Actually, I think Pokkes takes are based af because he actually thinks about issues logically and not emotionally, unlike many other CCs and commenters. No one cares about your feeling. Facts matter, not feelings. No one is pointing a gun at anybodys heads, forcing you to spend money. Take resonsibility for your own actions. Humans will always try to abuse one another, the chances for your current employer abusing you in some form or fashion is around 99.9%. People are not only greedy and stupid, they are also equally as ignorant. They do not understand a single thing that goes on around them and take every, single opportunity to play dumb and deflect the responsibility to someone else. Disgusting, literally.
TBH, as much as I love gacha games, they should be promoted as 18+, not 12+ I work in a secound hand shop and working with a lot of customers who also happened to be parents of young kids. And after sooo many talks with them and by doing constant observations of how they talk with their kids and how they approach their kids, I realized that Gachasmack is soooooo damn right A parent isn't always knowlegdable, a parent isn't always aware. A parent really does his/her god damn best but stuff often slips through the cracks And I often am hyper aware on moments a whole group of kids desend on the toy section of the store. Because they will do funny things when a parent isn't watching, even for a few secounds; like climbing up on the store racks or tripping over stuff, etc. Most parents tried to do their absolute best, they really do. But accidents do happened but instead of me becoming vile and mean, I decide to be understanding and be supportive I wish most CC's would understand kids and their parents

Pretty much a lot of Gacha gamers just can't admit that no one outside the internet knows what Gacha is. Was a pain when gathering data for my dissertation on this issue which the FTC just gave me another chapter to write. Just hoping both Gacha and the app store make it clear there's Gacha mechanics and explain it either in the start screen or website/app store. Genshin and NIKKE shouldn't have the same age rating as each other. Doubtful CC would take a stand against the media that made them money. Some people argued if Gacha is not gambling.
@@SyrFlora Apex legends really do need to be checked out but it's 16+ so less of an issue than 12+ games. It helps that CoD was majority 18+ but kids still play it (parents fault). Though EA had their rounds with the FTC 2015 I think. So until complaints are sent nothing will happen. I just remembered FIFA is EA..... My friend from work, who has never played video games, told me that he gave his 8-9yr old son his old phone to play free games on it. I warned him that he should make sure his bank account wasn't linked to the store. He said "I'll check into it tonight when I get home." After lunch, he came to find me and told me his card got declined at the cafeteria 😂 He ended up disputing the charges after I told him that was the best thing he could do and he got his kid a cheap tablet of his own to play games on. He had no clue that it would be so easy for his kid to buy things on mobile.

I generally dont understand how anyone would be mad at more regulations to gacha games. I thought we all understood that its a fundmentally predetory experience we deal with to play fun games.... like ive had to talk down my own grown adult freinds from making silly purchases in these games. Now imagine a child who has no grasp on money and its worth. Especially with how most of the kids play on their phones or a parents tablet. Google play and apple have 1 tap purchases and kids will just do anything to feel good. We need more restrictions and have for years! Its not even just a hoyo issue at this point! The taking advantage of children in the gaming space is a huge issue and has been an issue since micro transactions became a huge thing in the 2010s!!!!

Both things can be true at once. Yes the gacha nature is predatory towards kids especially, you should also have the foresight as an adult to not allow your kids easy access to your credit cards. Whether that's not letting them steal it, which is part of being a bad parent for not teaching your kids stealing is bad, or just ticking the box that makes sure you don't save your credit card information in genshin, there's some responsibility on the part of the parent as well.

you gotta remember these are 100% free games, they give you enough to get some over time do you see Fortnite giving out enough vbucks rock star putting out enough shark cards points and such with free dlc story content, no they usually charge you more for far less. see destiny or mmo any of the big updates. in these games are base game for everyone and free they aren't charging you vs a set 4 hour extra 1 time dlc.

That's what happens when a youtuber built their channel on the one game they play instead of oneself. You will see it as they rarely branch out of their content niche or rather they can't. If they were to post a video other than their content niche, their viewership immediately tanks when the decrease should have been minimal had the youtuber build up their channel around their persona instead. So of course they are going to defend whatever the one game that gives them the viewership(money) instead of the viewership themselves.
I live in SEA where most people are poor. The people who whale here are proud to do it since having money to spend in a pointless activity is a status thing to lord over the f2p peasants. I’ve also gone back into business and game dev since engaging with the gacha community showed how easily exploitable people can be and be proud to be milked.

