    Im a manger at a Bike shop in California, purchased the Reign e+ two months ago and have had access to riding Specialized, Santa Cruz and Orbea. The reign to me offers the best value for performance out of any of these brands and rides just as well as any other. My strava climb times on the new yamaha motor by giant are faster than what I have done on a Bosch gen 4 Orbea wild and the new Specialized Turbo Levo, surprising as I was never a fan of the old Yamaha motor, always felt like it was a step behind. Now you have the reliability of Yamaha which is equal to the reliability of bosch in a better price point

      Just wait until something goes wrong with that yamaha motor. You will curse yourself and careless Chawn Weingarten who is supposedly responsible for ebike support. That guy does not care to respond to dealers inquiries for assistance.

    Over time, I've come to trust your reviews more than anyone else Rob. I've been watching you from your very early days; it's been great to watch your evolution as a rider, and I've always appreciated your open honesty about the bikes and their motors. Not many others talk about motor noise and other issues with such clarity. Thanks for the effort you put into each video.

    Incredible review Rob. You've raised the bar for production quality and I think everyone will agree the wait was totally justified. Been riding my Reign E+0 for just over a month and Magic Mary 2.6 SG front and Eddy Current 2.6 SG rear was a big improvement from the stock tyres. PW-X3 is not the most sophisticated for sure but I'm yet to fail on a climb vs my buddies on Specialized or Bosch so I think it's a bit moot and 200% support on the app feels a good balance of power and battery conservation for big rides - managed 1650m climbing on a ride the other week without fully draining it.
    I'd love to see you do some content on suspension setup for E bikes - I'm finding that running the rebound much faster than a normal bike helps make the bike more active on the trail - would be good to get your thoughts on how suspension setup on E bikes differs, any guidance when using high vs low speed adjustments and how they can help to cure certain characteristics/sensations.

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  2 года назад +10

      Thanks David. Suspension would be a video that I could do. I’ve also been running rebound fast, especially HSR on the fork, have tried almost full speed to help the front recover quick and keep it supple off the top.

      The battery can go a long way if you're conservative, I've tried a couple o tests, over 3 hours I managed 40km and 1700m climb riding pretty conservatively a week or so ago, and had over 2 bars of battery left. Then went out a couple days ago, was lazy and mostly went power level 5 with a bit of 3, and still managed 31km with over 2 bars left in just under 2 hours....The bike is an absolute tank though, just ploughs through everything

      With my reign e+ bought in this winter my best run was (with 12 °c) 1280m d+ and 32 kms. I'm 85 kgs with clothes and the run was with second assistance (trail).
      I think is was too bad as range. I push on the pedals and I was thinking there is something wrong on the battery. @@deadgum11

    • @th_js
      @th_js 2 года назад +1

      "Giant hired me to test the bike", said in description.
      He does also claim that he basically is truthful about the things he says, but still.. I wouldn't trust a review like this completely. He is literally getting paid to ride and review the bike, and I'd assume that, if there were any really big downsides, he wouldn't exactly tell the thing as it is. Why I think this is that if he talks shit about the bike and says it's terrible, I doubt that Giant (or any other brand in a situation like this) would send another bike to be reviewed.
      This is by no means what I know, just what I think.

    • @grandpabrogan
      @grandpabrogan 2 года назад +2

      @@th_js I watched the video on my smart TV (then made my comment quickly on my iPhone) so I didn't get to see the description. I'm not new to product reviews and I'd like to think I can smell marketing BS which is why I stay clear of certain MTB channels. I myself own a Giant Trance e+3Pro (2019) which I love - and am familiar with the pros and downsides of the Giant format. Two negative things that are usually hidden from eBike reviews are weight being on the heavy side, and pedal-strike (not unique to Giant). In fact, if these two things were not mentioned in Rob's review I would've been suspicious... but they were. What impressed me was that he reached the same discoveries that I have from personal experience, regarding the upsides of these downsides. A low BB is stable on technical sections, and a heavy-ish eBike can yield some advantages in cornering traction and residual forward momentum. Yes the Yamaha is a low-cadence torque monster, yes it'll want to go if the pedals are used as a foot rest (one learns not to) I happen to like it, and yes the fat HighRoller is a low resistance DH speed freak but easily slips on uphills when wet. I picked up that the dropper post was too short for him, which he later mentioned. I agree on his take on the lack-luster electronics how useless the Giant App is. The only pleasant surprise for me was that the new Yamaha motor appears to be quieter (the old ones make a low gnarling sound when pushed)... I prefer this to a high pitched whinning motor sound. I can easily verify this for myself on my next LBS visit. I'm glad that Giant went back to the 27.5 wheel at the rear (others won't I can imagine). And no, I'm not being paid by Giant ;-D

