  • Maria Zaloumis went from being a specialised nurse in Australia to a very successful tomato farmer in her native Zambia. She now employs more than 70 people from local communities enabling them to send their kids to school.

    Very nice story. What comes to my mind is: why the workers work as employees in the tomatoes plantation? Before the lady came to plant tomatoes, didn’t they already grow the tomatoes? How is possible that the local community could not fill that gap in the market but the Maria could?

      It's $7500 not kwacha so change that to kwacha it's k157,500 yearly ,it's a lot

      Too little. Tomato growing is capital intensive....she would be broke by now. 1 hectare yield in tonnes? Prices too high in Zambia; all year round!

      The other thing to consider in her favor is I watched a video of a white farmer that moved to Tanzania and said he only had 10 hectares of tomatoes but he said that he gets tonnes of tomatoes out of it.