Hoyo is predatory but I don’t get why people seem to think that restricting your kids purchases is hard. It’s very easy. Even though my credit card is saved to my apple account, for example, I still need to input a password or use my Face ID to actually confirm the purchase. I don’t know how it is on other mobile platforms, but I would assume it’s about the same. Usually they always have some other confirmation mechanism. That way parents don’t actually need to monitor these things because a payment would not confirm without their knowledge.
That's the thing on Google Play i actually had a pop up telling me if i want any further transactions to be auto authorized without going into my bank app. And i feel like this happened to some parents and they kinda forgot that this setting sits on their account regardless of their phone. So, when they decided to give little Timmy a tablet and logged on to it, they also give full acces to the credit card on that tablet.

That's why I always say to parents to delete credit card information so that their kids can't buy without their permission, or even better get a prepaid credit card, and put only the money you want to put in the card, so that your kids can't never buy more than you decide.

This broke the law and that is an objective fact (the FTC would not make this up, and Hoyo would take them to court if it weren't true). I don't think if they'd have screwed up that badly on something so easily proven that we'd have gotten the rest of it, but hey if you're already going after a company why not go all-in? The big outcome of this isn't the pocket change $20m fine. It's the changes the FTC is demanding for more transparency in gacha systems. This is a win for every player of all ages. The only reason we even have that details page that gives us the rates is because of previous rules being laid down years ago just like this. These are just taking it even further and demanding even more transparency into what your money is really buying you.

It was a combination of various government regulations and fear of even more regulation that we even have as much as we have now. Hard pity systems are necessary because of a Chinese law that it has to be possible to put a definite price the player can understand is the most it will cost to get something - companies have simply gone the route of making it as convoluted as possible (dark design) while technically complying.
and even after gov't regulations, these gacha companies are still trying to skirt around regulations to make purchasing these in-game goods as cryptic as possible.

I know when my card is swiped because I get automatic notifications sent to my phone immediately. So if someone stole my card or used it without my knowledge, I'd know pretty quickly... The fact that doro has so many likes on his first tweet is insane. That is a huge amount of actual phukkin more-ons which is the target audience they're farming for those sick monthly revenues. The crazy thing is that kids are a small percentage of this and it's a lot of vulnerable normal people. Game is not only dishonest about its exploitive features, it's built on them. There's a huge difference between an "In app purchase" and "Gambling" too as tags. The first one guarantees something while the other is there to steal your money. And how you shouldn't drink it? Most people know this but it's still there. It's called disclosure and being transparent even with common sense things like that. The game was hit with an +18 age rating because of the gambling, is disclosed on the app in several places and requires a confirmation with each and every purchase no matter what. It used actual dollar prices on ALL purchases. Then it'd be like a parent trying to get their kid into a bar + casino. If they got in despite that then the blame starts to shift you know? Not the case here as none of that is in place. Pretty pathetic display of dikk sucking if you ask me.
That is what I keep trying to explain to people. Gacha games should be regulated at the same level as casinos and online gambling at minimum: KYC, ID verification, and 21+ at minimum. My only compromise off the top of my head is to make the banners inaccessible without ID verification. These games normalize and get kids addicted to gambling on a psychological level and take advantage of gamblers without deterrents that surround normal gambling. The FTC went after Fortnite in 2019 for similar child targeted gambling and this is an extension of that investigation that started years ago and before anyone brings up FIFA, the FTC prioritizes marketing to children when it comes to legal grey areas like when they went after flavored vapes back in the day.
If you let your kids use your phone and you have your card info saved, that’s actually a horrible decision. Always always have them use a separate device. Just buy a used phone for them but don’t ever let them use yours

As for Pokke, even if the child gets reprimanded for the purchase, the damage will be done & companies won't refund(atleast ppl needs to be made aware of such issues). As a kid I never had access to my parent’s credit/debit cards. And as an adult, I got very far in Genshin as a F2P. I didn’t start buying Welkin until the end of 2024. I do agree that they should disclose that it’s a gacha system in the description though.
Look, I do think that there should be some kind of policy that forces kids games with in app purchases to have some kind of parental control system to make sure that you are not one click away from letting your kid have unlimited access to your credit card, but when your kid asks you for money for their game is it really that hard to take 10-15mins of quality time with your kid to make sure you know where that money is going? is it that hard to uncheck the "save my credit card information" check box? is it that hard to keep your credit card away from your kids?

