"Anishinaabemowin", also known more commonly as "Ojibwe" is an indigenous language spoken in the Great Lakes region of Canada and the USA. There are many dialects of Anishinaabemowin, but I particularly speak a combination of Manitoulin Island Ojibwe/Potawatomi/Odawa, and Lake of the Woods region Ojibwe. I am very proudly indigenous, and I was surrounded by this beautiful language for my whole life. I grew up on reserves, and am incredibly proud of my heritage, culture, and language. This beautiful language is absolutely inspiring and very eloquent. I encourage anybody interested to read up on the poetic nature of Ojibwe, and about our rich history here on Turtle Island. Gichi-miigwech.
Anyways I had this idea quite a while ago, and actually had the keyframes for this finished a few months ago. Figured I would do all the breakdowns and inbetweens to finish it off on-stream, and then do some colouring because I need to do that more lol
This is the full word for "apple pie" in the Ojibwe language.
mishiimini-baashkiminasigani-biitoosijigani-bakwezhigan
"mishiimin" is just "apple"
"baashkiminasigan" is the noun for "jam"; a nominalization of the verb "baashkiminasan" which means "to cook it into jam/preservatives"
"biitoosijigan" is the noun for "pie"; a nominalization of the verb "biitoosidoon" which means "to place it in between as a layer"
"bakwezhigan" is the noun for "bread"; a nominalization of the verb "bakwezhan" which means "to cut a piece off of"
Nominalizations are just nouns that are converted from verbs, which are incredibly common in Ojibwe. We describe actions, and then the description of that action gets converted into the object that the action creates. The nominalization final word part is "-igan", which can be seen in 3 of the words that describe a pie. It is similar to English nouns becoming verbs, for example the noun "inbetween" in animation slowly turning into the verb "inbetweening", which means "to draw inbetweens". It's just in the other direction, where describing an action in detail becomes the associated object created from that action.
Figured I should update the description with some important information on Anishinaabemowin/Ojibwe, since I've been getting a lot of comments asking about it. Gichi-miigwech.
I'm first like and reply 😎
Apple pie
:))
Cinder block pie
My mom's Ojibwe and she can say this as easy as actually saying Apple pie
so's Mayde, so it makes sense
In other words… it’s as easy as pie for her?
@@P8rioticPaxCl00n Wenipanendaagod dibishkoo go mishiimini-baashkiminasigani-biitoosijigani-bakwezhigan.
(it's as easy as apple pie)
@@olivius8891 That's not so easy to say.
Psst, that’s the joke
For anyone wondering,
Anishinaabe languages (the language family that Ojibway is a part of) have syllables used as concepts to bring words together rather then actual letters
They're very intricate and complex if you find languages interesting
I was forced to actually learn some of it in my old middle school due to me living in a reserve but it was actually kinda cool but I really don't remember how to say alot of the words but I do know a few
To put it in less confusing terms, those languages like to build words out of simpler words. This translation of apple pie is more literally "apple-internal-layered-bread".
@@k.k.9378 Explained it better then I did, nice Job
Ohh, sort of like how german makes compound words out of just about everything!
@@WowItsErin Yes but much with much longer words
natives trying to write blueberry pie only for it to be spelled “miinibaashkiminasiganibiitoosijiganibadagwiingweshiganibakwezhigan”
the real reason they preferred an oral history!
It’s funny when you learn that Horse in Cree is mistatim which means big dog
interestingly enough, that's also how they say horse in the Border Lakes and Red Lake dialects of Ojibwe. I think it's a loan-word from Cree that we adopted, like with "gookum/kookum" for grandmother.
I now live on the eastern/central side of Ontario, and the word for horse here is "bezhigoozhii" which was shorted from the original longer word "bebezhigooganzhii", which translates into "has a single nail to each hoof" or something like that
@@yukirolee80 Is that because they didn't know what a horse was until the Europeans bought them over?
@@Embattled5211 funny thing is, before the colonizers came, native people didn’t have writing. It was ALL oral. The writing was made by the colonizers.
Something about the way you speak Ojibwe is oddly soothing.
True
Yea
Although I respect your opinion, I disagree. Your opinion is still valid though and you can think whatever you want.
He does it well enough. Ojibwe is a pretty gutteral language.