      @grandpabrogan 2 года назад +1

      @@pentonville2362 I neglected to read the description mentioning that Giant hired him to do this review, so I hear ya. But I can't remember any other "paid" reviewer that had disclosed that they had a nasty fall on a test bike (9:53). Maybe someone had done so before, but if that isn't an example of credibility then I don't know what is.

    I really must applaud the drone piloting skills on display from 5:00m to 5:50m. In particular the 'detour' taken at about 5:24m round the trees - it's very impressive to see this considering it's flying in reverse. The bike itself looks decent too, cheers for the review. I've only recently got into EMTBs with a Fathom E+ 2 (2021) being my first. I'm amazed at some of the climbs it's capable of - as you say, things I'd never previously try to tackle!

    The best structured + shot, bike not just ebike, reviews on youtube Rob. Hard to watch other channels where its just blurry slow mo of the tester shredding, and showing how rad they are, and you cant see the bike at all. Yours.. its the right balance.... plus a list of negatives that feel like they are born from living with the bike for a while.. Only addition id love to see is slowish walk around the bike in 360 so you can see it from every angle. Good stuff dude!

    I was lucky enough to get hold of an E+0 2 months ago for a day at Bike Park Wales. We have a view to race on it so our wants are slightly more focused in that direction. I totally agree that dropper is not long enough which is unfortunate but nothing thet can't be changed. The bike was great on downhill really planted so agree again with you Rob. The motor was a little disappointing for top end power however one thing keeps popping I to my head about this bike. I hear you say you didn't like the automatic mode but I must say it was the best bike I have ridden over roots on a climb. In BPW there is a steep ebike climb. It goes up steeply on a mud path then turns left into the woods and at this point no other bike we have tested so far could generate the grip the E+0 managed in automatic mode. Great bike overall and i have to agree its great value!

    Ive had this bike for about 3 months and Rob is spot on with everything. The low position is too low, the dropper post is too short and the rear tyre isn't the best. Other than that the bike is an absolute monster.

      Mate same here I have had the bike since mid December riding in dusty slippery western Australian conditions. New dropper post installed and got out over the bars bad pedalling on this flat but rocky trail. Have now flipped the chip to the high position after seeing this vid and taking it for a spin now.

    • @SUPERCOOLZZ
      @SUPERCOOLZZ 2 года назад +1

      The rear tyre (HR2) is a great and underrated tread pattern imo. It really just depends on your conditions.
      The bike is low, but the motor run-off makes it easy enough to ratchet to avoid pedal strikes.
      My main complaint is that the motor sticks out quite a bit and there's no easy way to fab a motor cover due to a lack of mounting points and the long battery cover.

    Ordered an E+0 yesterday because of this video.
    Update: Have had the bike a couple of weeks, low flip chip position is definitely too low, got quite a few pedal strikes on my first ride, was very lucky to stay on with one of them. Immediately changed it after that and haven't had a problem since.
    Agree with Rob that the dropper post doesn't have enough travel, I ride a medium and whilst the fully extended height is perfect, I could easily drop the seat another 50mm with a different post.
    Battery life and motor power is pretty outstanding to me after coming from an Specialised SL, over 3 hours I managed 40km with 1700m of climbing a week ago and still had over 2 bars left. Power is great, though I find it a little pointless to have 5 different modes, 3 is enough.
    Geometry is bang on, it absolutely ploughs through anything you can throw at it and feels extremely planted. I will say it feels a little heavy when jumping, but that's partially down to suspension set up, technique and coming off the back of an SL.
    Overall an amazing bike, great value for money, looks superb, very happy with my purchase.

