Cut Sir Elton a break. He's not hiding behind his piano or his sometimes silly costumes. This is genuine. God loves us all. And we are to love one another as he has loved us.
Beautifully done, Sir Elton! You always have and always will hold a special place in my heart. As for all the haters out there - get over yourselves! We are all children of God, and we are all loved by God. Why can't you learn to embrace other's differences instead of judging them? You're all so full of hate that you can't appreciate the beauty of a hymn sung by an exceptional performer.
I love this Hymn. I came across this version, and the Grace with which Elton sings this is powerful. And it was a blessing to me. I read some of the comments, and I would just ask, who are are any of of us to judge? Is this man's voice, his own prayer reflected in this soulful and heartfelt version, is his prayer any less worthy in the eyes of our Lord than any other who live their life while feeling the darkness deepen around them? Who has placed faith in false helpers, who feels the fleeing of familiar comforts? Who has oft left the Lord, and we all have, but still need His Presence, and Grace, and Guidance? God speaks to each of us in different ways. Is it not possible that when God is unheard while whispering through our hearts door, He might sing unexpectedly through the crack of a window left slightly open? Can we know His Mind? As He knows our hearts? This old hymn, sung by this man, brought peace and comfort to me tonight, and I am grateful. Thank you, Elton. And God bless you, sir.
Iam born to Hindu parents, I remember singing this song when I was in my kindergargen class, still remember this song & hymns. great job the christian community does to the world through charity, we love mother Theresa who lived in our country, in calcutta.
This hymn is about helpless and help before death. I have heard many versions, but Elton sings it wonderfully, with such a feeling as if Henry Lyte himself could sing it. It s very a touching version. And the arrangement is great. It seems an old song and new song at the same time
God gave Elton his gift, his phenomonal voice, he is a sinner as we all are but he does use his gift and influence to raise awareness and money for deserving charities. We as fellow human beings should look at the "plank in our own eyes'" not the speck of dust in our brother's eyes. music transcends all beliefs and indifferences and brings joy to those who love listening to it, where it emanates from is of little consequence if it moves you. If it doesn't move on and enjoy something else!!!
elton is rich, I am poor, with this sog we have union, and in anyway that this song is sung it means the same, god bless elton, god bless me and god bless the world, because we need it!
Very good rendition.. Keep up the good work.. God needs us more than ever in this civid crisis. God bless you and all who made this piece possible to be shared... Prayer to the Holy Spirit (St Augustine) Breathe in me O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amenb
Please - remember that Music is one of the most PERSONAL art experiences for most people. It is soundwaves, which are physical, and so affect us physically and personally. We have such strong feelings about music styles that we forget to find the absolute honesty and beauty - in this case - of the brilliant Brass Band, the Gospel Choir, and Sir Elton's very honest, original interpretation of this beloved standard of FAITH in our human state and passing.
I couldn't care less that he's gay, that is his own business. Elton John has a musical gift from God, that is what I care about. I had the privilege of seeing him live in concert, and he was very polite and gentlemanly. He stood up to take a humble bow after every single song he performed. I've never ever seen any other musician do that.
Beautful, heart-felt rendition of this song!!!!Judging from the comments made about this rendition, my belief has been reaffirmed that if Jesus Christ were on the earth in the flesh he would not be welcomed by the vast majority of so-called Christians. I'm reminded of the bumper sticker, "Lord, please protect me from your followers."
Amazing video. Even more amazing is who was singing it. Lets hope that the future generations people can move on, live with peace and not discriminate against others who are only just a little bit different to ourselves.
Now this is how i'm gonna put it, first of all any person who dislike how EJ's version of this song played out Too Bad. I like it. About judging, let's worry about our personal sins be4 our creator and let others be. I'm a straight black man in the U.S, but what does my sexual preference got to do with my abilities to perform? Stop The HATE People.
Gordon Parker We should gently encourage repentance for Biblical sins though if we love our neighbour. Without repentance, there is no salvation, and we should wish salvation upon everyone. Love isn't always about tolerance, but sometimes gentle rebuke and warning of the consequences of sin and denying Jesus Christ. Love this version, and love my neighbour Elton.
Stephen Charles Rowden how's that working for you? How effective has this approach been? I don't know you personally, but I am saddened everyday to see more people turning away from God because someone needs to point out their sins. It is not our job to save them, that's God's job and he is much better at it than any of us. Let God work within their heart and let others see the grace and love within ours by living the example Christ showed us when he walked this earth. Gentle reminders of their sins are not necessary they've been reminded enough. That's why they are turning away because they don't feel the love. I believe we could all stay busy enough with looking in our on hearts instead of what is "wrong" in others.
Lisa Huffaker I repent regularly thankyou. You appear to be accusing me, telling me to repent, whilst leaving the wilful sinners to rot. They don't know they are sinning often, when society tells them it's good. I'm out to convert no one...free will. But part of our duty of loving our neighbour is to warn them to repent. The trumpet player in Ezekiel was told to play the trumpet to warn of bloodshed. We must do the same, otherwise we are condoning sin, thus we have blood on our hands at judgement. I'm not talking hypocrisy, for were all sinners, but love. You sadly appear to want to appear 'better' than me! It's not a competition, it's about love, and our own sinful nature.
Lyrics: Abide with me, fast forth the eventide The darkness deepens, Lord abide with me When other helpers fail and comforts flee Help of the helpless, O abide with me I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness Where is death's sting, where, grave, that victory I triumph still if Thou abide with me Hold Thou thy cross before my closen eyes Shine throught the gloom and point me to the skies Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee In life, in death, O Lord abide with me In life, in death, O Lord abide with me
I think i like you! See the power of the song? It shall not be about the person who sings it but the circumstances it was made for. May God used Sir Elton John as his instrument to bring us together for a reflexion after all... What do we know? I acknowledge God and i believe that's all it takes!
1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

