ABOUT LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O’BRIEN
Running from 1993-2009, Late Night with Conan O’Brien is one of the most beloved late night shows in television history. Known for its absurdist humor, hilarious celebrity interviews and featuring the best stand-up comedians and musical acts of the ‘90s and early 2000s. Hosted by Conan O’Brien alongside sidekick Andy Richter and house band Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg 7, Late Night with Conan O’Brien featured unforgettable segments like “If They Mated”, “In the Year 2000”, “Desk Drive”, and made a breakout star of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
Capt Lovell is still alive, 95 years old. What a legend.
So is his Apollo 8 crew mates. Frank Borman is also 95. Bill Anders is 89.
Just within the past hour, I saw Marilyn Lovell’s obituary in the New York Times.
@@jv-ep2tcAh that's too bad. :( Poor guy, lost his copilot.
@@jv-ep2tc Sad to hear. RIP
Is. He still doing speaking events? My dream is to hear him speak and to meet him.
There’s actors, musicians, athletes, politicians who come on as guests.
Then there is Captain Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13! In a class of his own!
Couldn't agree more,
Fantastic sense of humour.
I thought he was a better guest than many Hollywood stars.
Conan was honored to speak with this courageous man. Lovell had to fgure out the rentry trajectory ON PAPER. Physicist, pilot, explorer, astronaut, hero.
I can't imagine being that intelligent
@@angelareese390no kidding. You believe in the moon landing
@@mozymandias1441is that a joke? Or you think you are snarter than evetxone. The thing is secret like "fake moon landing" is not possible to hide
@@mozymandias1441 The Moon landing is a fact - whether you believe it or not does not matter.
@@mozymandias1441Have you been paying attention? Catastrophe struck before they even GOT to the moon!
Happy birthday captain Lovell, 96 today.
Jim Lovell seems very relaxed and at home in this clip, almost belies the skill and courage needed to do what he does...amazing
Being in the public eye is something astronauts train for.
He made a joke about looking like Tom Hanks, but i can actually hear hints of Tom Hanks in his voice lol
Kevin Costner actually looks like him
I think he sounds a bit like Norm Macdonald.
Most likely Tom Hanks spoke with him to imitate his voice.
Lovell actually suggested Costner to portray him before Hanks joined the project.
@@ravenaussie3760if you listen without the video, it is exactly like Norm, unreal
Never mind having Tom Hanks on the show, go to the real man himself to talk about Apollo 13. Way to go Conan!
Getting him was easier than getting Hanks.
@@EtoCobraI d rather have Lovell, and I am a huge Hanks fan.
This guy's a damn hero, along with Haise,Swigert,Mattingly and Gene Kranz and really everyone who helped get them back alive and well.
I have just heard that Jim Lovell’s wife Marilyn has died. My condolences and sympathies go to Captain Lovell and his family. I know that they will have so many people offering their support and comfort at this sad time. Mrs. Lovell’s voyage on this planet is now over but I know she will never be forgotten and she will be remembered very fondly by so many people.
Once again, deepest condolences to Jim Lovell and his family on their bereavement. Having survived the near disaster of Apollo 13, largely in part due to the bravery he showed and that of his crew members, he was able to have and enjoy 53 more years with his wife and family. He and Frank Borman are now the longest living people who have gone into space and their flight on Gemini 7 in 1965 means it is the earliest American mission whose crew members are still alive, nearly 58 years later. I believe the first women in space, Russian Valentina Tereshkova, who flew in 1963, is the earliest person to fly into space still alive.
Craziness. When you put it to "53 more years they bought by bringing that crew home." It puts everything into perspective.
That's the best case scenario, most of the guys lived into their 90's... sucks about Jack though.
That is total bull shit. Your condolences are not being seen by his family. What you mean is, "look at me everybody, I care" If you really cared you would find the family address and send a card.
@@Capecodham Holy fuck, dude, calm down. Not everything is about getting attention. They just wanted to say how they felt somewhere.
@@GuyYouMetOnline You used a word no woman would do with you. My condolences
@@Capecodham Really? That's the best you could come up with?
All astronauts are heroes whether they’re our guys or cosmonauts or from other nations. Captain Lovell is one of our best great interview by Conan.
Agreed! 👍
Captain Jim Lovell truly a GOAT of the astronauts. 2 Gemini flights, 2 Apollo flights.
This aired closer to the Apollo 13 launch date than the present day
Well, that’s depressing
Get out
Infact, it is closer to the passing of the voting rights act than it is to today
Thanks a lot, bro.
Watching this in 2024, further from the Apollo 13 launch date than the Apollo 13 crew was from America's entry into WW1.
There are very few people who have the combined skills of being an expert test pilot and astronaut AND a great storyteller. It's great that we have Lovell as an example to share his experiences so eloquently.
I loved hearing that he would whistle and sing while going about his tasks in space. I unconsciously do that myself at work.
Real American hero right there
quite Real. Defintely American hero.
Apollo 13 has always been one of my favorite movies. What a great interview, wish it was twice as long!
