Zakynthos is a port city in the east of the Greek island of the same name in the Ionian Sea. Zakynthos is located at the foot of the Bochali hill and is both the capital and the main port of the island. In 2001, 16,810 inhabitants lived here. The highest altitude here is on Skopos hill - 492 m. On August 12, 1953, the city was destroyed by a strong earthquake. 6 km south of the city is the international airport. The most important places in the city are: Dionysios Solomos Square, Church of Agios Dionysios, Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos, Statue of Dionysios Solomos, Saint Mark's Square, Stranis Hill, Bochali Venetian castle , Zakynthos' Museum, Metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos, Port of Zakynthos , Holy Catholic Cathedral of Saint Mark , Zante
