19:57 To answer your question, it's heavily implied during a conversation between Wilhlem and the Red Testament that they were the ones who activated KOS-MOS. 51:30 On the subject of chaos' name being all lowercase, I think it's meant to contrast with KOS-MOS. The word “cosmos” comes from the Greek word “kosmos” which means “order" or "orderly arrangement”. So we have "chaos" in all lowercase and "ORDER" in all uppercase. It's safe to say that it's meant to indicate that the two are linked in some way, which... well, I suppose you'll get into that in the Episode 3 rumination ^_^
I got to say this brought back so many memories. I remember all the throwaway lines you mentioned, and I honestly didn't know the implications of those lines until watching this video. I would hate to be live in a society where you couldn't tell the difference between VR and being at an actual concert. I think Episode 1 is one of the best introductions to a series I've seen so far, and while we unfortunately didn't get the grand masterpiece that this series could have been it was still a great ride. Looking forward to your ruminations on the next two games.
She wakes up automatically due to Gnosis proximity, that's all. There's other things going on, but from a completely technical standpoint, she detected gnosis on an intercept route and auto booted as she was programmed to do, to protect Shion, as her primary directive.
whatever the circumstances internally may have been, the takeover of xenosaga following disc 1 of episode 2 is one of the greatest tragedies in fiction - you are spot on about the difference in tone and scope in the early series. i read the blog posts from soraya saga/kaori tanaka in 2005 after i finished episode 2 and felt it went totally off the rails, and sure enough, some kind of internal company issues were to blame the second half of episode 2 and episode 3 are very evidently written by completely different people who didn't grasp the subject matter. real and compelling psychologically developed characters like cherenkov are replaced by nonsensical religious mysticism, whereas, contrary to the series' reputation, episode 1 is predominantly a sci-fi piece in the tradition of classical science fiction with underlaying GNOSTIC elements. that is, gnostic, not christian - the misunderstanding on the part of the episode 3 writers is most apparent when you see the sudden appearance of bludgeon-like christian elements, where there was no utterance of that doctrine in episode 1 - everything including the final boss being allusions to or explorations of gnostic concepts it's as if they gathered in a room and said, "okay, this is a religious game right? sooo... jesus and stuff like that?" it's made further evident when you look at the in-game encyclopedia in episode 3, which allegedly was compiled in part from takahashi's original story notes, and observe how drastically it contradicts the game's actual plot. xeno could have been one for the ages, but whatever business complications, whether it was takahashi's propensity for going over-budget and over-time, or interference from executives, tragically prevented that from happening.
Well I will correct in that Mizrahi himself quotes lines directly from the bible in episode 1, not to mention Chaos being named Yeshua. So there were many elements from various ideologies, from Nietzsche to Jung, Christianity to Gnosticism, even the NATARAJA system comes from Hinduism. Also "Ye shall be as gods" is another line taken straight from the Christian bible.
I’ve only recently gone through the whole saga, including Xenogears(which is probably one of the best stories ever created in video games with a very fun and cool battle sustem), and while sometimes the battle gameplay of the Saga series can be cumbersome(especially in Ep.II) I absolutely love them. I love stories that weave Judao-Christian and mysticism concepts into the narrative and setting. It’s also very difficult to describe these games and how all the different philosophical, mystic, and religious concepts are used. Xenogears and Xenosaga are games that you just have experience. The story is well thought-out, unfortunately, there was always something happening during development that would diminish the vision of what the Creators/Directors/Writers were shooting for. Wether that be SquareSoft having an extremely strict deadline for Xenogears which necessitated the infamous 2nd Disc, or the Creator would allow some of the younger staff to flesh out a barebones outline what needed to happen within a particular episode only for it not be as well written as the prior games. The Xeno-series are probably some of the most underrated and shameful forgotten video games created. And it’s a travesty that the Creators weren’t able to have their original vision realized for both Gear with SquareSoft and Saga with Namco. Though because Saga is a spiritual-successor to Gears and covers most of what it would have been covered in the Xenogears sequels you could view them as a connected narrative. That doesn’t do them justice. That said, now that Nintendo own Monolith and are fully invested in Creator’s vision, we’ve now got the Xenoblade series and the creator’s able explore some of those concepts again but in a super subtle way to where if you’re not entirely familiar with the prior Xeno-series you’d never realize it, and they’re amazing games!(can’t wait to get my hands on Xenoblade 3!)
Although I read between the lines that you didn't think nearly as highly of Xenogears/saga as I do (it's literally my favorite game series and story of all time - reminding me in scope and complexity to Lord of the Rings, but with far more emotional punch) - I found such detailed rumination by someone else from a different viewpoint fascinating and enjoyable. I appreciate it, so left a like and comment!
Fun fact, it actually wasn't budget, but rather time that made Xenogears rushed. They only had 2 years, and were given many newer employees, so they had to waste time training people as well as developing the games.
She woke up because of Mary's consciousness -- her desire to protect Shion. Kos-mos says this is because of Vector's directive to protect Vector staff, but it is so she can protect Shion. She deceives and acts as if she doesn't have a will in 1 and 2.
Takahashi left square because they wouldn't let him realise his vision for the xenogears saga. They only cared about final fantasy and takahashi didn't like fantasy
I remember getting this game for Christmas as a child. I had no fucking clue what was happening but I remember the rpg systems being fun and awesome. Thank you for reminding me of this games existence lol
The Xeno series is my favorite video game series. Thank you for these ruminations on Xenosaga. I really enjoyed this particular one and agree on a lot of points that you brought up, especially the quality of the VO acting. I'll be honest and say I was disapointed with the Xenoblade rumination. It's the best RPG ever to me and I felt you glossed over a lot of great things about it in your video. But, hey! I understand we're all human and don't react the same on stuff and it's ok. Maybe I should do my own rumination... Back to Xenosaga, my favorite things about these games are the characters. I love these guys so much. When they show up in other games, I feel strongly compelled to get that game. I don't like Project X Zone, but I'm happy to have those. KOS-MOS and T-elos in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is so cool.
Thanks for this one. This is my favorite series of games. I know that's weird but it's true. I play through all three of them at least once a year. I've been waiting for this.
I spent so many hours playing and replaying all three Xenosaga games as they came out. At the time, I thought I came up with a unified explanation for everything within the Xenosaga universe, but I never could tie it back to Xenogears.