TheNakedWombat Not at all but looking at the picture representation attached to your comment page, suggests you are! You should read the scriptures before you comment as burying your head in the sand, is a bad as burying your head in the arse of ignorance. Calling me a troll does not make the facts go way. Adolf Hitler made homosexuals wear a pink star because the Nazi scientists made it clear to him through the eugenics programme that Homosexual activity, can not demonstrate any evolved benefit to a species viability and so falsifies the Nazi love of the theory of Darwinian evolution. So they were sent to the death camps along with the Jews. You have a serious problem which is your lack of knowledge in these areas of history. You obviously did not read my comment correctly as you would have checked the biblical references given of Romans 1: 18-32. before you make any more comments read these texts as you are in bad need of enlightenment. Until you do and are also capable of constructive and polite rebuttal don't bother as I will not reply. In an interview with US magazine Parade, the singer said he believed Jesus was a “compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems”. “On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East - you’re as good as dead.”
also to all you suppose to be christians. here is some advice i got a long time ago and it works. "don't talk about it, be about it". and most of you on here aren't about it at all. you just wanna talk bad about ppl and judge. "judge not lest ye be judged". "let he who is without sin cast the fist stone".
@TheLouiseuropa "I am a sinner and he loves me a great deal" Are you saying that you are a sinner too? If so, have you asked God to forgive you? Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord?

@MPNYPDFBI BEST COMMENT EVER! I was shocked when I saw this whole thing. I mean, when I saw the video I thought, "I like Elton John and I like "'Abide with me". This will be nice." Apparently that was not what other people thought.
It really shows through - people whose faith is questionable - their singing of these old hymns sound hollow - it's is like death itself parading as life.I am not happy to make these judgements but It feels so much that way.
@easy1355 again i don't get what you mean by me interpreting the scripture, how do you interpret something as love thy neighbour as thyself? or feed thy enemy? i'm in a real dilemma here, are these my interpretations of the scriptures or just a direct command to the christian?
To meleeECI: "do not judge, or you too will be judged" (Matt 7:1). "For in the same way you jugde others you will be judged" (Matt 7:2). "Do not judge and you will not be judged. Do not condemn and you will not be condemned" (Luke 6:37). "For the Lord is our judge" (Isaiah 33:22).
Well all those references say "do not judge" not "judge fairly." Have you asked Sir Elton John what his motives are. My Grandfather is not a Christian, but this hymn holds a lot of meaning for him and I pray every night that he will ask God to abide with him. Jesus also preached tolerance and understanding. I don't think calling a fellow Christian, who you do not know, stupid quite follows that message.
@pstm1188 - out of context? what?! Yes - Romans is written to Roman believers. In chapter 1, Paul begins talking about the depravity of mankind; how man has become full of sin (gives lists in 1:24-31) and "approves of those who practice sin" (1:32). Then, IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THAT PASSAGE, Paul goes on to rebuke BELIEVERS for being judgmental of them (2:1-3) then in vs 4 reminds them that it was "KINDNESS, TOLERANCE and PATIENCE" that led them to repentance from "the same things" -->(vs1).
@rantingpagan I don't know understand how being a Christian would make you loose your respect and goodwill towards Christianity. Would love for you to explain that. I'm guessing you're atheist. Do you know what makes me sad? That a singer that I have always loved does not "abide with God." But I still love him even so, for his singing and the kindness and money he extends towards the sick and communities. He is a great man.
Jesus never tolerates sin. The very first thing he does is says repent. What he does not do is sit by and allow people to think they are on a path to righteousness and that they can continue to live in sinful/willfull disobedience to the scriptures. Elton John doesn't even profess to be a Christian so stop defending him.
Cut Sir Elton a break. He's not hiding behind his piano or his sometimes silly costumes. This is genuine. God loves us all. And we are to love one another as he has loved us.

Really interesting version of a great hymn...I think it shouldn't be reserved for funerals; it's a great tune.
It was written by someone about to die. In spanish is used sometimes when night falls because of translation.

Lyrics:
Abide with me, fast forth the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord abide with me
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, O abide with me
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness
Where is death's sting, where, grave, that victory
I triumph still if Thou abide with me
Hold Thou thy cross before my closen eyes
Shine throught the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, O Lord abide with me
In life, in death, O Lord abide with me

What he does not do is sit by and allow people to think they are on a path to righteousness and that they can continue to live in sinful/willfull disobedience to the scriptures. Elton John doesn't even profess to be a Christian so stop defending him.
