    This is great! I remember my mom and grandma using DOS back in the day (not sure if it was MS-DOS, PC-DOS, or whatever other version there was) but my first PC was a Win95 box and I never got into command line stuff until I found Linux in 2010. I just installed my first FreeDOS VM and needed some help figuring out what to do with it. I'm glad I found this channel!
    P.S. It's nice to find a community who appreciates the older tech like I do. My co-workers all think I'm weird because I prefer to tinker with the old stuff rather than the new shiny.

      FreeDOS definitely has its uses. If you like minimal "distraction-free" environments, FreeDOS gets the job done. Just load up the application you need, and transfer your data when you're done. I really like Microsoft Word for DOS as a word processor. Really easy to use! And I'm a big BIG fan of As-Easy-As spreadsheet!

    I never really use DOS, so this kind of video is very useful to me. Thanks.

    Hi, James! :) Welcome to RUclips, to both you and FreeDOS - officially, finally. :)
    It would be useful for the video descriptions to have links to the FreeDOS website, the facebook, Twitter and Patreon pages.

    Thank you for this. In the works of building a vintage AMD 5x86-133Mhz computer and this is great. I used to use DOS all the time in my Teens(40 now) and I can use Free DOS in place of other Monopoly based company DOS that are out their. Glad to see the videos and one new subscriber. Thank you again.

    Great video! I'm really interested in FreeDOS. I'd like to find ways to learn how to use. One thing I find difficult to understand are directories, paths, and executables. For me it's not clear how the directories are organized. What should be included in the executable search path? When software is installed using the package manager, it's usually not in the path. What are the best options? To modify the path variable? Or to just always launch it from the location where it's installed? For me these questions of organization and workflow are the main obstacles that prevent me from using FreeDOS more often.

      The typical way to do it on DOS is to put your most-frequently used programs/tools/utils in the PATH. For applications like a Lotus123 or WordPerfect, manually go to that directory and run it from there.

    I am wondering if there is a way to Force Delete a file in DOS? the DEL command won't work and I also tried to delete the file using DN2? The file is unable to be opened, copied, or moved. It's a .GRP file.

      Check the attributes with ATTRIB. The file may be set for readonly. You can turn it off with:
      ATTRIB -R FILE.GRP

    • @freedosproject
      @freedosproject  5 лет назад

      You can use TYPE FILE.TXT to display the text file. Or you can use EDIT FILE.TXT to open (and edit) the text file.

      I don't know that I am looking to write a converter from WordStar to some other format. But you can find documentation about the WordStar format at this website:

      I know this post is old but the VDE editor is very similar to wordstar and has support for RTF. There is limited support for old wordstar format so it should be possible to convert at least to RTF which Word can use.. 🙂

    no doc folder
    no tree command

    • @freedosproject
      @freedosproject  6 месяцев назад

      If you don't have a DOC folder under \FREEDOS (this video is 5 yrs old, the latest FreeDOS installs to \FREEDOS instead of \FDOS) and don't have a TREE command, that makes me think you didn't do a regular install, but probably did some kind of manual install without installing the tools. The instsaller will create the directory structure for you and install the DOS tools, including the TREE command.

    Maybe you should have cleared up in the very beginning of the video: What is FreeDOS? At least I didn't know - and I still don't.

    • @freedosproject
      @freedosproject  2 года назад

      FreeDOS is an open source DOS-compatible operating system. DOS dates back to 1981 - if you used MS-DOS, you know how to use FreeDOS.
      I've covered the history of DOS in another video on the channel. That would be a good video to watch.

      @@freedosproject Thanks for explaining. My main issue remains, though.
