This is not only a break up song, this whole album is a break up album. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham broke up and a married couple in the band, John and Christine McVie broke up. The entire album is a break up album. And one of the biggest selling albums ever.
All 5 members of Fleetwood Mac were getting divorced during the making of this album and it almost didn't get made. Mic Fleetwood was also getting divorced from his wife during this time, well as the McPhees and Stevie and Lindsay. Rumors is an awesome album of what it's like to break up with your significant other. The album came out I believe in 1977. The chains is each couple's marriage, the running in the shadows is the affairs that each member had during that 2 year span of the previous tour and the making of the album.
This was their commitment song as a band. They had two volitile relationships within the band and if any of them broke up, which they did often, they had to commit to not breaking up with the band. There was intense drama coming from that band since they ALL wrote songs and they'd write spite songs about each other that they all had to sing. That emotion was all real. Any chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Don't break the chain. No one can be weak. No one can quit the band. That's what it meant.
Fleetwood Mac's album "Rumours" has sold 40 million copies. So there are plenty of hits for you to discover if you want. The band was actually started in 1967 and still is active.
I can't begin to tell you guys how HUGE Fleetwood Mac was in the mid 70's. I was ten and eleven years old at that time. When I first heard their music I thought I was in Heaven.
There were in The Late 1960s in The UK, as well, until the 3 original guitarists all left around the same time. Peter Green who headed the Band which was called " Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac got too high on LSD. Danny Kirwan became a drunk and Jeremy Spencer joined a Californian Cult, while on Tour, and this Blues Band re-invented themselves as a Transatlantic Band with Stevie and Lindsey.
Artists don't seem to take risks anymore. They used to experiment and try different things. If a song was a failure and nobody bought it then they would try a different idea. These days they don't seem to take risks and don't try new things. They have a formula that works so they release the same stuff over and over and over again. I don't know if it's the record labels pressuring them to make risk-free guaranteed hits or if it's the artists getting lazy? Electronic sounds don't help. Some artists have never even seen a real instrument before. In the old days, a drummer, guitarist, and other musicians tried different things and let the music take them somewhere. They played from the soul. How can an electronic instrument on a computer let an artist play from the soul?
Someone should give Brad and Lex their own radio or tv show. Lex feeds off Brad and she has a brilliant instinct for music, her enthusiasm is infectious.
Lex feeds off Brad? Brad is in a constant state of confusion and looking to put songs in boxes. Lex is the complete opposite and feels the music in her soul. Unfortunately Brad never gets it, gets it wrong and poor Lex nods in agreement but you can see she's thinking, "nope you're wrong", just to avoid embarrassing him, again, and again...
The female lead singer is Stevie Nicks, She went solo but she still played with the band I think. One of my favorite Solo songs of hers "Edge of seventeen!!! (1981) highly recommend!!
Christine McVie actually fronted more songs than any other singer through the history of Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham being second and Stevie being third. But Stevie definitely had the better solo career, and definitely has the most followers.
In the UK this song - at least the ending when the bass kicks in - was used as the intro for Formula 1 motor racing ! Gave this song a whole knew live ! Kids loved it even though they did not know the whole song ! Rumours is one of the best selling albums ever !
I remember visiting a Hi-Fi shop with a friend who was looking to buy some new equipment. In the listening room they had a system using a Linn deck, he shied away and asked me to put something on. I noticed that "Rumours" was in the record selection and that he had no clue as to who FM were. I selected "The Chain". The track started, not much response until the break. By the time the second bass note had finished he exclaimed "...it's bloody Murray Walker...".
This is in the second “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie. Awesome tune. The entire “Rumours” album is an absolute classic and one of the biggest selling albums ever
This will forever be the intro music to formula 1 for me. The BBC used it for years, and there was a fan effort to bring it back as the intro music on tv. The Bass/guitar solo section is fire.
