Good picks again. Some of my favorites from 1978: Midnight Express, Force 10 From Navarone, Hooper, Wild Geese.

I haven't pulled the trigger on Deer Hunter yet. Body Snatchers is one I first watched a couple of years ago. That last scene still sticks with me.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers does have a great final scene and is a really good remake.

Days Of Heaven.. I think I have the Criterion copy along with my other Terence Malick films. Good call on "Coming Home" Rich ! The Deer Hunter is my #1 pick as well. Good job, guys !

I just found your videos after watching TCM and sat through "Looking for Mr Goodbar" because I had never seen it and it was very shocking and I'm glad I endured it since it was based on a true story, but never again-once was enough😳that ending! Whoa!
Anyway, I enjoy hearing your thoughts on the movies, especially the way you talk about how each one affected your lives. I'm 65 and grew up in the suburbs of St. Louis. My Thanks for sharing your knowledge and impressions with very amateur movie enthusiasts like me.

So many movies are like that for me...wonderful, powerful and yet I can't put myself emotionally thru the ringer for rewatches. Welcome to the channel...we enjoy the company for sure.

I have seen The Deer Hunter once at the theater and recently for this video. It is a brilliant film but I probably won't watch it again. Superman and Heaven Can Wait were ones I hated to leave out.

Wow I didn’t know there was so much love for The Deer Hunter. I get it there are some powerful scenes in that movie. Rich picked two Vietnam war movies on this list. Both are downers but have some great moments and performances. I’ve never been a big fan of Halloween or Animal House. I’ve never seen Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Days of Heaven. In fact I’m surprised by the Days of Heaven picks because I thought that movie was notorious for being a flop at the box office.
    1. Grease
    2. Heaven Can Wait
    3. The Buddy Holly Story
    4. Superman
    5. The Drunken Master

I think you are thinking of Heaven's Gate which was a big flop. Heaven Can Wait and Superman were serious considerations for me and Gary Busey does a great job as Buddy Holly.

Good Afternoon Gents. An interesting year for me, with Michael Cimino's 'The Deer Hunter' also in my No 1 spot. I don't watch many Vietnam movies but I found this one to be very powerful having a lasting impact on me. At No 2 it's John Carpenter's 'Halloween', very effective horror unleashing a very popular franchise. For my No 3 it's George A. Romero's 'Dawn of The Dead' - very effective follow up to his 1968 classic. The European Cut emphasizes the action / horror element more and is worth a watch in contrast to both the US Theatrical Cut & The Director's Cut. My No 4 is Alan Parker's 'Midnight Express'. For No 5 it's 'Invasion of The Body Snatchers' - an effective remake of Don Siegel's 1956 original. Was nice to see Don Siegel have a cameo role in this film. I personally felt let down by its ending in contrast to how I felt with the 1956 version. Four other films that have stood with me from this year are: 'The Boys From Brazil' - not quite as good as 'Marathon Man' but still a good thriller. Michael Crichton's 'Coma' - enjoy this engaging thriller every time I see it. Brian De Palma's thriller 'The Fury', with Kirk Douglas and Andrew Stevens. 'Grey Lady Down', with Charlton Heston & Stacy Keach. Have a great night.

You mentioned three really good thrillers as your honorable mentions and I really wanted to include Coma on my list. I saw Midnight Express at the theater when it came out. I probably should revisit it.

@@RandyforRoyals My film selections are also challenging, for sure. Different films have different impacts on each of us and can leave lasting impressions, sometimes in the case of dramatizations even changing how we had previously viewed past real-life events. We all can takeaway something completely different.

Definitely a great year, but still some of the greatest films of 1978 are the ones most people have never seen:
"The Silent Partner" (Daryl Duke) is an exciting crime thriller with an amazing cast (Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer, Susannah York) which turns into a suspenseful fun game of identity switching! I wonder if "Daryl Duke" is one of Hitchcock's pseudonyms...
"The Shout" by Jerzy Skolimowski. A man claims his scream has supernatural powers. It's a "tale told by an idiot"??? Or maybe not?
I know you don't include documentaries in your annual lists, but I feel that "Gates of Heaven" deserves a mention. Errol Morris debut is about everyday people telling stories about their...deceased four-legged friends.
"Dawn of the Dead", "Body Snatchers" and "Superman" are the rest of my favorites!
And the two overrated films of 1978:
"The Deer Hunter". I only saw it once many years ago. Dull and depressing...
"Midnight Express". A pompous, intolerant film, this is what happens when two fake provocateurs (Parker and Stone) join forces...

The Shout sounds like Birdman ...but 70s style

Love Animal House. Double Secret Probation
I liked Heaven can Wait and Watership Down. Liked the Boys from Brazil and I thought the Donald Southerland Body Snatchers was a good remake. And Coma and Dawn of the Dead. Magic was super creepy. Liked Robert Mitchum with the Big Sleep.
    Force 10 from Navarone.
    The Wild Geese was good

@@masseysmaineentertainment Creepy Medical Drama. It was conspiracy medical drama where rich people were having young healthy people die during operations and then the organs are harvested. My main memory from this movie is genevive bujold finding a room at the hospital where all the victims in induced comas were hung up and ready for use. Great movie if you have any phobia about going to the doctor or worse the hospital. Like Body Snatchers and the Boys from Brazil , very paranoid conspiracy movies. Watergate left people with the feeling that the powers that be liked to work things for themselves and out of sight of the rest of the world.
Another favourite of mine was Murder by Decree 1979 which had Christopher Plummer , James mason but also Donald Southerland AND Genevive Bujold in it.
