I bought the OpSix expecting to get an FM synth with nice physical controls, and was pretty delighted to discover that’s it’s so much more than that… really more of an open-ended playground for modulating operators against each other in different ways. And for lush 80s style pads it sounds absolutely incredible.
The modwave is my favorite. I really liked the demonstration of it. The patches were also well chosen for the demonstration and it just sounded very good to me. I can see the depth of sound programming capabilities of the instrument.
Thanks for this very good comparison! Well i'm closer and closer to buying Modwave :) This is my taste and my need but i can see (and hear) all three synths are very good and full of possibilities.
Some of the comments below are really crazy, this isn't Apple vs Samsung or Wavestate vs Modwave as rivals, eg the comment that the Modwave also has the sample import cos the Wavestate has, is really obvious, as Modwave came out after the Wavestate, and at least they added it. They are part of a fantastic KORG line up during a very difficult time in the world's history (COVID19 bs). I have had my WAVESTATE for 5 months now and I really luv it. I'm really gratefull that I got my hands on one, and KORG had listened to us the customers when they released version 2.0, the difference has really opened up it's vast capabilities. Pick the one or more that suit you or not. If I was in the market for a second one, it would be the Modwave, but I really am happy with my choice. They are all great in my opinion, plus the keyboard feels fine to me.
For whatever reason Korg don't make a lot of modules. These are great synths but not only do they have keys, they have full-size keys, which is not very space-friendly. Would love module versions of all three of these.
not plastic solid but not same .....i got also O1W FD and M1 before this one both sold cos finally was wavestation at this period for me but i did a mistake ....
Still have my 01/W FD and still use it in my mix...My screen is the same but its no biggie to shine a torch on the screen to select my patches as I use it only at home...The floppy drive still works fine in it.
@@cyrillusventus1 Very different type of synth...the virus ti2 sounds beautiful..very expensive.. but the wavesstate is a different beast..they are both good.. in their own way
MODULES! Please, Korg, give us modules for these awesome machines. For whatever reason you always do key versions, which is great, but some of us have controllers and/or don't have a lot of space!
I wish for the moDWave to be updated to utilize the oscillator knobs in sample mode. In sample mode currently, the knobs have no purpose. It would be cool to be able to manipulate regular sample playback pointer, perhaps with some form of playback pointer interpolation when moving the position knob, and maybe make the blend knob a second playback pointer offset from the regular position pointer, and the morph knob could 'morph' between the two pointers. Just thinking out loud. :)
Korg please build some modules of these? Do this and I’m down for the Modwave and Wavestate. I don’t want and can’t fit a three octave keyboard in my setup.
I want to get an Opsix, but seeing the Wavestate and Modwave is leaving me undecided. Which is the best out of the three for producing the dreamiest pad sounds?
Depends on your dreams :) - if you are into 80's nostalgia then Opsix is your friend. But if you played with Kaossilator pads and Wavestation before then Modwave is a gift from gods of synthesis. It can EVOLVE sounds like nothing else here. It makes Wavestate sound almost "industrial" by comparison. I had a thought: if someone had put Native Instruments into a light keyboard edition - then you'd have Modwave :D We all have biases, and mine are often revolving around Korgs (7 Electribes, 6 Kaossilators and KPads, 01/W, Wavestation SR, R3, T1 (although dead atm) recently Volca FM and Monologue) but now that the local shops got new shipments it's definitely Modwave on the horizon for me.
the Z1 by far!!!!!! :) as far as oscillators go, i find the standards boring. the most interesting to me are multidimensional, eg. 3d oscillators affected by several geometric parameters for several degrees of variance. i used simple models for angle vst and black vst, they may not be commercial because the results aren't always predictable, but afterwards, who can go back to PCM/AM/FM/PM et c.. the sounds are beyond such static methods.
You can't compare the DSS-1 to a 3-octave keyboard. The DSS-1 is a very high-end instrument. These 3-octave things are entry level. I could only look seriously at these if they had a form factor of the the most important synthesizer in my view: the DX7.
i have a wavestate. i will not buy any more synths in this form factor. the keyboard is cheap and will eventually break, especially since velocity is an important performance parameter. the keybed is also a waste of space regarding a performance setup. I would recommend making all these synths as modules. I would like to see a special controller keyboard with big touchscreen(s) that can run the editor software for all the synth modules and knows all the midi/sysex info of all the synth modules. i have a kromeEX and an x50 and the whole combi/16 layer thing is great. i use the combi to control external synths. splitting the keyboard and muting parts on the touchscreen mixer is great. korg has all the pieces. please integrate them next.
Radias. It has an input. Make a Wavetable version of the Radias. I have the Modwave and the user experience is absolutely terrible. I mean why on earth would the keyboard bring up the utility screen EVERY time I press the Octave +/- button. There's no option to change that behavior. Completely ridiculous. The Modwave also shipped from factory with OS errors. Out of the box it requires an update to be functional. The extremely poor selection effects offer no variety. The effects are far from any degree of what I consider quality. I wasn't at all impressed with the presets given the capabilities of the machine. It's a decent tone generator but not worth $799. At the end of the day it's just a Raspberry Pi with knobs and you can tell when you turn it on. I only say that cause although I already knew the hardware was going to purposefully built to be cheap beforehand, I was highly disappointed to see the CPU usage at 12% at idle on an initialized program playing no sound. Even had CPU temperature on the same menu LMFAO! Seriously? You'll get much better results with software because these companies continuously put out incomplete and/or cheap synthesizer designs which cannot complete with what most people already have access to within their PCs, and now iDevices. The Wavestate, OpSix, and Modwave all should retail for $299, and should've been combined into one unit.
The Opsix is my favorite of the 3. And I really appreciate the v2.0 update with the Comb Filter. Thank you Korg.
Korg nailing it again! Amazing little synths...

but too complicated to use so yep modwave and with the kaos so useful
I miss the keybed on the Prologue though. A lovely action.

こんにちは. So much waiting for SE Wavestate and Drumlogue. 🙏❤️
This was an easy choice for me...WAVESTATE HANDS DOWN as the most unique synth of the three.
Thank you for the explanation and demonstration of the differences. Hopefully there will be desktop modules soon.

I was sure the Opsix is the one I want, but hearing the Modwave wow now I don’t know :)

Korg 01/w - had mine for 30'ish years still working great. altho it does need the screen replaced. (doesn't light up any more)

The Opsix can create some great pads, closely followed by the Modwave.

For the best pad sounds you cant beat a wavestate simple as that.

Looking forward to the upcoming 61 key version.

1. Minilogue XD, 2. Modwave, 3. Opsix, 4. Wavestate.
Wavestate is the undisputed king, especially after the latest firmware update 2.0 that allows user sample import.