THE CHAIN The song was literally spliced together from combinations of several previously rejected materials. The song originally represented the internal fractures - both romantically and professionally - of the band members, but eventually came to symbolize their triumph in staying together.
This is the only Fleetwood Mac song credited to all five members of their 1977 lineup. Since various pieces were assembled to make the song, they all had some contribution. This song came to represent the resilience of Fleetwood Mac and the strength of their bond as they continued on for many years despite their personal and professional difficulties. It was often the first song they played in concert

Except that it was Lex who nailed the genre and picked up on the nuances of the style and sound. And later picking up that they were askign/hoping for "the chain" to keep them together despite adversity. Spot on with her analysis. She really is underappreciated in how she does that. In so many songs, I'm amazed how she picks up on nuances so easily and quickly with new bands or different songs.
@@Frostrazor That's a really great point. Lex also inherently knew this music she was unfamiliar with, was post-hippie, pre-disco era, which was AMAZING!!

The song refers to the situation of breaking up but still tied together because of the band. When the album 'Rumours' was released in 1977, it became one of the biggest albums in music history - right next to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'... AC/DC's 'Back in black'... Led Zeppelin's fourth album... The Eagles' "Hotel California" ... In fact, it made the charts AGAIN today, after a Tiktok video went viral w/ the song 'Dreams' playing in the back. Despite their rocky relationship thru the years, Lindsey & Stevie seemingly put their animosity aside to work together in Fleetwood Mac in 1997. But in 2017, Stevie demanded that Lindsey be fired for the band to continue touring (he was replaced by 2 live guitarists) Christine McVie left the band in 1999... but was welcomed back in 2014. She & her ex-husband John seem to be on better terms today.
Love John McVee's base during the last part of the song. He keeps playing it and it just makes the song that much richer. You will keep going, right? Have you done "Dreams" yet? That very famous one is making its rounds again through the younger generation.
Great reactions! This album (Rumours) won the Grammy for album of the year in 1977. Sold over 10 million copies within a month of it’s release and over 40 million total. Lots of personal drama went into this album as the two couples in the band had broken up.
My original introduction to Fleetwood Mac was their 1968 "single" (Albatross) which is not a song but a piece of music. It was both mesmerizing/haunting & relaxing, thanks to that I looked out for any future work of theirs. Many, many wonderful songs followed & the discovery of Stevie Nicks as a lead vocalist extraordinaire. I hope you enjoy exploring them as much as I have.
Not really a lie considering how long they held together despite all the relationship issues that took place with each of them. That's why the band co-wrote it. About their bond despite the shadows.
@@Mike_Daddy Its a double+ metaphor ingeniously written by Stevie. Her and Lindsey had a "chain", John and Christine had a "chain", Stevie and Mick had a fling and the band as a whole had a "chain" that kept them all together through all of it. Maybe because they loved the music, maybe because they needed money for more cocaine. Either way it led to one of the greatest songs ever and a perfect analogy for the Fleetwood Mac era.
You wanna know what this album, and a LOT of Fleetwood Mac songs, are all about? Watch the live version of “Silver Spring” from their “The Dance” show. Watching Lindsey and Stevie staring at each other during the crescendo of that song is a perfect example of their relationship.
@@MusicFan1977 I like the studio version more, for sure…but the visual, visceral rawness seeing them staring into each other’s eyes, all those years later. Powerful stuff.
I love the way you both hit it on the head. Him with the break up song statement and her identifying the era and style. This song is next level amazing!
Got to watch Stevie live version of anything… esp back in the day… When they do this song live.. they will keep it going for like 5 mins in a frenzie… it’s awesome
This is a powerful album from start to finish! It was album of the year that year! And this music & lyrics still hold up to today. There was a lot of intermingling "shadows" "relationships" amongst the existing relationships within this band. This album expresses that volatile & sultry dynamic! One of my favorite albums of ALL TIME!