RUclips comment sections trying not to be racist (it's impossible.)
Fuck that racism. You're animations, people, and language are beautiful. Love your content Mayde!
Nor should you have to say that, how people gonna react with hate against this? It's ridiculous, like look at the English language, we got Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia as the word to describe a fear of long words. Like go hate on that or sumthin idk just like chill. Or go eat some apple pie.
you're pretty epic, sorry you have to deal with horrible people

I sent this to my aunt who speaks ojibwe fluently, and helps run language camps for it, and she thought it was super funny

I think the format of animating it - and having each syllable of the word appear on the screen as it is pronounced - is a really engaging way to present learning new languages to a viewer. In other words, I love this video and Ojibwe is indeed a very beautiful language.
OMG IM OJIBWE TOO!! I’m so glad I found another Ojibwe artist!!!
That's actually impressive that you managed to say it without skipping a beat
I guess you could say that was easy as pie
you mean easy as biitoosijigani-bakwezhigan
no wonder your pfp is sans
I mean he literally IS ojibwe so i don't imagine it would be hard for him to say
See, it's stuff like this that makes it harder for me to want to learn my own native tongue, but one day i shall do it! This was wonderfully well done, amazing work Mayde! (To clarify, Ojibwe IS my native tongue)
I'm from Iraq and I'm struggling with a very similar situation with trying to speak asyrian after being an English speaker my whole life. Please do not give up!!! you'll get there soon, bless.

Best of luck my guy
I love how happy you sound when you say apple pie. Gives me the feels
He really said :D at the end
You know that feeling you get when you come across someone who is really good at something you have no experience in? Even though you don't know what it takes to do what they're doing, you can tell that they're really good at it? This is what I'm feel with Mayde. I have no animation exprience, but I can tell that they're really good at it.
oh, this is amazing! I don't know much about the language being spoken but it's awesome to see an indigenous person learning a language that contains so much culture.
it's also really good to see someone from a marginalized group of people connecting with their roots and having fun while also having awesome animation skills :)
all in all, keep up the incredible work you're doing wondrous things
Literally spent the past 2 hours trying to memorise this and i could never figure out why
A language lesson and beautiful animation wrapped up in one. 🤩
imagine forgetting the english words for apple pie and just using the name for it in ojibwe
"i love having miinibaashkiminasiganibiitoosijiganibadagwiingweshiganibakwezhigan for desert"

Apple pie :)
This was made during his livestream when he draw and animate his project to his channel. Pretty nice work as for the last clip at the final line
Nothing like finding another indigenous animator randomly on the internet >3> (btw I’m Oji-Cree :pp)
I remember seeing this video a while ago and I came back to watch again and I love it so much. I’m Ojibwe myself and it feels inspiring to see another Ojibwe person with over 100k subscribers. I plan to do online content as well and it gives me hope that I can also make something out of myself online. I’m currently already learning another language but once I’m fluent I plan to learn Ojibwe. I hope I get to be as good as you :)
I like how indigenous you sound while speaking ojibwa and then a normal voice for apple pie
That is cool to hear that people outside of Minnesota know what Ojibwe is
I was lucky enough to visit some Ojibwe monuments earlier this year, absolutely wonderful people with a wonderful language 😁
I'm sorry but just I have been rewatching this so many times the fluidness of the mouth and how the words roll is just mezmerizing.
Ah, spoken language. Complicated and diverse as all get-out. Really cool to see how different things are said in different tongues!
Thanks for the animation and cultural representation.
The way you speak is so relaxing. I could hear your voice for hours and not get tired of it.
That is some CRAZY difference. Interesting.
You never cease to make me smile. Now you make me learn! Hope you're well friend, always good to see your animations.
