I could have seen Abba live even just once but they broke up before I was even five years old. They are the only band that never reunited and if they had I would have gone to see them live in a heartbeat.
I had liked ABBA since Dancing Queen, but had never bought any of their records. But in August 1978, I turned 12 and got a record player and Saturday Night Fever for my birthday. My parents also started giving me pocket money, and Summer Night City was the first ABBA record I ever bought. The girls' vocals in the chorus are so strong. Love it.
When I used to go out nightclubbing way back many years ago, whenever the nightclub DJ played any of ABBA'S greatest hits, the dance floor would suddenly become packed full of people dancing to the music of ABBA. One of the greatest ever. 🇬🇧
😂 Remember this song vividly as it was the first to come on our radio from a caravan in Girvan,Scotland (Sep 1978). What a pleasent experiance that was!
I am a huge massive fan of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock music big time for over thirty years, but ABBA was a PHENOMENAL band with great songs. The first time I heard this song was my first trip to Greece back in 1984 as a little kid. ABBA was still extremely huge in Europe at that time and their music got played on the radio very often. I love most of ABBA's songs but my favorite has always been Summer Night City. In my opinion ABBA has the greatest vocal harmonies ever. The Bee Gees also have great vocal harmonies, but in my opinion ABBA are much better at it. I had seen a top ten list on this Heavy Metal website of things that Metalheads love other than Heavy Metal music, and ABBA was on the list. The list was actually in my case very legit as I love eight things out of ten that made the list.
I can SO much relate to this... if you like music, there's hardly a chance you don't like ABBA. My playlist can easily go from In Flames to the Bee Gees, from ABBA to Opeth, from Metallica to Earth Wind and Fire, from Gojira to Vangelis... but when ABBA comes up, I just got to listen to a lot of it. Dunno why. lol
There is a beauty thats unmatchable in this song. In the beginning there is the noise (good type ofcourse), the chorus, the wall of sound (so typical of ABBA), and then the song changes to a deep slow serious but beautiful singing by Agnetha after about 30 secs from the beginning of the song. That pulls you into the depth of this amazing song.
This song is not only one of ABBA's best, but is one of the best dance, urban, torment songs ever written, solid from the first to last note....... Love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two "bridges" in the song, the first beginning with "I know what's waiting there for me" and the other with "I love the feeling in the air" is the most magic with this tune. They sound almost oriental and the changes in pace is what makes this song so good.
I agree!
Yes! I listen to it over and over again to hear that part! And I can't stop. The way that synth climbs up and back down hooks me every time!
Naah. This is only another ABBA song. Maybe it got 13 million views and +2 600 comments but still only a simple pop melody from a now long forgotten group...
Love the windchimes and synth arpeggio during these bridges, they make the song uplifting👍👌
@@user-mv6he6gl8m Abba is legendary. They're still relevant. Their music will never die. They're already a classic.
the most underrated ABBA song in my opinion. whatever’s happening at 0:46 makes me feel like i’m levitating
vital and thrilling. u can feel the electricity
Reminds me of being young and full of energy and hope 👍
Was für ein geiles Disco Lied. Es hat auch noch heute seine Platz !
There was about a six year period from the mid 70s to the early 80s where everything ABBA put out was brilliant. They were so in the zone. This isn't even considered one of their major hits and yet it's still awesome.
Love this so much. So underrated song. One of their best ❤🎉😊
아그네타님과 안니 프리다님의 화음이 너무도 한목소리 환상적인 보컬 두분의 멋진 화음에 찬사를보냅니다
Удачи вам здоровья!

Their best song. The sense of urgency is not wasted here.
A very happy 71st Birthday Agneta Åse Fältskog 5 April 1950, Jönköping, Sweden. She wrote her first song at age 6 and went on to being part of an legendary international musical group. Cheers Agneta !!
I was a huge fan of ABBA for past 1 year. And I can't believe I never heard this song, seems to be one of their best. So freakin' underrated

I walked with each Song through my Life and still every Song is a new world and new Life for me
As a nearly 27 year old who grew up listening to ABBA with my mom, this is BY FAR my favourite ABBA song ever. This is so good. Of course I mostly listen to stuff I heard in my teens like most people do,but this one holds a special place in my heart.
Reading all these comments is such a joy.
The cool kids in the 90ies hated ABBA. But what do they know?
So happy we got a few new songs and Abba Voyage. Never thought this would be possible 30 years ago.

There is nobody like ABBA.
Kocham was muzyka miłości Kochan bardzo muzykę jest piękna muzyka miłości
I am reading a book from a feminist writer, "ABBA Gold," by Elisabeth Vincentelli: The two male composers acknowledged that without the girls there would have been no ABBA.
Another masterpiece from ABBA...such great band with great songs

How am I just discovering this song? This is a banger!
The bass line alone in this song makes it a classic, no need even to mention the rest of this masterpiece!!!👍👍... love From Ireland 🍀👍💯
Finally in 4K!! Amazing!
Обожаю ABBA! Нет срока годности их песням! Никогда не выйдут из моды!