Fleetwood Mac ..Classic Rock.........Stevie Nicks is their lead singer. She made her own career. The song Edge of Seventeen is definitely worth a listen..
Wow, you just listened to one of the greatest bands of all time, amazing tune, more Fleetwood Mac please, I'd recommend "reahnon" or" go your own way" beautiful songs with real depth, cheers guys.
I just run across yall. I've enjoyed watching both of yall listening to songs I grew up with. Both of yall are equally enjoyable to watch. I love watching both of yalls facial expressions. Also Lex bouncing around as she gets into the music, both of you have great chemistry together. Keep doing what yall are doing. I watched your reaction to Rush's song Tom Sayer. Tell you something you may not be aware of, there is only people in that band, amazing all that music with only 3 people.
I love watching your reactions for the 2 different approaches you take to music. Lex goes with the feelings and Brad goes into the lyrics. As a child of the 70's and 80's I recommend not taking the lyrics as literally as music today... it tended to be more like poetry set to music... and a lot of songs were written on drugs lol.
Watching this perform this live on their concert, the dance is amazing, it was 20+ years after the original but probably 20 years ago… They are timeless
I was raised on this. It speaks to my soul through nostalgia but also life experiences. My mother is a feeling person and we were raised on all kinds of emotional music. Its one of the things she definitely got right. 🙌🏻💜
Here in the UK, the bass solo was the intro music for televised Formula 1 racing (1980's), for years as a kid I never knew what the song was called or whom the band was, great song though! Thanks for the reaction!
@@hgianos65 I'll stick with my answer. Fuck genres. Though if we do go with genres there probably are different genres of fucking as well. A pondering point.
“What are we dealing with here?” A band full of people hooked on drugs, breaking up, falling apart and then three different music fragments from different band members coming together to create an Epic song about relationships. The rest of the album covers similar ground but this track goes right into it…
Fleetwoord Mac had lyrics that some times where kinda vague and hard to interpret. This song came from the record "Rumours"... One of my top 5 favorite records. Every song is great, and I could listen to every one back to back every day.
Classic….they are hitmakers now for years. This is off of one of the greatest albums ever “ Rumours”,which they wrote when they were breaking up.At the time Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were married, and Christine and John McVie were getting divorced,so I like to say that “ Emotions wrote this classic album”.The songs have a prevailing theme. The Chain here represents the band itself.
Ok.... You NEED to do "Rhiannon" live on the Midnight Special '76!! All 5 members of Fleetwood Mac shine in that performance and Stevie Nicks (lead singer) freaking GOES OFF towards the end!! Fleetwood Mac are legendary and their lead singer, Stevie Nicks is the only woman ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame TWICE!! Once with F.M. and once for her solo album "Bella Donna"..... From her solo album check out "Edge Of Seventeen" (you may've heard it somewhere in your travels)... it's iconic!! The Official music video is film of a live performance.... Looking forward to a Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks journey with ya!! SIDE NOTE: Hope you do start (You talked about it in your livestream last night) a dive into the works of Chris Cornell with his bands: Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple Of The Dog and his solo works and covers EX: his acoustic performance and rendition of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" cover.... He took MJ'S simple Pop song and turned it into a whole other beast!!! It'll give you GOOSEBUMPS!!! ;)
BTW... just found you guys in my thumbnails about 3-4 weeks ago (I subbed, after your T.M. "Snowflakes" reaction)..... love your vibe and reactions and, Lex, you freaking rock girl!!! ;)
Yes RHIANNON! Best song ever. Not just because of my name but also because Stevie wrote the song before she found out there is an actual myth of the Celtic Goddess Rhiannon that is pretty dang close to the story line
If you know the back story on this song then you must watch the live version, the energy of hatred on the stage sent volumes through the stadium and made the performance a masterpiece
Man you really need to listen to a live performance of this. The guitar solo is much longer , goes harder, and watching Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckinham sing this while straight mean mugging each other the entire time (this is about their breakup) is intense AF
Thank you so so much for reacting to this one. It is a heartbreak and a breaking up song. Both Thank you for posting the lyrics with it..as well. The lyrics are very important when listening to Fleetwood Mac. But especially the depth of the emotion.. in this one! 😃.