not to be an 'expert gamer' here, but xenosaga 1 is very beatable at nominal levels using only tactics, not even esoteric speedrun-type tricks, just intelligent use of your characters, even while vastly under-leveled from consistently avoiding enemies. the same is true even of the fan-made difficulty increase patch, so the base game is more than doable without anything close to 'grinding'. i consider the battles in this game among the best in the genre, owing to the excellence of the encounter design and the mechanics like boost, as well as the ingenious and pervasive event slot system. good shit
~ 20:00 : The way the scene is presented, it was my assumption that one of those black box modules left over from Kevin's time as the head of the project detected alien ghost gribblies' approach and then BAM all systems were locked in and proceeded to function autonomously, with no external input allowed, until the crisis has passed. Why would anyone include modules, hardware or software, one has no full knowledge of in a military killbot prototype I have no idea, but the widespread catastrophic lack of common sense among the cast is a separate issue. Why would anything that could fit in a humanoid chassis could outrange a spacefleet's battlegroup collective detection capabilities is a question that is begging for 'mechs fighting kaiju' genre comparisons. But it does have to be noted that said battlegroup was dangerously understaffed and undersupplied in outright violation of all safety precaution because somebody up the chain of command really wanted to get to the SOS they were sent to investigate before anybody else. Also, hyperspace storage and / or transfer in real time tech is a thing - they teleport missiles to smallcraft engaged in combat from storage some distance away on demand, ffs - so it could be just a matter of a tech leap. It could also be potentially one of the two times 'blue eyes' could make an appearance without either the characters or players being able to confirm it. (The other being the flashback of the previous catastrophic activation, during the scene where KOS-MOS stalls her murder spree and holds still when Shion lines up the shot that ends up taking her down.) Elly-looking ghost may or may not have been involved. This kind of thing is why I think they should've done more with the in-game database than they did. In the first game the dev team didn't shy away from writing down out-of-universe notes there, and this kind of scene could've used them. Like, an entry unlocked after the end of the game, to help make sense of things and keep it straight in one's head. XXX In regards to going over the top with characterisation, in my experience, it is a common writing trope in basically everything that trickles out of Japan's pop culture works to us on the outside of it these days. I have read some articles claiming it has to do with how their own theatre of masks presented characters back in the day, and thus influenced works of fiction that came after it. Regardless of the whys, I disagree on it being necessary to make characters interesting. In my experience, it catches the viewer's / reader's / player's attention, but in a negative way instead. May be useful to show an obvious antagonist in a situation, but feels waaaaaaaaay out of line in most examples I can think of, resulting in some kind of cardboard cutout violent serial murderer 'characters'. Curiously enough, whenever such characters show up later, in a vast majority of examples they get significantly toned down. Given enough screen time, they may even become believably human-like, at times even completely unrecognizable from their earlier introduction. With that in mind, I feel this is often a result of the authors not being sure if they could reuse the character in the future and trying to shove all their relative plotpoints into one scene to try to say what they wanted to say, but not having the ability to pace it properly due to real life limitations forcing limits on the work that have nothing to do with the creative process itself. XXX Margulis, whenever he's not doing his 'UZUUUUUKI!' routine, takes me as a surprisingly manipulative guy. He's not very good at it (that scene where he off-handedly mentions some of his underlings being ultimately expendable and then turns around and assures Pellegri that she is an exception in the same sentence is an example), but we are still shown several characters who followed him anyway. It's probably just bad writing, but if I were to not consider that, I'd probably say he is supposed to be charismatic. Persuading people not with logic, but his certainty and force of personality. Compared and contrasted to Wilhelm, who never seems to speak with any kind of passion at all. XXX I have to agree on the lower scale thing. The next two games blow things out of proportion too much, in my opinion. Can't blame xenosaga's development troubles either, all xeno games to date have this issue pop up in some way or another. It's like someone just has an itch to blow up half a galaxy for fun every once in awhile on the writing team.
God I hope the remaster rumors are true. I could cry. My whole childhood is coming back. Ff12, .hack, spyro, and now maybe xenosaga? JUST DO IT, BANDAI!
Almost all the games from my childhood have been released, but Xenosaga and the first .hack series are still the holdouts. I hope the rumors are true as well, and I hope Bandai Namco's release of .hack//G.U. and Tales of Vesperia on current consoles is a good sign this one will happen as well.
Awesome rumination Lore! Managed to listen in while at my job. Kinda surprised the no music in like 80 percent of the over world screens didn't get mentioned :p It's kinda eerie watching a speed run when you just hear *tap*tap*tap*tap*skip cutscene*tap*tap*tap*tap. Also you need to do a Shion says "It's nothing" or "I'm fine" counter although you'd probably break it so never mind... This is probably one of the only game series you've recently ruminated that I've actually played through! (I seriously need to play more games ;_;) Interested to hear your thoughts on a certain "plot twist" in 3.
OddlyBrewed It was an oddly quiet game wasn't it? On one hand I think it kind of added to the atmosphere, but definitly made parts of the game more dull than they should have been.
I may sound biased, but I honestly don't think I am. You seem like the only dude (besides Takahashi) who can do a proper rumination/analysis on Xenogears in its entirety. Other people who have done Gears are normally pretty clueless about religious symbolism and don't exactly know what they're talking about. Growing up as a Christian, I only understood it to an extent but not well enough to understand it completely. I think you are perfect for Gears. May we get one please?
The POV character was supposed to be that woman, not Alan, and that's good, I'm tired of Alan-likes all over Japanese games, and it's refreshing that he's just a comic relief rather than someone we're forced to identify with, haha. Too bad I'm watching this years after playing the game, I can't even remember who "Margulus" is :( And here I thought that the Xenosaga games have been etched forever into my memory...
Kikis Delivery Service. Funny, the next Ghibli film after that was Only Yesterday. Which is probably the least dramatic or maybe "heightened reality" anime Ive ever seen. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on an anime movie like that.
I found Episode 2 very boring, but it's been a long time since I played it. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. It's clear that when writing the series they were expecting to have more games to spread the plot out, because Episode 2's plot moves at a snail's pace, and then Episode 3 moves extremely quickly to make up for all the time they wasted dicking around in episode 2.