Same here! ❤
Got to meet him myself around 2006 or so, back when he co-owned a fine dining restaurant in Lake Forest, Illinois with his son, Jay (his eldest son, the one who was in the naval academy, as seen in the movie), a restaurant that has sadly been closed for almost a decade now; a shame, too, as it had really good food, and their green apple martinis were the best I ever had.
Whenever Jim Lovell himself (called The Captain by the restaurant staff) was in the area, he would stop by the restaurant to greet the patrons. We ended up chatting for a few minutes, and I got to shake his hand and have my picture taken with him. He was the first (and most legendary) astronaut I ever met, and a personal hero of mine.
Even when he wasn't there, the place was a real treat to visit. The restaurant had memorabilia of Jim's Navy and NASA days, especially down in the lower lounge area, where you could have after-dinner drinks and cigars (this being a time when Illinois still allowed smoking indoors, before they banned it in 2008). There were also photographs of some of the characters from the movie on the walls, as well. And the painting that served as the inspiration for the mission insignia hung in the front lobby.
I had heard that Jay had opened up a new restaurant in Highwood, Illinois, but I have not been there yet. And I don't know if Jim himself ever visits, or if any of his memorabilia adorns the place. But if I ever get the chance to go, you will be certain I will do it.
I too was in that restaurant, about 2004, and also had the chance to meet Commander Lovell. He was so down-to-earth and authentic. I knew I was speaking to a hero but he made me feel as though we were just having an easy conversation about the weather. Yes, too bad the place is now closed. Great food and a wonderful atmosphere, made all the richer with his presence.
@@davidladd8821 Yeah, it was truly an experience meeting him. Of course, he'd probably tell you that the real heroes were the NASA engineers who worked around the clock to bring him and his crewmates home safely.
I was 9 when Apollo 13 launched. I remember Jim Lovell. He was my mom’s favorite astronaut. I admire him so much. He is now 96 and my mom just turned 98. I remember those tense days after the accident in space and then the splashdown. Wow.
Dude's very charismatic...
Great man and indeed a legend: 95 years old and still going strong !
This guy is my favorite astronaut.
The astronauts were the heroes of my youth. I followed the space race from the beginning. To this day, at 70-years old it still fascinates me and I never tire of listening to these great Americans. Unfortunately, most of the pioneer astronauts have passed on. I will never forget them.
I remember the Apollo 13 mission very well when I was in the Navy. A true act of heroism and resolve. I also grew up during the project Mercury years and had a couple favorite astronauts of the original 7 but Jim Lovell surplanted that a long time ago. A true hero and great guy. Hand salute Capt. Lovell.
Love seeing and hearing Jim Lovell. Seemed like a regular person yet so gifted
What Jim pulled off is still mind blowing
Fake
@@eddienicholsonjr6080 What’s “fake?” Please explain this comment.
A true hero. Brings tears.
I truly feel that amongst hundreds of astronauts there are none that compare to James Arthur Lovell Jr. The perfect level of intelligence, courageousness, modesty, wit, wisdom, and 'The right stuff'.
When the Apollo program ended in 1972 Lovell was the only American astronaut who had flow in space FOUR times.
This movie changed my life.
How?
Conan very respectful at the end
A truly amazing man..missed his shot at the moon..but will always be remembered for bringing back Apollo 13...of course with his two fellow crew..
I watched this unfold in real time; me and my Dad and we lived in England at the time. We were so obsessed with the Apollo program that I was allowed to watch the news with him as long as I was awake; school was a wash…
Unbelievable how all these incredible guys kept their cool through this VERY dangerous situation. You listen to the mission tapes, even at the most dramatic moments, you pert near fall asleep. Professionalism the like of which doesn't seem to exist in the world in these degenerate times. I have so much respect for these fellows.
This is one of the main reasons that NASA chose test pilots as their astronauts. These are men that are used to being in literal untested craft (because THEY are the ones testing them), so their jobs were already to operate craft nobody had operated before, and report problems calmly, etc.
Truly an example for the young men of today, intelligent, well spoken, with class and humility. He speaks of Tom Hanks with mutual respect, something this country needs desperately today.
Truly a blessing to have this man on this Earth. Keep on looking up!
My dog is named after his fellow Apollo 13 astronaut, Fred Haise. He was a stray and a shelter dog before I rescued him, his birthday is April 17th, the same day Apollo 13 returned to earth safely. They'd named him Fred at the shelter and I thought it was appropriate because like Apollo 13, Fred's life started out as a disaster but he made a miraculous recovery with a little help.
That's brilliant! Hope he's still in good health.
He’s not dead
Okay?
I was a contractor at Stennis Space Center for several years, and although we met a lot of extraordinary men and women, shaking hands with Fred Haise is at the top of my list.
God bless Captain Jim Lovell !
Man, them casting Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 really was spot on in more ways than one - he looks and sounds almost the same!
For those who didn't catch it, Jim Lovell had a cameo in the movie; he played the captain of the recovery ship where we see the astronauts exiting the helicopter. Tom Hanks shakes hands with him during that scene.
Absolute Gent and Legend…..
Mamma said it was the only time our whole little world pulled together, praying as one people, devoid of any differences whatsoever.
