  • Barnabas Collins the vampire is immortal. Barnabas Collins the character created by Jonathan Frid is immortal.
    Rex mortuus est; vivat rex.
    Note: This video consists of two parts. The music video portion is followed by a compelling scene between Barnabas and his father (scenes edited and combined from episodes 446 & 447. At 8:22 a vocal is imported from another scene to abridge the storytelling. The final scene as it appeared in the original series cut to Joshua's shocked expression; here I've edited the clip to remain on Barnabas's face).

    Even though Frankenstein’s Monster (Boris Karloff’s version) got me into the horror genre, Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid’s version, particularly during the soap opera’s 1970 Parallel Time storyline and House of Dark Shadows) made me absolutely love everything the horror genre had to offer during the golden age of Hollywood. Long live Dark Shadows 🎃

    Thank you for this Patricia, this is truly outstanding!! I grew up watching Dark Shadows, and til this day, I still have nightmares, about Barnabas Collins coming after me :P .. When Mr. Frid was alive, I posted that on his website, and I got a reply :D .. He thanked me for being a loyal fan of DS .. It fascinates me so much, how much Dark Shadows has in common, with "Brahm Stokers Dracula" Gary Oldman, who by the way, gave a stellar performance of Dracula!! He wanted to be reunited with his wife Elizabeta, who threw herself off the castle wall and died .. Barnabas, wanted to be reunited with Josette, who threw herself off of widows hill .. You know the rest of the story :))

    • @PatriciaArcana1
      @PatriciaArcana1  10 лет назад +5

      It surely must have been a different experience from a child's perspective, I can only imagine, and no laugh track as with The Munsters.
      How special to receive a reply from Mr. Frid! I got an autographed photo from him, personally inscribed to "Patricia." I'll always treasure it.
      It's conceivable that "Bram Stoker's Dracula" borrowed some ideas from DS. If Tim Burton was influenced by DS, I'm sure other producer/directors were too. After all, like you, they ran home from school to watch Dark Shadows. Thanks for the compliment, jamminjoe44, and taking the time to leave a comment. Please share and spread the word about the original Dark Shadows to the uninitiated. :[

      Can there be any doubt? Any hesitation? Any flirtation with the notion that any other actor of any generation could hold a candle to our magnificent Johnathan? It is, quite simply, and I might add - unequivocally, IMPOSSIBLE! There's no accolade sufficient. There are no comparisons. It is, after all is said and done, Frid and Frid alone who was able to give his monster infinite facets and incomprehensible dimensions! The entire series, the entire DS enterprise, was built on the solid as a rock foundation of this one man alone. He stands alone in the eternal spotlight! His performance is etched into the marble monuments of the immortals as surely as it is carved into the hearts and minds of all of us who have or ever will be fortunate enough to bask in the glory of his performance.

    Boy, how I love this scene of "Wm. F. Loomis (PT)", when he absent-mindedly forgets he's in the presence of something worse than a viper, while he's ambitiously distrated plagerizing in the vampire's remininces, hoping to produce his supposed next "best-seller", which will never happen! This scene harkens back to the original profile of Willie as an a convining, amoral, dumb and desparate opportunist-petty theif, before Barney turned him into the "Renfield"-like sniveling, frightened vassal to the former, who's only saving "grace" was his love of, and fear for the saftey of "Maggie Eavans". I suppose the 'cowardly vassal' was a 'step-up' for Willie
    Ah. Yessir; they don't write them like that anymore!!!

    I wasn't around when Dark Shadows was a hit since I was born in 2003, but my God, I could just melt into Barnabas's arms. No need for him to hypnotize me. Of course, he'd end up biting me, but I wouldn't fight it. He fed off of me in a dream I had around my 18th birthday. What happened was I was laying in bed, asleep, when I woke up in the dream, then there he was, standing over me in the dark. Barnabas stared at me for a moment before baring his fangs and biting my neck. I actually felt the pressure of his fangs where he bit me in the dream. The dream was almost like a scene from a Chistopher Lee "Dracula" movie.

    Boy, it seems that the theme of "Kill Barnabas", by his many would be enemies, friends, and lovers never seemed to get old on the series. But I do wonder how many times that the vampire had to chnge wardrobe, as his suits and coats were utterly ruined by bullet-holes, knive tearings, fire, etc. never mind the bloodstains on his suits and collar;
    ("Oh! So, Batnabas, [says any inserted "DK" paramour], you claim you were out all night 'drinkin' and carousin' with your friends, Bella, Vaney, Alnicard, and Quentin.
    If, so, then what is that red stain on your collar? And don't give me that crap that the hussy Anglique has joined your 'wine-sipping' buddy clique")!!!
    A little "Dark" humor for the countless "Shadow(y)" fans out there in the ether!!!

    I slept with a thick scarf round my neck during THOES days . We'd run from bus stop to watch them all. We were terrified but enthralled.

    Dark Shadows - Remarkable communication, it taught me a lot, and apparent true reflection of the real world's realism, and the natural stillness of the undead. Except for one thing, according to legend, the real vamp may find a mate with undivided love to get fixed up with, to give up the vamp's bloody ways perhaps permanently, and simply live as a normal human but with a more awaken state of being compared to common humans.

    Everyone wants to kill🔪him....
    It's so poor character in this story. He lost Josette, was cursed and never get rid of this...

      Guy liner started in the theater and carried over into silent and early films. It seems fitting that Jonathan, being foremost a stage actor, would wear theatrical makeup on the small screen.

    Wasn't it? Which is why it was selected for the climax of the music video portion. Barnabas is so nonchalant and the sparkle in his eye clinches it.

    Y'kow, the thing about actors is that they don't know how to parlay their strengths and opportunities. Take Johnny Frid. He claims to have "suffered" because of type-casting. Yet, as an actor, if he thought about it for one second, he could have used his resume on DK to, perhaps have a recurrring appearance on, say Rod Serling's "Night Gallery". I'm sure it would have played to the mutual benefit of both men. And with all the "horror" genre movie and especially TV then in the 1970s. Ah, well!!!

    • @11redlions
      @11redlions 6 лет назад +1

      If he actually claimed to have suffered from being typecast why in the world did he star in Devil's Daughter and Seizure? Although I know much later he enjoyed his one man shows.

    what is the name of the music you set this to?

    • @PatriciaArcana1
      @PatriciaArcana1  6 лет назад +2

      At 11:30 the credits list the music. First music is "Noctem Aeternus" by Nox Arcana; second music is the original music by Robert Cobert.

      Frid said; you don't remain friends with people in the acting business you move on, he said he's met hundreds of people but he wished he had stayed in touch with Robert Cobert and his wife.

    Hey, no fair. In the orignal scene, when ol' Nicolas Blair is summoned "home", Barnabas observed him being consumed in infernal fire. Barney's ear-to-ear glee has got to be one of the 'Top-Ten' scariest and carpiest (I can't use the idom for 'caliform') sneers in all pop-culure and horror, right up there with with Jack ("here's Johnny") Nicholson, and Wesneday Addams (that Wednesday Addams glee), in the second Addams Family movie!
    A video should be made about the the scariest grins-leers, sneers-smiles of famous monsters!!!