Yeah, i agree with your point at the end of video. Content creators doesnt really mean anything to me, the only thing holding me from stopping playing gacha games is how much times i spent in those games. And how i also keep coming back to these kind of games. Now, i just dont take anything in gacha games seriously anymore. It's not just kids, I know people around the age of 20 who are self-aware that they are getting fomo'ed, but admits that they can't control themselves cause they "NEED" to get the new character anyway regardless of how good their accounts already are. Fast-foward a week after the banner ends, they start regretting it cause they don't have money that day/week or that they dented their savings for something they needed. Rinse & repeat every new character. It is wild for me to see this downward spiral in person to people I know. None of my advice stuck, and every time I remind them it's like their brain cancels it out cause of pure FOMO for the new character. It just goes "Haha okay, anyway, Mavuika can hit 700k damage or up to 1M! I can one-shot this weekly boss!" (that they can just easily beat already anyway, as if killing it faster would give them more mats) They also just shrugged off the FTC lawsuit when I showed it to them as evidence that they're getting fleeced.
Honestly, I can understand both of them. In my time tho credit/debit cards were less prevalent, and as times were rough, I was made clear quite quickly that I will never get anything. Anything non-essential I got in childhood (toys, extra stationnery etc) was basically a gift from our relatives/friends or I was basically made to buy it myself with my own money (selling some shit on the streets etc). But nowadays the easy money makes people too relaxed and they don't analyze what they are doing. It's pretty unheard for for a country to impose a penalty on a company simply because they allow people to do that. It's basically protectionism simply because "Trump said China bad". __ However, there are some real issues which can force people to whale even if they are aware of the effects. Namely, competitiveness, endgame, powercreep etc. Peer pressure, unlike bad financial management, cannot be remedied right away. It cannot be prevented. You can teach your child that money are payed by blood and sweat. But you cannot teach other kids the same. And they will bully those who don't have expensive things. This is even more acute problem. They show one another those "basically pokemons" and try to outdo one another. In Abyss or even simply by showcasing builds. Obviously there's a bit of this childish pride in here. And it ain't gonna anywhere soon. Yes, theoretically kid can ignore more "successful" people in certain aspects, but then it can very seriously backfire. For example, I never felt the need to compete with anyone and understood that this usually was a trap. However, in my current life it made hard for me to ask for more and to advance in career field. So, basically, childhood is a vulnerable place and time. __ I believe China does it best. If we simply limit the exposition time, kids would find other ways to have fun and be not as attached to the virtuality. It is better than simply complicating payments for almost no reason except American customs imperialism.

I think some people are stuck in the mindset of 'if I complain or agree that it's bad, then I have to quit', and it controls them because they're so attached. You can enjoy something even if it's low quality, as long as the price you pay is worth it. When it becomes hypocritical is only when you start lining companies' pockets out of sentimentality- over-paying for low quality, thus devaluing quality work.
All the games (or anything else they want to do, like movies, series, whatever) that my kids want to play, I check first and even participate with them and make it very clear about in-app purchases, even so, I enabled the service to notify you when the child tries to make a purchase in these apps. But I agree that the system is very easy for children to make purchases in these apps.
I do think that parents should get into what their kids are doing. But prior to that THE COMPANY HAVE TO GIVE THW INFO has to put it there , make it easy for the parents to understand and put an age, a gatcha game should not be play by kid. Put a freaking age where they can think for themselves. And yeah, second to that, parents know what your kids are into. I bought a Switch lite for my kid Christmas. I'm not with him all the time. I know first hand how predatory the industry is right now. I had to explain to his mom what Live Service was. She isn't a gamer but he's highly interested and has a lot of fun with them. He wants to play popular games so he can talk about it with his friends about it. It is my responsibility to know what is in the market and what products he consumes. But there's only so much I can do. So at that point, I just had to set up 2 seperate email accounts and Nintendo accounts. I don't give him the card. I only put money directly into the Nintendo account, which asks everytime if you want to save the card.

Was a pain when gathering data for my dissertation on this issue which the FTC just gave me another chapter to write. Just hoping both Gacha and the app store make it clear there's Gacha mechanics and explain it either in the start screen or website/app store. Genshin and NIKKE shouldn't have the same age rating as each other.

I'm not going to lie, I got very angry, because they are pushing all blame away from parents. Good parents will blame the company, and so will bad parents. You can't just take a parents word alone, because they aren't always the best judge.

