How to Start a Cult

  • In 2004 I meditated in front of a fleet of Bentleys, laughed uncontrollably as 100 people around me spoke in tongues and very nearly attended an orgy full of gorgeous spiritual seekers. Since then I delved into the neuroscience cult psychology and have a few ideas of what it takes to start a cult. This month a new TV show appeared Netflix staring Peter Dinklage called "How to Become a Cult Leader." It was a great show, but I thought they missed a few salient points. This EP is meant to fill in some of the gaps.

    This is first of your pieces I’ve caught. I subscribed (which I almost never do). I like the sound of your voice (super important) and your content and how it was presented (polished, coherent, articulate). I obviously haven’t yet heard you do an interview. I definitely like this particular format.

    Osho is awesome. He was the real deal. How many books did he dictate? 100s. Really objectively genius level about human consciousness. He wasn’t a narcissist either. But still did the cult thing with his followers - I think it’s kind of inevitable when you are so talented. Like if Taylor Swift opened up a resort center where she came and sang her songs every day

There are no sex orgies in the ashram. Your video is a pack of disinformation. It's hard for me to believe you were there for more than 5 minutes!

      @@ScottCarneyInvestigates I don't know about any "modern gurus" but IMO it is impossible for an enlightened man to be in any way responsible for a cult, if cult has a negative connotation which I guess it does. Osho did NOT start out seeking any followers. He simply started talking about a few things from time to time and more and more people started to listen to him.

    You left out some things. Phobia indoctrination is key to retention. If you leave our group you lose your salvation is one phobia taught repeatedly. If you commit masturbation you will become a homosexual, this phobia plays on people's fear of becoming a homosexual, every negative weather event is portrayed as the wrath of God on the disobedient, the world is a scary place without our God, and many more phobias great and small are used to retain members in an abusive environment.

    If you don't see much difference between ancient religions, on the one hand, and Scientology or Mormonism (modern cults as a whole), on the other, it clearly shows you simply don't really know much about religion and authentic spirituality... Maybe you should read something written by Mircea Eliade on the history of religion, also Rene Guenon and Ananda Coomaraswamy about the authentic spiritual traditions first, before talking in a video or podcast about a topic that you don't understand that much.

    • @ScottCarneyInvestigates
      @ScottCarneyInvestigates  5 месяцев назад

      I've read Eliade. There is no difference between ancient religions and new ones other than time. There is no "authentic" religion--if there was there would only be one, right?

    • @Perceval777
      @Perceval777 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@ScottCarneyInvestigates Why would there be one religion when there are different peoples, languages and cultures? Of course there would be many different religions. But in the past most if not all of them had one thing in common - a clear understanding of the universal laws and higher principles, the non-dualistic nature of the transcendent, the cyclic nature of time, the deities' relationship to the world and humanity and the meaning and importance of ritual, unlike modern cults. Modern cults are a mishmash of blind faith, modernist naturalism, positivism and evolutionary theory, and they prioritize "feeling good". The Spiritualist and New Age movements are examples of this. So no, there is a huge difference between ancient religions and modern cults. You can even see it by simply comparing Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox Christianity to modern (pseudo)Christian sects like Jehova's Witnesses or Korea's Moonies. Rene Guenon has written very good criticisms against modern cults such as the Spiritualist movement, Eliade has written some too. Obviously, you are a materialist and an atheist and that's completely fine, but you need to understand that the difference is significant and it's not something subjective, it's an objective one and is well established in the field of History of Religion/ Religious Studies.
