I really enjoyed these games when they came out and played all 3. I was really disappointed though that they cut short the series though. As I recall, it was supposed to be six games but poor sales resulted in only three...

The Xenosaga series was originally supposed to be 6 episodes long. The creator has said he'd be willing to make those forgotten episodes if the funds were there. I think we should start mailing him our paychecks. I sure as Hell would love to see Shion and the gang show up on Lost Jerusalem one day.
I am an avid fan of the Xeno series from its perception. I love them as much as i love the main Shin Megami Tensei series and for those that know me that is saying something. However as much as i adore Xenosaga i believe the entry of Xenoblade Chronicles X is the best in the series by far. To me, XCX represents what the Xeno series is all about the best way possible. That being said, i would not be against the idea of properly seeing the other 3 parts of the Xenosaga universe to tie in Xenogears as well which in turn i also believe a good remake is in order but will never happen.

Yea me to man these games are live as hell awesome rpgs. They were just as good as gears to me but in a different way I love gears and it's my favorite game of all time but there are some things about saga I like too.
There's very little genuine religious meanings. It's all perverted out of context. My guess is thanks to a great deal of magic mushrooms consumed by Takahashi LOL.
Being able to recap this series but focus on the points in the plot that really matter takes great focus as there is so much to get side tracked on or that any fan would find very hard not to overexplain as there is so much there to get held up on. That said you did a fantastic job here. If there ever needed to be a pitch made to take this series up and convert it into a TV show this would be it as it explains just enough of the plot, characters, motivations and lore in a simple enough way that studio execs might actually bite. Say to little and there's not enough there there, but say too much and they get tired of listening to you and move on. All I'm really saying is doing what you did here took talent. As someone who has to produce and give executives summaries to corporate executives for a living I can truly say not many can do what you did here. Kudos to you man!
I'm making a whole more series in which I tell the story of xenosaga in chronological order. Meaning I start waaaaay back in ancient times and cover everything from jesus's time to the miltian conflict before I even touch the story of the games :P. I'm glad to see more people talking about this game. I'm glad I'm not alone
I couldn't help but laugh at the Cherenkov guy killing everybody lol. When you play it, it's kinda sad, kinda serious, but hearing it all at once is so ludicrous it's funny
I love how Sherry Lynn (Sasami Jurai) did the voice of Momo. I never had this game, but a good friend of mine back in the day did. Outstanding at best, and I liked the idea of using Mechs in battle. Thanks for the memories, recap/upload
It was an extremely cool recap! Actually just so you know the Zohar is actually a word in Hebrew that literally means Illumination or the light. Also fun fact the strange letters you all see on the monolith and the commander face are Hebrew letters ❤️
Thanks so much for this. Played this back on release and finally decided to continue onto the second game and beyond. Problem now, I didn't remember a single thing about the story. It was either replay the entire game again, watch the 7 hour long cutscene compilation here on YT, or watch your 30 minute recap. Already have way too many games on the backlog, all the way from SNES to modern games, mostly stupidly long RPGS. The answer was very clear. Thanks again.

I wish I could play that game. I rented the one for the ps2 and never finished it. Recently I've tried playing it on a ps2 emulator but it runs like shit.

Thank god for this video, I resumed playing the series from Episode 2 and had a hard time remembering what happened in this episode. I'll be looking forward to the next part. Seventeen years later this game is still remembered which makes me so glad some stories don't just die to time.
Loved this game so much! I can't tell you how many times I have played this game. My only regret was never being able to play the 3rd ep. I hope they remaster this game. Xenosaga deserves a remaster, like right now.

A seriously under rated game. I remember back when Marvel Vs Capcom 3 was originally announced KOS-MOS was supposed to be one of the playable fighters, however the game ended up being delayed for several years and by the time they got back to making it people had more or less forgotten about the Xenosaga series and her character ended up getting removed from the roster.
Weird. Because KOS-MOS isn't a Capcom or Marvel character; game was made by Monolith and published by Namco, which is why she shows up in the Capcom/Namco crossover RPG series whose name escapes me, and kinda sorta appears as a fighter in a _Soul Caliber_ game... three I think?

This is awesome, thanks for recapping. I love this trilogy to death. As a whole it's likely either 1 or 2 all time for me, along with FF7 (PS1). The scope of the story and universe in Xenosaga is beyond ambitious, with incredibly memorable characters. I'm finally going to wrap up Xenosaga 3 on my current playthrough, despite starting it so many moons ago. I really appreciate your recaps of 1 and 2. Like I said, I never actually finished Episode 3, but got near the end. My disc kept locking up on me. The same happened to FF7, just at Sephiroth. I've managed to avoid spoilers for how things ultimately end in both, which is astonishing for FF7. Xeno 3 is less popular, so that was easier. I've restarted both games numerous times through emulation, and played FF7 on other devices, but could never bring myself to finish them, as I didn't want the story to end. Jumping between my Steam Deck and PC, I'm finally going to play Xeno 3 to completion, while skipping 1 and 2. The actually game play/design in 1 and 2 are not friendly. It was always the story and characters that pushed me on. Episode 3 perfected so many aspects, as they finally matched the quality of the gameplay with the story. I love how the camera sweeps with character movements, it's just a slick presentation all around.
Hopefully this series gets ported to either PlayStation or Steam/GOG. Even just a PC port would be nice if people are able to make some nice mods and fixes for it.