I thought we all understood that its a fundmentally predetory experience we deal with to play fun games.... like ive had to talk down my own grown adult freinds from making silly purchases in these games. If they were to post a video other than their content niche, their viewership immediately tanks when the decrease should have been minimal had the youtuber build up their channel around their persona instead. Hoyo is predatory but I don’t get why people seem to think that restricting your kids purchases is hard. It’s very easy. Even though my credit card is saved to my apple account, for example, I still need to input a password or use my Face ID to actually confirm the purchase. I don’t know how it is on other mobile platforms, but I would assume it’s about the same. Usually they always have some other confirmation mechanism. That way parents don’t actually need to monitor these things because a payment would not confirm without their knowledge.
That's the thing on Google Play i actually had a pop up telling me if i want any further transactions to be auto authorized without going into my bank app. And i feel like this happened to some parents and they kinda forgot that this setting sits on their account regardless of their phone. So, when they decided to give little Timmy a tablet and logged on to it, they also give full acces to the credit card on that tablet.

Most of the takes I've seen on this issue have been pretty bad. "I'm not a parent but I remember when I was a kid and..." Yeah bro, I'm sure you were a real angel, smart and strong and amazing and totally unable to be influenced by anything.
The big issue with this was the COPPA violation. This broke the law and that is an objective fact (the FTC would not make this up, and Hoyo would take them to court if it weren't true). I don't think if they'd have screwed up that badly on something so easily proven that we'd have gotten the rest of it, but hey if you're already going after a company why not go all-in?
The big outcome of this isn't the pocket change $20m fine. It's the changes the FTC is demanding for more transparency in gacha systems. This is a win for every player of all ages. The only reason we even have that details page that gives us the rates is because of previous rules being laid down years ago just like this. It was a combination of various government regulations and fear of even more regulation that we even have as much as we have now. Hard pity systems are necessary because of a Chinese law that it has to be possible to put a definite price the player can understand is the most it will cost to get something - companies have simply gone the route of making it as convoluted as possible (dark design) while technically complying.
and even after gov't regulations, these gacha companies are still trying to skirt around regulations to make purchasing these in-game goods as cryptic as possible.

The fact that doro has so many likes on his first tweet is insane. That is a huge amount of actual phukkin more-ons which is the target audience they're farming for those sick monthly revenues. The crazy thing is that kids are a small percentage of this and it's a lot of vulnerable normal people. Game is not only dishonest about its exploitive features, it's built on them. There's a huge difference between an "In app purchase" and "Gambling" too as tags. The first one guarantees something while the other is there to steal your money.

And how you shouldn't drink it? Most people know this but it's still there. It's called disclosure and being transparent even with common sense things like that. This is to disassociate it from what you're going to spend in real dollars and how much you'll need to calculate numbers (1600 primos vs 10 pulls).
I'd be less annoyed at doros dogwater take if the following where true. The game was hit with an +18 age rating because of the gambling, is disclosed on the app in several places and requires a confirmation with each and every purchase no matter what. It used actual dollar prices on ALL purchases. Then it'd be like a parent trying to get their kid into a bar + casino. If they got in despite that then the blame starts to shift you know? Not the case here as none of that is in place.

That is what I keep trying to explain to people. Gacha games should be regulated at the same level as casinos and online gambling at minimum: KYC, ID verification, and 21+ at minimum. My only compromise off the top of my head is to make the banners inaccessible without ID verification.
These games normalize and get kids addicted to gambling on a psychological level and take advantage of gamblers without deterrents that surround normal gambling. The FTC went after Fortnite in 2019 for similar child targeted gambling and this is an extension of that investigation that started years ago and before anyone brings up FIFA, the FTC prioritizes marketing to children when it comes to legal grey areas like when they went after flavored vapes back in the day.

As a kid I never had access to my parent’s credit/debit cards. And as an adult, I got very far in Genshin as a F2P. I didn’t start buying Welkin until the end of 2024.

Look, I do think that there should be some kind of policy that forces kids games with in app purchases to have some kind of parental control system to make sure that you are not one click away from letting your kid have unlimited access to your credit card, but when your kid asks you for money for their game is it really that hard to take 10-15mins of quality time with your kid to make sure you know where that money is going? is it that hard to uncheck the "save my credit card information" check box? is it that hard to keep your credit card away from your kids?

It's not just kids, I know people around the age of 20 who are self-aware that they are getting fomo'ed, but admits that they can't control themselves cause they "NEED" to get the new character anyway regardless of how good their accounts already are. Fast-foward a week after the banner ends, they start regretting it cause they don't have money that day/week or that they dented their savings for something they needed. Rinse & repeat every new character. It is wild for me to see this downward spiral in person to people I know. In my time tho credit/debit cards were less prevalent, and as times were rough, I was made clear quite quickly that I will never get anything. Anything non-essential I got in childhood (toys, extra stationnery etc) was basically a gift from our relatives/friends or I was basically made to buy it myself with my own money (selling some shit on the streets etc). But nowadays the easy money makes people too relaxed and they don't analyze what they are doing.
It's pretty unheard for for a country to impose a penalty on a company simply because they allow people to do that. It's basically protectionism simply because "Trump said China bad".