Great Capt. Lovell
Tom Hanks is such a spaceflight fanboy, I can only imagine how excited he was to meet Capt. Lovell.
Captain Lovell lives in my town. Wonderful man. He actually judged the local dog competition once.
A true hero.
Fucking legend.
A true American hero
Total hero. I read his book without knowing the movie was near release. Then I needed to shut up when in theater with GF.
Such a cool interview.
Sometimes I wish comedian interviewers would know when to stop trying to outshine their interviewees with cheap attempts to get laughs. Every now and then guests come along who should just be listened to, like this legend…
James Lovell one of my Astronaut heroes.
National Treasure.
This man is an icon and one of my heroes!
Maravilhosa história, filme espetacular, grande capitão Lovell e super parceiros astronautas!!
A true American hero.
I can spend hours listening to Capt Lovell
Commander Lovell is the best & greatest Apollo astronaut, a true living legend! God bless him.💯
Jim Lovell is probably the most Personable of all the Astronauts. At the time of Apollo 13, he had the most Time in Space of all the Astronauts/Cosmonauts
"One of these days! Straight to the moon!"
You’ve gotta be a boomer to get your reference! 😉👍
i'm so jealous, getting to talk to someone who's been in space.
I went to a Star Trek convention and got to meet a shuttle astronaut. :) It was 2000 or 2001 I think.
That was a good interview.
I never had heard that they spent time together before like that. And I’m a total space geek.
Captain Lovell❤
A great astronaut. My favorite.
He looked really old here for 64 years of age.. incredibly hes still alive at today at 95
"You let Forrest Gump fly?" LOL
Jim Lovell is my favorite astronaut
I have a photo of him that he signed for me when I was about 6 years old in 73/74. Sadly over the years the marker used has faded to invisible and the personalized signature is gone.
Insane to me that this episode aired far closer to the actual events of Apollo 13 than to the present day.
Lovell for President
"You let Forrest Gump take the controls of the plane???!!!"
Fake
The BBC did a production of Apollo 13 years ago. It was very good for its time. A pity it seems to be lost.
My favorite tom hanks film. Apollo 13
His wife. His high school sweetheart passed recently. 😢. God speed mrs Lovell
4:28 foreshadowing of castaway and sully
This would have been right around the time I started watching Conan. I don't remember if I watched this episode.
Tom Hanks killed this role, but damn does he look a lot like Kevin Costner lmao
True! Kevin Costner was actually Jim Lovell's suggestion when he first became involved in the project. It turned out brilliantly though, Tom Hanks is a space buff himself, so he truly had the appreciation and interest for the program (Apollo program). That's why he and Ron Howard made "From Earth To The Moon" on HBO a few years after Apollo 13 together.
Jim Lovell was actually given a nickname "Shaky" by some of his fellow naval aviators but in fact one heck of a smart pilot and astronaut.
Jim Lovell has a cameo appearance in the movie - he's on the deck of the aircraft carrier when the astronauts step off the helicopter.
Back when being level headed was the norm and not everything revolving around feelings
The guy is an astronaut; he is not normal
@ that is true. Takes a certain type of person to be an astronaut
what a guy
How have I not yet seen this film?
They did hype it. They made Jack Swigart look totally incompetent, which was not the case. Mattingly did not help in the rescue and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin did not play nursemaid to Grandma Lovell.
feel better?
But Gene Kranz did wear that white vest.
Incorrect on all points except swigart.
Fun fact: in the original novel, Forrest Gump almost does become an astronaut, but his rocket crashes into the jungle.
He’s currently the oldest living astronaut
This guy has been to the Moon twice (Apollo 8 and Apollo 13). If I ever get to go, I want him to go with me.
I've said in the past that after he and Fred Haise pass on, some of their ashes should be sent to the moon so they finally get there.
Correction: Tom Hanks got to meet Jim Lovell
I guess flying a plane is nothing to those guys.
Sad to think that 6 days after this was posted to @RUclips. Marilyn Lovell passed away. His wife of 71 years
Sharp as a tack. Great genetics!
A guy who went to the moon twice and never walked on it, and yet he's so happy and full of life. Compare this to Buzz Aldrin's bitterness about being the second guy to do it.
well, Neil and Buzz landed at the exact same time, so there's that. Buzz was the first to take Communion om the moon though.
Bitter? I think Buzz is only "bitter" when some nutjob tells him he hever went to the moon at all.
BEAT ARMY!
As of July 8th, 2024 Both Mr. Lovell and Haise are still alive.
Tom hanks got him spot on
What can you say, I mean really? There are Heroes, and then there are these fellows! I was space mad as a kid in the 1960's, and was not the slightest bit interested in Christmas when Apollo 8 orbited the moon that year. Anders, Boorman, and Lovell. Shame he diddnt get to walk on the moon. Bless him.

The First, Last, and the Next man to fly around the 🌙 all Naval Aviators...
Anyone else did the post-Conan death check?
I'm guessing Jordan saw the Russia Lunar-25 Crash news and decided to upload a lunar-landing clip
i think he's a earned a little more respect than "post-interview death check"
@@noizz4 But Apollo 13 didn't land on the moon...