    Thanks for this review Rob. This is probably my next bike, I'll just wait for the next year for software fixes for bugs you mentioned. It is good you did some measurements as well. In my opinion most manufacturers don't tell truth in their geometry pictures and it is important - for example this bike looks like it can take even more burly, 180mm fork (but now I'm afraid about its headtube angle in such case). So - please tell us your impressions on battery range in comparison to bosch, which seem to be a market leader in this area. Top review as always Rob. Just one question, I'm thinking of buying an electric one and at the moment I'm undecided between a Giant Reign E+1 and a Trance E+1.
    The type of ride I do the most is trail.

    I hope they have improved the motor build quality over the old ones, they used to always fail, either internal bearing with lateral knocking or random faults, their app and firmware was rubbish too, I've seen countless dropper post die within a month and rear wheels/hubs just not being able to keep up with the motor torque and exploding. However, these new models seem to be a really good bit of kit, I wouldn't have touched the older models.. my personal preference would be getting the base model and immediately swapping wheel, dropper and some other components.
    On a side note, your reviews are really good, the editing and content are spot on, good job!

    Yes, yes Rob. Great review. I'd been asking for this from you (even a 1st ride impression) as I'm nearly 4 months waiting for my Reign 2 to get to Sth Island (NZ), so this review, as other bike (or soon-to-be) owners have already said, are loving all but those small but annoying issues you mentioned. As a lot of opinions are typically personal to the reviewer, it is refreshing to here other than what sounds like a paid commercial. On personal gripes, I LOVE the feeling of the motor wanting to creep forward when resting on the pedals (as was the case with my older e-Trance SX), which allows for immediate engagement when stopped on techie climbs.

    Hopefully Giant has addressed their wiring issues... my 2021 Trance X E+ Pro has been down almost 4 months with a controller issue...but now they are now changing out wiring for the main cable and battery terminal🤬 I would love for my bike just to work since it is a great bike. I guess that what happens when Giant goes cheap and uses their own wiring instead of Yamaha's wiring😑

    Question please - what size, L or XL, do you suggest for a 187cm rider? I do a mixture of riding, XC, trail, and moderate DH. I realise it's a very subjective issue, just looking for some outside thought.

    Another cracking review Rob - The reign looks real good. I have the HB ALLMtn7 with the PWX2, which I purchased solely down to your review last year :-). Still really happy with it but as with most motor tech. updates I had started to wonder whether I "need" to be envious of the new PWX3 - doesn't sound like I do yet :-). Re: the auto motor modes I've found exactly the same on my partners Giant, but it feels much better and more responsive on the standard Yamaha programming. BTW Are you still doing the odd group ride in the Surrey Hills? - Be great to get involved in one :-)

Now awaiting my new Reign e+ 2. Value for the almighty $$, nothing comes very close to the specs of these Giant bikes. From riding a few enduro's, rowdier setup the better. Rob, I do have one question regarding noise bike might be making on downhill. I Got xl, +1, i love love this bike how it rolls uphill, and geometry on down. I did start to worry though, on very rough downhill sections bike seems to make cracking noises, seemingly coming from the motor. Motor functions just fine. On the very first ride, bike seemed to be really silent. Now I am not sure, is this normal, or might it be there is something loose on the bike, inside the motor or somewhere nearby?
    All the recommendations youve put about the equipement is quite spot on, I just cant understand why there are such good brakes on such bad disc rotors? Just like 170mm seatpost on xl, for my 188cm is just acceptable, But I believe 200mm woild do much more ...anyway, just curious if you have noticed any noises on rough downhills coming from the motor area. Thanks

    Worth the wait Rob, lovely job and some interesting tips on setup.
    Have to add though that it is disappointing to see in the vid description that Giant paid you the review the bike. Looking back on your previous videos I see that is not uncommon. While I appreciate you can run your channel any way you like, and have to choose what business model works best for you, and that you do retain editorial control, it is hard to believe that any review will be totally objective or critical in circumstances when you are getting paid by the manufacturer to produce it.
