    No doubt that this is the most problematic movie of Cruise's career. After everything that he worked for with a delay of 2 years; in the end his movie is released in IMAX for 1 week only.
    Cruise had every right to be furious.

    • @EdmundSnow98
      @EdmundSnow98 Год назад +17

      He could have released the movie at a different time, and definitely, after removing the expanded ratio, he made the film basically unnecessary on IMAX screens. Who knows, maybe that made a difference at the box office, with people telling their friends that the IMAX screenings don't have expanded ratios and they should see it in a different (less expensive) format instead.

    • @HEAVYHEARTSMUSIC
      @HEAVYHEARTSMUSIC Год назад +44

      @@EdmundSnow98 The vast majority of general audiences go to Imax simply because it's called Imax, and have no idea about aspect ratios, even less so which films feature expanded ratios. But clearly from Maverick's performance, his films are very successful in Imax theaters, so I get why he would've been upset.

    • @damonappel
      @damonappel Год назад +4

      @@EdmundSnow98I've seen MI7 in both IMAX and ScreenX. Just like with Top Gun: Maverick, it seems like you may prefer the format you first watch it in, more.
      Last year, I saw Maverick in ScreenX (first-ever ScreenX viewing), and I was astounded by the movie in that format. I later saw it in IMAX, and it just didn't "do it" as much for me. To this day, I prefer seeing it in ScreenX and will probably rush to see it again if they do a limited release or "ScreenX festival" (like they had in April this year).
      This year, I saw MI7 in IMAX twice, with the first showing on the preview night in the perfect, close & center seat of my local IMAX theater. The sound and image was so engaging. I saw it this weekend in ScreenX and it took me an hour or so to get accustomed to the loss of the spectacular sound of the IMAX theaters. The side screens engaged in all of the points you'd expect, except it was not in use for the airport scene or (oddly) just a few mins of the yellow car scene. I think I'd still prefer IMAX for the premium sound, although the car chase and the train were fantastic with the side screens.
      If ScreenX theaters had premium sound to go along with the format, they'd give IMAX a real run for their money. But, Cinemark only has some in Texas, which I can't get to to audition, and Regal's implementation (the only one across the Nation) seems to be pretty bare bones other than the extra projectors. A real shame.

      Any premise can be made to look bad with rants like that. If you want to critique a movie or the people who act in it, you should come up with valid points. Something about Tom and Scientology or Alec Baldwin maybe? We should be able to critique movies for their positive and negative reasons rather than mock them, that’s the point of reviews and many video essays or documentaries. It’s why we watch them. The IMAX certified cameras (Sony Venice) etc do have 6K 2:3 open gate modes, but it's likely they only shot for 1.9:1. Since those sensors are not nearly as big and tall and IMAX film cameras any 1:43 presentations will also just be a crop on the left and right anyway. Keep that in mind.

As far as I'm aware, there are no 1.43:1 movies that were cropped, the only thing that comes to mind is one shot in Dune where the 2.40:1 version technically has more because they digitally extended the image. Other than that IMAX film stock is exactly 1.43:1 and even Dune used a digital camera with a 1.43 sensor.

Plenty of films are made using these cameras that are not released in IMAX (i.e. JOKER) because the filmmakers didn't make a deal to exhibit those films in IMAX theaters.
    Oppenheimer is truly filmed in IMAX, meaning that they were filmed using analogue 70mm cameras designed by IMAX themselves and used IMAX's proprietary analogue 70mm film.

    Hi. I have trouble understanding, why this Oppenheimer movie can't just be projected in all other/normal cinemas in the same aspect ratio as these special cinemas that project this IMAX 70 mm film. Why can't all cinemas just project it digitally in the same aspect ratio as Nolan intended - meaning in this more square format, closer to 4:3, or 1.43:1? Why not digitalize this 70 mm IMAX film - all the frames - in it's original aspect ratio, in a super digital resolution, and project it in every cinema in the world like that? If it is a matter of having Super Resolution on a big screen, than I can understand, that in original 70 mm IMAX film, with propper projector, it is noticeable. But for me, I would only want to see it in original aspect ratio. Just that. Aspect Ratio matters for me most. Resolution doesn't matter for me that much. Do you have any knowledge, if maybe ordinary IMAX cinemas will also project this movie in this original 1.43:1 aspect ratio? I understand that the resolution would not be that crisp as these 70 mm IMAX cinemas have (with their projectors), but do you have any knowledge if ordinary IMAX cinemas will also project this movie in the same aspect ratio as Nolan originally intended? This matters for me the most - original aspect ratio. I guess when there will be Blu-Ray or VOD release of Oppenheimer, we will be able to see digital version of this film in original aspect ratio 1.43:1 - like it was with Zack Snyder's version of Justice League for VOD. But why can't they do it now and play Oppenheimer like that in all cinemas in the world? I can't understand. If it's due to loosing resolution while digitalizing the movie - and they don't want that for big screen - then maybe they see it as a problem. But for me, not having super crisp resolution like 18k is not a problem. Having it like 4k is enough. I would more appreciate being able to see all image content in 1.43:1 than having it cropped. I can't understand why they won't do it now for all the cinemas. Why wait with this until VOD release or Blu-Ray release? Let's not forget, that the sound is also important. Thank you for this video. Please let me know.

And you can see the difference where that money went with this and Indy 5, although tbf those budgets don't always reflect the final picture as much as quarantine/delays costs. Still, some might say just becuz they worked hard for it doesn't mean it deserves more than other movies, and thats true, but if fucking Jurassic World Dominion and Super Mario Bros can make 1 billion, why the hell can't this movie? Yes! I just saw it on Wednesday and I went to IMAX just because I was so sure it's going to have those huge format moments that previous M:I had...and I really liked the movie on it's own but I have to admit I was bummed out when that immersive moment never came :(

    2.39 ratio is how 95 percent of modern films are shot. The IMAX screen is normally the largest screen in the Multiplex. 1.85 (1.90) is unsuitable for closeups of people in a dramatic scene does not work on a giant screen . The Anamorphic ratio allows a closeup but also has side information (like in real life) The IMAX ratio only works when it is used sparingly for scenes that are "big" not intimate. I have noticed that the same ignorant crowd who demand a full screen ratio are the same individuals who can not tell the difference between loud sound and good sound.

      Not correct. Nolan, Villeneuve, Chazelle along many others have all have stated the opposite of your statement.

    The promotion was so bad for this movie that I didn’t even know it already came out. I thought it was going to be released later this year 🤦🏼‍♂️
