  • Welcome to What If cars! In this series we are going to make alternative universe cars, based on my own fantasies or your request!
In this episode, we take a look at the sudden rise of artificial intelligence, or AI. The technology is able to creat images and text out of thin air. Can it help us design fictional cars? What will AI do for the car industry?

I think the really big thing for AI currently is how much inspiration it allows.
You can really throw things at the AI and it'll spit out, while usually garbage, really interesting ideas that could be applies to an actual design.

    • @robertnicholls9917
      @robertnicholls9917 Год назад +6

That's how I see AI currently. At the moment, it's not good at spitting out good form balanced with functional cues but it can inspire your process. In about 5 years AI might be more resolved but even then, I don't think it will be able to mimic the random abstractions designers fall into by exploiting happy accidents in an attempt to create good balance. A good designer will edit any AI generated piece or use it as a starting point but not for anything final. At best, you could use it to modify each iteration of a design to achieve a final resolution.
I think a lot of people who are lazy think it's a catch all tool. Those who understand design can see it's limitations, which will change drastically in 5 years if the approach is more than just an engineering problem.
As for now, it's just another tool, in my opinion, and doesn't make those who are dedicated to real design expertise obsolete. That's just a hoop dream to those who see everything under the guise of profit only. People with such mindsets will fail catastrophically, mark my words. I've already seen examples of it when it comes to writing.
There is a random abstraction that it can't currently imitate. But, to be fair, average consumers may not notice such minute design decisions, where millimeters matter.
Any company dumb enough to rely solely on AI at this point is setting themselves up for failure.

The real problem with this form of ai is when every car design office has been using it for say ten years; what images do you feed it - since all the existing models on the road were created by the same ai, potentially every design might devolve to a single common model.

I used to work in the fine art business. While doing that, I realised what makes people respond to any particular artwork (and the same thing can be said of any object in which styling is a component). It’s the spark of inspiration captured within it. Not the colour, or the utility, or the materials. It’s the element of humanity that created the work out of nothing and reaches beyond it to connect with the observer. It is the lack of that spark that consigns everything AI makes to being synthesised - derivative, not creative.

Your hood would arrive at you destination a few minutes before you would lol they had all kinds of jokes about that car and its hood. Best of the Mark Series in my opinion. Ours was that metallic avocado vegas green with a black hard vinyl top. Not a soft vinyl top. There is a difference. One felt like a soft toilet seat, and the other was like Batman Armor. My biggest concern with such a smart IA, is : how we humans will earn our livings? Will IA pay taxes high enough to provide salaries to humans left without a job? Will there be a human power left to forbid IA from enslaving us?

It all makes sense, and a very interesting video. But how have computers been used in vehicle design so far?

You can definitely feel the AI pulling cues heavily from existing imagery. It'll be fascinating to see how it goes about it in a few more generations of development once it can be more subtle about where it's drawing design inspiration from. Very cool, though.

hey did a video on using this with automation (suggestion for Ed maybe?) Using it as a design guide for automation has great results.

What I find interesting is that AI is a reflection of the thinking of the people that developed it. Ultimately, it's just a machine following rules, but it's the humans that send it in particular directions that they consider desirable.

The last Lincoln shown looks the most Lincoln of all.
The thing is that the concept car for the last Continental a lot more along those lines and came out a lot better than the production car did.
    All done without a/i.

When the printing press was invented, it uprooted the lives of many. But also paved way for newer jobs that were more specialised. We can probably see the same happen in the future

theres one thing it always succeeds at: the Chrysler revival. far better than the actual designers, or perhaps the cut down gimped reality the design became after it left the designer's hands. that 2000's Cordoba is brilliant.
