I dont stretch before workouts, i get a good compound warm up.. elliptical, bike, running etc.. I feel like you should get muscles fired up for a workout instead of losing the energy in your muscle by stretching. But POST STRETCH IS A DEFINITE!

I dont think that 3-6sec short stretches before workout are bad, but you're right!

You are correct. Never do static stretches when muscles are cold. *Dynamic* stretches before exercising, *static* stretches after exercising. Also, there is a lot of evidence now that favors stretching tight muscles before going to bed, so that they are elongated while the healing/restoration process is going on overnight. This has helped me tremendously with my extremely tight quads.

A stretched muscle is not a relaxed muscle, so I'm not sure what he's getting at, your muscles are extremely tense if you stretch properly. Also I might add, when I'm doing Shoulders and Triceps, it shouldn't stop me from increasing the flexibility in my legs, back, and core in between sets.

even if stretching does make you ''not as tight'' / weaker , the goal of every workout is to overload the muscle and tear it down to the deepest fibers possible . Weighted resistance AND stretching affects the cells to the deepest level .Stretching before and during workout is crucial and / or mobility . Even if you do strictly mobility , which is feel there is no debate about , you are stretching and loosening up your body .

Ben, have you ever heard of Eccentric Quasi Isometrics? Your explanation of holding a loaded stretch reminded me of that technique. Similar to DC training were they do loaded stretching after lifting, but instead at end range you almost try to hold isometrically against the weight. The quasi eccentric portion coming from the actuality that as you fatigue in your isometric the muscle slowly lengthens. Just my mind rolling with your idea.

I'm hoping to compete as early as next year but I have no idea if I should do a whole body routine of compound exercises before I step on foot to engage the pump, or a whole body routine of isolation exercises in order to get pumped before I set foot on stage. What would you suggest?

6:22, better way to do this would be to use the first position, but once you are there, push back by contracting your back, so there is maximum stretch combined with the contraction of the opposing muscle.

  • @TheOpportuneNoodle

some awesome advice as usual. but i was a little confused on the loaded stretches. do you do loaded stretches in between sets? for example bench press, rack, rest, loaded stretch, rest, repeat... or is it at the end of a set, for example bench press, loaded stretch, partner helps you rerack, rest..... can someone help me out with that

I believe in stretching after working out or during resting periods between workouts.. After/between working out because my muscles are tight and rigid and it feels right to get them loose and ready for more.. and who wants to be sitting there like a bitch doing nothing while resting when you can be stretching those muscle fibers out? Also i believe in holding isometrics at the hardest position (sticking points) of each workout until failure just to ensure ive gotten the most out of my workout bc i figure when it only takes a few more seconds to do something thatll surely increase my gains WHY NOT?! Then there are plyometrics... Those are my favorites XD but im just a beginner, so what do i know?