спасибо АББА! вы и юность неразделимы!
эта песня была у нас популярна?
I regularly listen to ABBA. How the hell did I never hear this song until today? It's fantastic!
One of the most underrated ABBA songs, IMO. Lush production, incredible voices and soaring melodies. What more could you want in a song?
Always forgotten when it comes to ABBA: Rutger Gunnarsson and Ola Brunkert their fantastic Rhythm Sectionists.
They had the elite. Everyone turned up to help out. They had Ledin, Benckert, the bluesy Mats Ronander, a cast of thousands. One suspects they had a lot of fun.
De är inte att leka med. Suveräna.
I remember them.
I think a lot of people appreciate Rutger and Ola. We’re just not very vocal about it lol. But yeah, they were fantastic 💗
I’ve loved ABBA since I was 5, I’m now 47 and love them even more!
ABBAは時代を超越する素晴らしいバンドやね。
,ABBA--лучшие! Это на все времена!!!
You can even see the metal bolts of the boat in the harbour. This 4K version is way better than I have ever seen this video.
dancing and singing to summer night city at ABBA Voyage was the best experience of my life !!
It really is a great experience 😍
we have had the best times ,the best music ,the best bands Abba was one of them
Im a huge heavy metal fan, but i absolutely love ABBA!!! How much of today's music will be still be playing in 40+ years ❤
Have you listened to the Therion cover? It's masterful.
Admit it, you came here because of Therion cover. 😂
Black Metal fan here, Abba is great!
❤❤❤😂❤❤❤❤❤😂
Just an example of decency and hard work.❤❤❤
Still my favourite ABBA record. Followed very closely by Gimme Gimme Gimme.
ABBA + Disco = Perfection.
None of their masterpieces are similar to each other , quite unique I would say!
Frida and Agnetha look insanely good here. I wish I could have danced with them in the video ;-) Such a brilliant song 💛
ABBA FAN SINCE 1974. ABBA'S MUSIC SOUNDS AS IF IT WAS RECORDED YESTERDAY. ABBA, STILL THE BEST MUSIC EVER RELEASED, AND WERE WRITING 2021, RESPECT🤩🤩🤩🤩
Nice 👍👍👍
I do agree...ABBA is a genius piece of musical handcrafts....
@@ulfutstrand Yep, and now Bjørn has confirmed that 5 new ABBA songs will arrive later this year on BBC NEWS last month, as well as an ABBA avatar concert movie. To hear Agnetha and Anni-Frid harmonize again on new ABBA material, what a ABBALICIOUS treat. Maybe Bjørn will take on vocals on one of the songs. Have a GREAT sunday🤗
@@erikskifte8862 This is like Jesus coming back...in the shape of ABBA.
@@ulfutstrand Yep, just much BIGGER than anything else. U know Bjørn confirmed that 5 new ABBA songs will arrive later this year, as well as an ABBA avatar concert movie? I think that ABBA's got something more up their sleeve. I know I dream BIG, imagine them releasing a whole studio album just before christmas. Sooo looking forward to hear the girls harmonize again on new ABBA material. Maybe even Bjørn takes on vocals on one song.U have an ABBA DABBA DOO DAY🤗
Summer Night City is and has been my all time favorite Abba song over thirty five years.
I think they've reunited now
TAXI !.....To the seventies please !
il travel with you.😢 but alas we must push forward into the unknown, with JESUS CHRIST preferably. The creator of ALL
It’s more like the 80’s :)
🚕
Travis Bickle will drive us there in his taxi!
I'll get my coat....
Abba in our 21st century is like the Himalayas before the Pygmies. I am glad that my youth coincided with ABBA!
One of the more unheralded ABBA hits and is better for it. Still sound great.
Love it.
CANT STOP LISTENING TO THIS AMAZING SONG
Listen to Therion version, you'll be amazed.
Me either since it was first released!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate Therion's version :-( just because I wish I could do what they did first!!!! It's pure envy! LOL!!!
Jake Sanderson Amazing ??? Amazing for you...
Alberto Perez Perez, what you mean?
Унисон пробирает, ВРАВО, БРАВО, БРАВО. ABBA. ❤
When I used to go out nightclubbing way back many years ago, whenever the nightclub DJ played any of ABBA'S greatest hits, the dance floor would suddenly become packed full of people dancing to the music of ABBA. One of the greatest ever. 🇬🇧
This song sounds fresh in 2020
I know 🙃 ☺️ i Just love it and i'm 21. This was from my moms generation when she was a teen. But now me as a young adult in 2020, listening to this.

SO FRESHHHH!!!
It´s easy to realize these songs won´t ever die . Even those people that weren´t born enjoy this band .
I'm 20 this week and I LOVE ABBA and ALWAYS WILL!
Listen to it live at Wembley even better
cool bro
Check out Therion's version
Yeah bro. Listen the Therion's Summer Night City 😍💞💞💞
It's actually mostly Ann Frid
At the Abba concert, this track is stunningly good..... So powerful, so much deeper and raunchy
One of my favourites! The retro neon aesthetic was so cool
The beaming smile of 2 beautiful Swedish ladies at there prime tells me I definitely missed out big time on Stockholm’s club scene in 1979. 😢
This song is not only one of ABBA's best, but is one of the best dance, urban, torment songs ever written, solid from the first to last note....... Love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