It's 80's Rock n Roll. I grew up on this. Lead singer, Stevie Nicks, had a love reaction with guitarist Lindsay. She grew up in Colorado and had a solo band as well.

Lindsey returned the favour with ‘packing up and shacking up’ from Go Your Own Way, so I think he wins, hands down
Perhaps the best thing that could be said about it is, such amazing timeless music was the product of turbulent relationships.

He is one of the most underrated Guitarist of all time. His style of playing is epic.
@@bb47ishere amen took me 40 years to realize it
This sounds like the hollow body guitar I mean banjo.
I love that I grew up on this music in the late late 70's and early early 80"s
Yes me too, we definitely were blessed to have experienced those days 🤔
Love John McVee's base during the last part of the song. He keeps playing it and it just makes the song that much richer. You will keep going, right? Have you done "Dreams" yet? That very famous one is making its rounds again through the younger generation.
Those vocal harmonies still give me the chills many listens since the first hearing.
Lex is always rocking. Try "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac.
Great reactions! This album (Rumours) won the Grammy for album of the year in 1977. Sold over 10 million copies within a month of it’s release and over 40 million total. Lots of personal drama went into this album as the two couples in the band had broken up.
I saw them that album tour
We all had eight track back-in-the-day riding around with nothing to Fleetwood Mac Rumours everybody had it
Love how branched out you guys have become in your reactions.
Always entertaining!
Just discovered you guys. I really appreciate your interpretation of my favorite Fleetwood Mac song. Keep up the good work.
This was my mama's music.. I dig it ..this was one of theirsI really liked
Your mama has good taste, sweetpea.
This is the exact vibe Fleetwood Mac gives me too! It’s what I imagine the 70’s sounded like💯
Classic song, classic album.
Landslide is another good one
its a LANDSLIDE
Geez! When Lex is on, she is on! Great band and a great song. She will always be the Gypsy Queen.
"chain keep us together" is the lie, "running in the shadows" was the reality
@@vetteguy1985 Lyrics don't impress me.
@@Mike_Daddy Don’t comment on lyrics then, LOL
@@daviebananas1735 My comment was of the band's unity, not lyrics. A shame you missed that.
LOL'd like crazy at the 4:30 mark, give or take, when Lex guessed at 70's for the vibe...I sat here and said " Damn, she is good ! " lol
One of my favorite songs! Love how Lex grooves. Doesn’t hurt that’s she’s beautiful and charming as well!
Lindsey is soooo good! Guitar and vocals! Love him.
You guys are the best. Brad is all about the lyrics, which is cool, & Lex just feels all the music. Love it! Tool is my favorite band ;)
Love how yall love this song....Fleetwood Mac....One of the best
You wanna know what this album, and a LOT of Fleetwood Mac songs, are all about? Watch the live version of “Silver Spring” from their “The Dance” show. Watching Lindsey and Stevie staring at each other during the crescendo of that song is a perfect example of their relationship.
The live version is really good, but the original version that got left off the Rumours album were Stevie's vocals at their best.
@@MusicFan1977 I like the studio version more, for sure…but the visual, visceral rawness seeing them staring into each other’s eyes, all those years later. Powerful stuff.
@@MattKrogmeier Can't argue that.
Oh man, you really feel it when she delivered that "never get away, never get away" !
Cracks me up every time I watch it, the 🔥🔥🔥🔥 shooting out of Stevie's eyes at Lindsay 🤣
I love the way you both hit it on the head. Him with the break up song statement and her identifying the era and style. This song is next level amazing!
Stevie Nicks had the best voice ever back then
The story behind the making of this track is amazing. Has been my favorite FM song since the first time I heard it.
