- The greatest finish to a World Superbike race, along with Phillip Island '99 and Assen '96. Two fiercely competitive riders on one of the world's best tracks.
The usual enthusiastic commentary from Keith Huewen and Julian Ryder.
Huewen and Ryder best commentary team in the history of sports
Simply the best time if you were a biker and followed WSB like the millions of people in the U.K.
Keith n Jules just put the icing on the cake.
amen to that
The golden years of WSBK...Fogarty, Edwards, Chili, Haga, Corser, Yanagawa
Yep...one of the greatest races ever with one of the best announcers ever....that Aussie Guy...man he get's as excited as what you see live...and him and us watching ...blow our minds!!!
keith was such a legendary commentary for wsbk and motogp
instablaster.
Wasn't a bad pilot in his day either kid... 👍🏻
keith huewen and julian ryder are the best commentators.
I miss these old races... man, its so different now. Not as good as the ole days...LOL. Thanks for posting. Luv the commentators...
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST Racing in my lifetime was these years of WSB......
and also the two best commentators EVER. !
For sure! It WAS the best.
How old are u guys?
Grandpas?
I’d want the win if I were Edwards but if the only guy who can beat you is Foggy, you’ve accomplished more than most ever will
SBK would get better still when Bayliss and Edwards would go at it.
Foggy sure made for great races though.
Nick Harris is better imo
Fantastic racing, fantastic commentating
gare cosi si vedono solo in SBK!!!! gara stupenda!! e posso dire che c'ero anch'io a monza quel giorno!!!!
Simply the best WSBK race I have ever seen! King Carl!
This was the best and closest racing ever, what a fantastic time for Superbikes.
I was there and it was fantastic!
Edwards by 5/1000ths of a second!!! Wow...and then a few seconds later Foggy's the winner!!! Awesome, absolutely awesome! I watched this race LIVE and everytime I see this video, I get a panic attack....my heartbeat just races, but not quite as fast as these boys! Gotta love World Superbike!!! Foggy vs Edwards!!! WOW!!!
King Carl... Un grande...
Sky Sports were the only channel to show it, since they had a camera stationed in pit lane, but I'm afraid I don't have that.
I found this on the internet but I have a lot of old Superbike races on tape.
Remember it well.
The honda's always had the best top end from the other bikes.
Did not watch wsb after fogarty retired.
Same with senna dying did not watch f1 after that.
Moto gp been watching that regular for many decades.
Sheene, lawson, roberts, rainey,
schwantz, doohan, rossi, LEGENDS (:-)
Keith Huwen and Julian Ryder were the best broadcast team in motosport!
King Carl che pilota!! Ducati e Fogarty binomio perfetto!
Che ultimo giro spettacolare di King Carl!
"Easy!!" - Carl Fogarty, after seeing the official photo finish, which showed his bike a tire width in front.
Classic.
WSB best years
This should be an Olympic sport
This is classic! Gotta love these moments. I would like to upload old motoGP when Kenny Roberts JR being the champ but motoGP is so copyright minded and they will remove it. Glad we are able to view these vids that you've uploaded. Keep em' coming.
-just another fan of Kenny Roberts JR-
great great video! and great great foggy. simply the best.
Great footage, thanks for uploading!!!
fantastic racing
this is the best circuit in the world
La più bella superbike ♥️ grande Fogarty!
Este deporte es pura alegria
This was when the first chicane had still a good layout...
Ur right :s I dont get it either.. So Edwards did .005 seconds worth of distance MORE than Foggy? I'd say This race was rigged :\ Fogarty should have hung his transponder more to the front of his bike. Similar issue occured in the Belgian championship once. A bike finished ahead but was given second place, because he placed the transponder on the subframe while the winner placed it on the front fork. There was no discussion since both schould have covered an equal amount of race distance.
For this reason they go to visual photo finishes, nothing wrong with that. The problem is these bozo commentators don't explain that.
You mean Carl Fogarty!
Great race at one of the best racing circuits!
im willing to pay good money for old tapes in the 90's of wsb and motogp. sadly i have nothing on tape of that era as i was born in '86 still remember my dad screaming at the tv screen but cant remember the races. but he still rambles on about the greats of that time and even before that.
and as Keith Huewen said at the time "the Brits are going nuts here"
FFS, the commentator doesn't realize that they go to visual photo finishes when it's this close for that very reason ( where the transponder is placed on the bike)?
the computer said "Texas tornado until the finish line"
I love sbk, and the modern guys are great, Rea a deserving champ etc...... but there was really something special about this particular era!
Edwards went on to MotoGP when Carl was still running people off the track.
And after 12 years and 196 races, many of which were on a factory bike, managed a grand total of 0 wins. Incidentally, he didn't go to MotoGp until after Foggy had retired and would only win his two WSB titles once Fogarty wasn't there to kick his arse.
@@calibrazxr750 You mean run people off the track... How many MotoGP wins did Fogarty have?
@@cnealmartin just as many as Edwards. How many WSB wins did Edwards have before Fogarty retired? How many did he have when he retired? Not one of the riders he raced against ever leveled that claim at Carl, you on the other hand, someone who never raced in the series, never raced against Carl, somehow thinks that you know more than all of those riders. Some of his passes might have been a bit tight, but no better or worse than any other rider on the grid with him.
@@calibrazxr750 Last I herd Carl was charging people to sign his name. Edwards is in TX on his ranch hosting teaching dirt track and street racing. You can actually walk up to Edwards shake his hand and have a beer and talk about anything. Carl is still the biggest ass hole snob even in retirement. He treated people like shit on the track and still dose off the track.
