    I love this call too :) I love how they stopped comparing Secretariat with his contemporaries and started comparing him with his sire, Bold Ruler, and said "Move over, Man O War!"
    Secretariat beat his own mile and a half record from the Derby -- a record set by Northern Dancer, which had stood for nearly a decade -- by nearly a full second.

      The Kentucky Derby distance is 1 mile & 1/4. Big Red sure did best that fantastic winning time in this race. He sprinted the entire 1 mile & 1/2 miles. SPRINTED the Belmont Stakes!!! A monumental performance, in the most important race of his life. 6/9/1973 at Belmont Park, forever remembered. Forever Magical. THANK YOU SECRETARIAT ❤️🌟🌈

    No one was able to fully comprehend all of Secretariat's achievements in this one monumental race. Not right away. It took a period of reflection to realize just how great this performance was. And then, as does today, it stands as a benchmark, a marvel for us to appreciate and enjoy.

    The "INCOMPARABLE" Secretariat. 2:24 I won't live to see another Secretariat in my lifetime. This race was out of this world. Later, he defeated one of the greatest fields of handicap horses in the Marlboro. 3 top 100 ever horses(Riva RIDGE, Cougar II, Key to the Mint, Travers winner Annihilate'm and Canadian champ Kennedy Road. On turf he defeated Tentam in the Man O War and a stacked field in the Canadian turf race. If he raced at 4 he would've been SUPERNATURAL as Pat Lynch said.

    What a thrill to find this radio call in its entirety. I’ve only ever found it before in partial form - only the race itself without the wonderful before & after commentary.
    These announcers were great - knowledgeable, colorful & just as excited as the crowd. How could they possibly not be? WHAT A MOMENT IN TIME FOR ALL OF AMERICA this race turned out to be. My goodness, did Secretariat deliver! He entered the starting gate a gifted runner & crossed the finish line a Legend.
    The announcers mentioned interesting facts I hadn’t heard before & really were a fun team. They did their homework well.

    • @fang3839
      @fang3839 5 лет назад +3

      Dave Zar he mentioned the last record was made because of secretariat’s dad bold ruler set a early speed. Quote from Wikipedia “Bold Ruler went to the early lead but was closely challenged by Bold Nero. The two set fast early fractions before first Bold Nero then Bold Ruler faltered. Bold Ruler hung on for third but was so tired after the race that he didn't want to return to the unsaddling enclosure. Gallant Man won convincingly and set an American record for 1 1⁄2 miles of 2:263⁄5.[13] This remained the stakes record until 1973 when Bold Ruler's son Secretariat broke it.[14]

    • @NebulizerChi
      @NebulizerChi 4 года назад +1

      Chic Anderson didn't remark on the otherworldly fractions, either --Sec was just about to the 1/2-mile pole when at last he says, rather matter of factly, "The first three quarters of a mile in one-oh-nine-and-four-fifths" (which is, according to Bill Nack, when pandemonium began to break out amongst the crowd at the track)

      Sir, I totally disagree with you, but that's fine! It's opinion. I love the fact that this one declared that the win was by more than 25 lengths immediately! It also makes clear that the fractions in the first 3/4 mile were so ridiculous, that what he did seemed all the more impossible. (Non racing people would not have understood that.) I do have this one as different, but up there equal to Chic's call, still love that whole call. He's moving like a tremendous machine and he's impossible to catch... but they weren't catching him. In fact, he was still moving away from them. :)