A series like Xenosaga would never be made today. HD game development made it so a series like Xenosaga would have to be a AAA project, and simply would just never be given the resources it would need. For all the graphical advancements we got with the PS3/360 generation, we lots tons of potentially great games. Atlus's output alone from PS2 to PS3 dropped off a cliff

Knowing that the series was supposed to be 6 games long is hilarious when you remember that they didn't have enough ideas to fill out 2 discs for Xenogears. Different people, but still.
No, it‘s the same Team but under a different company. Also Xenogears wasn‘t stretched to fit 2 Discs, it was actually unfinished during the 2nd Disc because of a set release window where the Game had to be finished, so they rushed Disc 2 to tell the full story and not end it with Disc 1 on a cliffhanger (a decision that was probably for the best)
Thank you for doing this one! This was probably my most beloved RPG during my college days. There's SOOOO much going on in these games that I was disappointed when the series got cut short. Is there any chance you could do a retrospective on the trilogy once the RECAPitations are in the books? Tying together all of the various themes from throughout the games, as well as the foreshadowing, is what makes this trilogy so compelling.

Just being able to watch this was like playing the game again for me just without having to get past that one spot on the Woglinde where you have to sneak around the gnosis with just shion…*shudder*. Hardest gameplay of the entire game was in the first 3 hours. Instead of a full-blown retrospective, you could also try to summarize some of the major character arcs throughout the series. Namely, Shion, Kos-mos, Wilhelm and the Testaments, U-Do. Playing off that, the different role and cosmic philosophies of the various organizations, such as the galactic federation, U-TIC, Vector, The Kukei Foundation, and I know I'm forgetting some from the 2nd and third game. Been watching your videos for years. Absolutely love your work.
One of my favorite games of all time. Some of the hardest bosses I ever fought in my life are in this game. The toughest battles had to be between the double boss battle (Albedo + Blue cloaked man) and the double boss in the city after saving all those civilians

I've restarted both games numerous times through emulation, and played FF7 on other devices, but could never bring myself to finish them, as I didn't want the story to end.
Jumping between my Steam Deck and PC, I'm finally going to play Xeno 3 to completion, while skipping 1 and 2. The actually game play/design in 1 and 2 are not friendly. It was always the story and characters that pushed me on. Episode 3 perfected so many aspects, as they finally matched the quality of the gameplay with the story. I love how the camera sweeps with character movements, it's just a slick presentation all around.

Hopefully this series gets ported to either PlayStation or Steam/GOG. Even just a PC port would be nice if people are able to make some nice mods and fixes for it.

A series like Xenosaga would never be made today. HD game development made it so a series like Xenosaga would have to be a AAA project, and simply would just never be given the resources it would need. For all the graphical advancements we got with the PS3/360 generation, we lots tons of potentially great games. Atlus's output alone from PS2 to PS3 dropped off a cliff

Knowing that the series was supposed to be 6 games long is hilarious when you remember that they didn't have enough ideas to fill out 2 discs for Xenogears. Different people, but still.
No, it‘s the same Team but under a different company.
Also Xenogears wasn‘t stretched to fit 2 Discs, it was actually unfinished during the 2nd Disc because of a set release window where the Game had to be finished, so they rushed Disc 2 to tell the full story and not end it with Disc 1 on a cliffhanger (a decision that was probably for the best)
Thank you for doing this one! This was probably my most beloved RPG during my college days. There's SOOOO much going on in these games that I was disappointed when the series got cut short.
Is there any chance you could do a retrospective on the trilogy once the RECAPitations are in the books? Tying together all of the various themes from throughout the games, as well as the foreshadowing, is what makes this trilogy so compelling.
That's a great suggestion, but I'll be honest... I don't have faith in myself to make a proper retrospective for the fans.

Just being able to watch this was like playing the game again for me just without having to get past that one spot on the Woglinde where you have to sneak around the gnosis with just shion…*shudder*. Hardest gameplay of the entire game was in the first 3 hours.
Instead of a full-blown retrospective, you could also try to summarize some of the major character arcs throughout the series. Namely, Shion, Kos-mos, Wilhelm and the Testaments, U-Do. Playing off that, the different role and cosmic philosophies of the various organizations, such as the galactic federation, U-TIC, Vector, The Kukei Foundation, and I know I'm forgetting some from the 2nd and third game.

One of my favorite games of all time. Some of the hardest bosses I ever fought in my life are in this game. The toughest battles had to be between the double boss battle (Albedo + Blue cloaked man) and the double boss in the city after saving all those civilians