What I found strange is that they completely removed Cherenkov from the Movie version of Episode 1... (the movie that game with a pre-order of Ep II)
Takahashi left square because they wouldn't let him realise his vision for the xenogears saga. They only cared about final fantasy and takahashi didn't like fantasy
Xenogears also didn't sell well enough for SE's standards.
What a dang shame... Xenogears is my favorite story of all time.
Yeah Takahashi grew tired of that franchise.
Excellent and well thought-out analysis

Just found your channel. I love the insight. Thank you.

waiting for Square Enix to take that engine from FFVII and remake Xenogears with Takahashi and Tanaka co directing and producing.

I agree 100% that grind should not be intentionally included as a design choice in a game. It's so frustrating when that's the case.
I thiiiink Kos-Mos wakes up because she senses the gnosis, I'm not very sure though, thats just what I remember thinking back in the day.

When Cherenkov had that vision that little girl called him garbage🤣🤣
Can anyone tell me how the character build works. Anything like Elder scrolls? Thanks!
This is a JRPG so there most likely isnt any characterbuilding.
SPOILERS: KOS-MOS wakes up by what is assumed to be Wilhelm calling Mary to awaken and go to save Shion (the will of Mary Magdalene)
Also chaos is lowercase because he's "the opposite of KOS-MOS" he's the Anima, she's the Animus, so it makes sense
This was awesome.

Make a XENOGEARS Rumination
Nice suit
Of course the part of the game Lore like would be the parts where people talk for hours about nerd stuff. =P
German title ^^
This game seems like the perfect example, on how terrible most jrpg's are IMO. The art style, the dialogues, grindy asian mechanics.. SMT ftw btw.
Thank heavens I am not alone in my disdain for the genre.
