That Beautiful Land

  • This recording was made in 1961 by the Salvation Army's International Staff Band male chorus. The hymn has morphed into several versions, and it is unclear who is the true author/composer. The photos are mostly from Michigan. Here are the words:
    I have heard of a land

    I have heard of a land
    On a far away strand,
    In the Bible the story is told,
    Where no cares ever come,
    Neither darkness nor gloom,
    And nothing shall ever grow old.
    Refrain
    In that beautiful land,
    On the faraway strand,
    There awaits us a robe and a crown;
    In that city, we're told,
    The streets are pure gold,
    And the sunlight shall never go down.
    There are evergreen trees
    That bend low in the breeze,
    And their fruitage is brighter than gold;
    There are harps for our hands,
    In that fairest of lands,
    And nothing shall ever grow old.
    Refrain
    There's a home in that land,
    At the Father's right hand;
    There are mansions whose joys are untold;
    There the ransomed will sing
    Round the throne of their King,
    And nothing shall ever grow old.

    This is being played at my Mum's funeral this Thursday (23/06/22) She loved this when our senior band in Halifax (UK) played it and Ronnie Cliffe (the Corps Crooner) sang it. She was 85 and will be sorely missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Goodnight God Bless Mum and enjoy your "Mansion in my Father's House" (John 14:2 KJV) She was a remarkable woman.

    An appropriate song to play as a tribute to my friend, Ray Todd who has been promoted to glory.

    Such a pity that SA bands rarely sing in concerts any more. Eric Ball used to say that SA bandsmen were the “Salt of the Earth” as they could deliver the same message as with their instruments. This led him to composing and arranging other lovely songs ie. Love stands the Test.

    I too was at West Hartlepool Citadel and played in the YP band with Eric Tebbit. My dad Peter was the YP Band Leader. I was commissioned into the Singing Company at West Hartlepool Citadel and commissioned into the YP Band at Hartlepool Temple (after the name change). We moved to Manchester in 1968 just before my 11th birthday.

    Incidentally, I don't believe the words I posted with this are entirely those used in the arrangement. If anyone has the 100 percent correct words, feel free to post them.

      Ken, I just saw this post. The album was given to me as a child and I probably have listened to this song 100 times. As near as I can figure, here are the words. "I have heard of a land on the far away strand; in the Bible the story is told. There cares never come, never darkness or gloom, and nothing will ever grow old. In that beautiful land on the far away strand, no storms, with their blasts, ever frown. The streets, I am told, are paved with pure gold, and the sun it will never go down. There's a home in that land at the father's right hand. There are mansions whose joys are untold. And perennial spring, where the birds ever sing, and nothing shall ever grow old. -repeat chorus-." I hope that helps.

    Thanks for posting this, Ken. This was just never matched in the Male Vocal Catalog for contextual setting, beautiful harmonies and perfect ornamentation. To me as a ‪#‎detroitcitadelkid‬ it's bookmarked by Joe Pinkerton on Tenor and Jack Hawson on bass with me and my Dad somewhere in the middle in total awe - just as your beautiful as pictures portray.

      Of course, most of the above comments are to the credit of Eric Ball who composed (a bit more than arranged) such a beautiful backdrop. There are times such as this when nobody could ever do it better.

    Curious does the SA ISB still feature an all-male chorus these days? It’s a nice choir for sure!

    John, is this published somewhere in the SA archives of male chorus pieces?
