Thank you, this was very helpful! It's nice to know there are opera singers out there that want to help young singers understand what it is really like to be an opera singer and answer our questions. Thank you again!
I loved this number! You're such an inspiration not only for singers-to-be, but also for an old Chorus singer like myself. I realize I didn't have enough nerve to put up with "hard sides" of opera career. I did a few minor productions and I was already fed up with always being on-road or solitude to deal with.... so decided to be a chorus singer with local friends close by. So thank you for this number and again, BRAVA for your courage, honesty and being such authentic!! Don't change yourself!
Thank you for this video. I never get bored watching, so please, go beyond 3, or 10 minutes or whatever the suggested length is! Your wisdom and kindness are so genuine. Looking forward to the videos and the mysterious, exciting events in the coming weeks!
Glad to have stumbled upon these videos. Watching this vid reminded me that A lot of people can sing opera, but you are Supposed to sing opera. Its easy to tell in the way you speak about the art and so candidly in one take. I've met Joyce in person (even did a show with her many years ago) and she is as friendly and genuine as she is in these vids. It is rare when such an awesome person is blended with such awesome talent.
I never managed this kind of life having got married (to the wrong one first) then singing & teaching locally, but it is so helpful to hear your insights because it makes me feel that, probably, I'm right where I should always have been now as a 62 yr old Singer & Teacher and with "L'Homme de ma vie" finally and I feel lucky. Thank you so much Joyce and Lots of Love from Christine in Devon GB
YAY! Joyce you are back! I'm a very social person, but I do value so much my time alone, for me living alone is the best thing ever. Thank you so much for yet another absolutely inspirational video and am so curious about what you're bringing the next few weeks! And don't worry, you can talk for a hundred hours on your videos and I'm sure we'll all watch and re watch them :D Wonderful to have you back here on RUclips :) Loads of love from Brasil!
What an incredible, warmhearted person Joyce DiDonato is in addition to being such a beautiful, virtuosic singer! Thank you so much for sharing this, Ms. DiDonato. Your words give me strength and determination to pursue my dream career, despite of what I foresee as possible obstacles! Once again, THANK YOU!
Never has someone answered this question better than you just did. I'm pursuing a career in stage management, and I could cry, you just put so many of my fears to rest and validated exactly what I've been feeling. Thank you so much, Joyce
This is a great video!!! one of the things my teacher, who was a freelance bass-trombonist in Chicago many years ago, instilled in my at a very young age was: you're on your own. From the practice room to the stage.. even when you have to work as a team, you still carry a big responsibility yourself. I really like the things you said about being authentic and real from the start... it is such an important thing that so many of us forget. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the video Joyce! I loved it, and no, it was not too long. You are such an inspiration, not only the best opera singer but also such an effective and powerful motivational speaker. We are flying to London to see you in La Donna del Lago in May. Can't wait to hear you live again. We were in awe after we saw you live at the Met in Maria Stuarda.
You are truly wonderful and amazing, Mrs. Didonato! 0 Dislikes! There probably is not another video on youtube with this many views that has 0 Dislikes. That says it all!
Hello Joyce, I love your videos, you are so kind to share with all your fans. I`m starting another studio night and it`s so inspired see all your passion (I'm a med student who loves music). Thank you. (Pamela, Chile)
Joyce, you're a rock star!! This video is SO true and so great for young artists to hear. Hopefully it will help with some of their upcoming decisions. I'd always thought that I was strange to actually like this lifestyle, so it's nice to have justification from others in the same situation that these fleeting, intimate relationships with colleagues are actually real friendships, and that it's ok to enjoy this life! ha! Keep up all your fantastic work!

You have such a beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing it with the world.
"lose interest" Are you kidding me?! You're the most inspiring person when it comes to these particular kind of videos! I would could watch these for hours. You could like, compress all your videos and make the virtual bible of opera singers haha! XD But truly, everything you say rings a bell and I think you are helping a lot of people in this way! Thanks!
I especially loved the part about 'having dinner alone' - that's exactly what IS unusual at the beginning, but if one looks around there are LOTS of people having dinner alone with their books... ;) and, after a while, it's fun. Thank you a lot for pointing this out!!
Joyce, You are so beautifully authentic! I am at the beginning of my career and your posts are so encouraging. I appreciate your ability to be vulnerable and tell us the ups AND downs of a life on the road. I am ready to embrace whatever crazy turns this life takes takes and be as brave, grateful, and honest as I can. Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice AND spirit with us!!
Thank so much for this video, even though I am watching this years after the fact! I did not think it was a moment too long and it provided some real insight for a non-singer. Love you ❤️
Oh wow that life actually sounds kinda perfect for me. I'm an introvert who likes to perform, haha a bit counterintuitive I suppose. I do enjoy interacting with others but I find I have to have a lot of alone time to recharge.
big sigh….much of my life has been what she speaks about here. Very high high's where everyone adulates you and maybe almost worships you for your talents and physical appearance and then….you are all alone, walking down a winding, wind swept street on a cold rainy night…fame is very fickle. At some point you must leave the pinnacle and make your way down into the black, depths of a deep nameless chasm as your career ebbs and drains away into nothingness….replacements have already taken your place. Along the way who are your real friends? Far and few between...
Thank you Joyce. You have no idea how nice is to be alone and yet not alone in our loneliness. From another "living the dream". xx
Great advice for anyone - professional singer or retail clerk, it doesn't matter - learning to be alone and using that time to nurture your soul.
Thank you, this was very helpful! It's nice to know there are opera singers out there that want to help young singers understand what it is really like to be an opera singer and answer our questions. Thank you again!
Thanks Joyce. Your words are healing!

Thank you so much! It was truly inspiring. I completely agree: you should only regret the things in life you didn't do.
What a very special person you are, Joyce. A great artist, sure, but more importantly and not unrelated to, a wonderful human. God bless you.

On the one hand this is sad, but inspiring too.. I have learned to be alone. I love you're attitude about this.