@@cnealmartin what he does off the track has nothing to do with what he did on it, which was to regularly use Edwards as his whipping boy. Carl used to and maybe still does, toured with Jamie Whitham talking with and meeting fans. Edwards was a decent rider, but one who had to wait for Carl to retire before he could win his titles and then who achieved the square root of fuck all for the next 12 years. He is known as King Carl, even today, Colin was the Texas tornado, basically nothing but a load of wind. Ask 100 bike fans to name a WSB rider from the nineties/early 2000's and 99 of them will name Foggy. Hell, ask them to name any WSB rider from the history of the sport and 97 of them will say it. Most people have forgotten Edwards was ever there, but Fogarty will forever be Mr Superbike.
Wonderful season for sbk and King Foggy wins !
The power of the Honda ... my ass !
4 cylinders 750 CC vs 2 cylinders 1000 CC.....
im just glad that i have had the honor of watching rossi win many titles. the tail end of gary mccoy's carear (drift king). and troy baylis vs haga in troy's last few years racing an epic duel was had through those years. gp and wsb is my religion, and Valentino Rossi is God, while Troy Bayliss is Jesus Christ.
10 years on and can anyone honestly say they can tell who came first?
King carl❤
the Texas tornado said "I win" until the final corner.
It’s all good, it’s not like he didn’t win a few races after this one.
Cant win em all
Because he's on a bike that is slower than everyone else's
THE SUZUKI IS A TL 1000R??
gonzalito1988 GSX-R750
@@bigdarbs19 wow Bro, i wrote this 11years ago... thank you, tl1000 was in sbk but i dont know the years...
@@gonzalito1988 Ha, yes, I did see it was 11 years ago, I wondered if you'd see it! World Super Bikes was at its best in this video, not quite the same today.
Foggy............ Legend :-)
Why the hell was the result changed? How did they manage to make a mistake like that? If i was Edwards, i would be fucking furious
As people might read this 13 years (… god I’m old) later the context: the commentators got it right with the joking reference to transponder locations! This was a literal photo finish and when they showed the image in the post race interviews there was a tyre width in it. Not a wheel… the tyre. The image they showed was a print out so I’m wondering if there was no easy way to put it into the broadcast mix as, well, that’d never happen… right?
@@smiddlehurst1 Thanks for the (late) reply!! So it was actually down to the transponder being in a different location in their bikes?! Incredible. Must have been amazing to watch at the time
@@howieboy62032914 Both races were pretty special that day but god knows what Foggy had in the tank for that last half lap. Pure anger I suspect. Another nice bit was they were interviewing Edwards and Foggy after the race and showed them the pic. The interview went something like:
Interviewer to Edwards: You came into this as a young man thinking this guy would hang his hat up, hasn't happened yet...
Edwards: yeah, old bastard keeps going don't he...
Foggy: It's like me and Raymond Roche isn't it? He's a world champion in the future... but not this year.
And both of them looked chilled out and relaxed, genuinely having fun with it. Racers who didn't like losing but when it was that close... well, such is life.
@@smiddlehurst1 Amazing!! Both were amusing guys in their own right, not to mention superb racers. Always surprised Edwards didn't make more of an impact in MotoGP
Late to the party, although I followed WSB since the start in 1988 when Fred Merkel won on the RC30, but if you pause as they are on the line it can be seen that Foggy just crossed the finish first. Great race and the 90's were the best of WSB. Ride safe.
from 3:52-4:00 survey says Carl Fogarty.
I gotta say neukirchner vs. haga 2008 was not to bad either
Edwards was destroyed after this race. Foggy was really unbeatable.
KÖNNER !!!!!!!!!!
Made gp racing look pedestrian at the time
you mean carl forgaty
Ducati Man 👍👍
I guess back when u can run off track to pass someone?
foggy foggy foggy foggy foggy foggy foggy forever sbk n1 gold times.
Poco pubblico ...😜💗✊
@lukebartolo yes foggy is winer I look thet od the shadow !!
BFD.... 10 years later Edwards is still out there, handing his Brit teammate his ass in GP's, and Spies is doing the same in WSBK.... meanwhile Foggy's miserably failed superbike team disappeared how many years ago? NEXT!
Go HAGA
@dinuguan5 10 Io years later and still not done nothing in GP's and will never hold a candle to Foggy in WSBK and if you knew anything about Foggy's team, you'd know the bike was a cheap heap of junk, that was so bad it didn't see the light of day out of production.
edwards why don't you win anymore!!
I think he was trying dont you ?
@luke4200 Be honest - the Foggy/Petronas team failed because 1) the bike was a piece of shit; 2) they hired development riders to race; and 3) Foggy is no team manager or businessman - he's a pure bred motorcycle racer.
And yes, Foggy stopped when he got hurt, but he wasn't going to beat CEIII on the SP1 anyways, not that year.
Nope during the development of the petronas bike the rules changed so 4 cylinder 1000cc bikes could race.
Petronas had developed an 900cc triple and that’s what the rules stated they could have before the rule change so they was always playing catch up.
Not foggys fault at all
MrAckers75 Ah, a Foggy fanboy here to redeem his honor. While it’s very convenient to blame displacement for the teams issues, and certainly that was part of the problem, it’s also disingenuous to ignore all the other causes. “Not Foggy’s fault at all” is bullshit.
Grumpy Old Man nope no fanboy at all lol I have met him and he’s a arrogant dick but facts are facts.
You can’t be competitive when your 100cc down on the competition with one less cyclinder.
The bike only produced about 130 bhp and all the others made between 140 and 155bhp
MrAckers75 Yet they made the podium more than once. Facts are facts, and the fact is that it is _never_ just one factor. F/P was a dumpster fire from day 1, and 100cc is a small portion of the total picture.
Stolen. Edwards, legend.