However, there are some real issues which can force people to whale even if they are aware of the effects. Namely, competitiveness, endgame, powercreep etc. Peer pressure, unlike bad financial management, cannot be remedied right away. It cannot be prevented. You can teach your child that money are payed by blood and sweat. But you cannot teach other kids the same. And they will bully those who don't have expensive things. This is even more acute problem. They show one another those "basically pokemons" and try to outdo one another. In Abyss or even simply by showcasing builds. Obviously there's a bit of this childish pride in here. And it ain't gonna anywhere soon. Yes, theoretically kid can ignore more "successful" people in certain aspects, but then it can very seriously backfire. For example, I never felt the need to compete with anyone and understood that this usually was a trap. However, in my current life it made hard for me to ask for more and to advance in career field.

It is also my opinion that you as an adult know how much you are spending regardless of how many currencies it goes through because you know how much you needed to buy and how much you ended up spending at the end of it all. People brag about how much they spent on a character or in total all the time. Also fomo is literally everywhere. Many games with no microtransactions or gambling mechanics have seasonal events or even just events that never get reruns or have their items become available again. Heck nothing in life is infinitely occurring. Gachas are not special in their employment of limited time events. Id even say its less fomo since most of them are not even mmos and are mostly single player experiences.

Doro's take was beyond stupid. Majority of the children who spent tons of their parents' money were doing it without the parents' knowledge. They were STEALING that money, and yet Doro wants to blame the parents who were completely unaware of what was happening until their bank notified them of the massive purchases. It isn't about the parents' lack of supervision or parental skills, it's about Gacha games(and CC's) giving younger adults and children the feeling of FOMO(or they just really like the character); even if that character or item gets a rerun, they don't know when that rerun will be, so they try to get the character/item before its gone because the game/CCs said that the item/character was "broken" and "needed" on the players account to be able to complete end games, etc.
The only problem with that FTC fine that I am wondering about is that if they do make changes to the predatory gacha, this could mean they may possibly add the character/item in the shop for a set price, so you wouldn't have to waste pulls/pity for them, BUT they would still be 100+ dollars. Saying its predatory and demanding that it should change wont solve anything. (They just post the rates and say here. You have a 3% chance but after 60 you increase it by 6 each pull. Same rules for gambling. The casino always have a 51% chance of always winning. Only difference is one is a pixel art other is cash prize subjective to taxes) The bigger issue is parent are entrusting their kids to make those decisions on their own. When it gets to those pages. You can enjoy something even if it's low quality, as long as the price you pay is worth it. When it becomes hypocritical is only when you start lining companies' pockets out of sentimentality- over-paying for low quality, thus devaluing quality work.
All the games (or anything else they want to do, like movies, series, whatever) that my kids want to play, I check first and even participate with them and make it very clear about in-app purchases, even so, I enabled the service to notify you when the child tries to make a purchase in these apps.
But I agree that the system is very easy for children to make purchases in these apps.

I do think that parents should get into what their kids are doing. But prior to that THE COMPANY HAVE TO GIVE THW INFO has to put it there , make it easy for the parents to understand and put an age, a gatcha game should not be play by kid. Put a freaking age where they can think for themselves. And yeah, second to that, parents know what your kids are into. (Not saying watch them 24/7 just know what are they into and how it works, teach them about fomo, about those awfully practices, why they do not need a character, etc etc, )
The thing is, if a parent is in a casino with their small child and they give them a quarter to pull on a slot machine is that the parent’s fault? Yes. However if a casino knows they are doing it and they ignore it, they can get in trouble for that. So if we recognize that if a Casino knows a child is gambling and does nothing they are culpable, why not a gacha game? Can you stop it 100%? No, but you can take steps to mitigate it.

I bought a Switch lite for my kid Christmas. I'm not with him all the time. I know first hand how predatory the industry is right now. I had to explain to his mom what Live Service was. She isn't a gamer but he's highly interested and has a lot of fun with them. He wants to play popular games so he can talk about it with his friends about it. It is my responsibility to know what is in the market and what products he consumes. But there's only so much I can do. So at that point, I just had to set up 2 seperate email accounts and Nintendo accounts. I don't give him the card. I only put money directly into the Nintendo account, which asks everytime if you want to save the card.