Got to watch Stevie live version of anything… esp back in the day…
When they do this song live.. they will keep it going for like 5 mins in a frenzie… it’s awesome
Stevie was a singer in the band, there were three lead singers.
One of the lead singers. Lindsey had the lead here.
drums...fleetwood...bass ...Macvie...Fleetwood Mac...best bass and drum combo EVER!...Love the way Lex lets the music take her!
Wow, you just listened to one of the greatest bands of all time, amazing tune, more Fleetwood Mac please, I'd recommend "reahnon" or" go your own way" beautiful songs with real depth, cheers guys.
One of the best parts about F Mac is how Lindsay's and Stevie's intertwined and wrapped around each other's voices, almost becoming a whole new voice.
You HAVE to listen to "Dreams" by these guys!
And Rhiannon
And "Gold Dust Woman"...I think we all could just really keep listing a bunch of songs...there's a long list
This is a rabbit hole, they have so many great songs.
True that!!
Thats exactly what I was thinking. I was expecting Murray Walker to come on next!! Go, go, go!! Rip Murray....
My F1 💕🏁🏁🏁
They were together from 1967-1995. Stevie is an AWESOME singer, her voice is one of my favs for female singers.
The breakdown is theme music they use for Formula 1 coverage in the UK.
It has been legendary for as long as I can remember!
The kind of song you listen to over and over and over…… till 2022 and on.
You should listen to this entire album, it is one of the greatest albums of all time. No exaggeration.
The Rumors LP was huge when it came out. So many great tunes from this album and band all together.
Gold Dust Woman is a banger. A lot of Heartache and emotions went into this album. Lindsay had to sing songs Stevie wrote about him
your right, I have chilled out to this song at so many camping trips, bonfires and BBQs.
"What ganre of music are we dealing with here"? Good music.
I just noticed that I misspelled genre. Ouch.
Rock
@@hgianos65 I'll stick with my answer. Fuck genres. Though if we do go with genres there probably are different genres of fucking as well. A pondering point.
Amazing analysis on the fly! In the final moments, you finished really strong with the interpretation.
Yes. It's classic rock. 70s. You listening to actual Rock Legends.
God bless classic rock! And he did.
“What are we dealing with here?”
A band full of people hooked on drugs, breaking up, falling apart and then three different music fragments from different band members coming together to create an Epic song about relationships. The rest of the album covers similar ground but this track goes right into it…
Thank you Lex for appreciating our generation of music
Fleetwoord Mac had lyrics that some times where kinda vague and hard to interpret. This song came from the record "Rumours"... One of my top 5 favorite records. Every song is great, and I could listen to every one back to back every day.
One fo the biggest alums of all time. This song is peak Fleetwood Mac for me. One of the best ever made,
Classic….they are hitmakers now for years.
Lex, you are such a positive light. It is so much fun to watch you love the music.
It'll give you GOOSEBUMPS!!! ;)
That is a great version of the song.
BTW... just found you guys in my thumbnails about 3-4 weeks ago (I subbed, after your T.M.
You two are the beautiful people ...keep it going.
If you know the back story on this song then you must watch the live version, the energy of hatred on the stage sent volumes through the stadium and made the performance a masterpiece
Another one of the Greats.
Stevie. One of the most beautiful voices to ever sing into a microphone.
Saw Fleetwood Mac in concert and they were so good! It was first time in a very long time that they all reunited and I was blessed to witness it!
Both
Thank you for posting the lyrics with it..as well.
The lyrics are very important when listening to Fleetwood Mac.
But especially the depth of the emotion.. in this one! 😃.
The entire album Rumors is like this. It tells a story.
Can’t wait for you guys to find Lynyrd Skynyrd
Omg Freebird live
YESSS
It's 80's Rock n Roll. I grew up on this. Lead singer, Stevie Nicks, had a love reaction with guitarist Lindsay. She grew up in Colorado and had a solo band as well.
