Soooo.... I ended up keeping them. I stand by what i said which is, they are terrible for mac users! But on the other hand, they are so incredibly good for apple tv that i couldn't let them go, as we do a lot of movie watching as well a music listening from our main TV in the living room, which is where they live now. thanks again for watching!!
Hey, Robie- I honestly have not revisited that scenario since filming the video. Let me test it out when I get home later today. You’ve got me curious about this now!
Hey Robie! Unfortunately, I have some not-so-great news. I tested the two most important parts of the project, and unfortunately, they didn’t work as expected. The first part was using HomePods as the audio output for an application like Final Cut Pro. Unfortunately, Final Cut Pro still has a major audio sync issue, making it completely unusable. The second part was watching videos on the TV app or in a browser window. Everything worked perfectly, and the videos synced up well. However, it seems like they’re not outputting in Dolby Atmos. I did try to find a way to fix this, but I didn’t have much time to spend on it. The overall experience is unchanged as far as I can tell and would still recommend avoiding them as your main output from a Mac specifically. I do however continue to love them as a companion to my Apple TV in our master bedroom. They sound amazing in this space and I will likely continue to use them for years to come!! Take care Robie!!
@@NigelWorkman sorry for all the trouble man. I thought Dolby Atmos over Airplay 2 will include Mac as well but too bad. Really appreciate the effort in testing those out. Cheers!
I wanted to get it once they launch in Singapore in a few days time but I’ve second thoughts now after watching your video as I’ve intended to use it with my iMac as a computer speaker like what I’ve been doing with my Bose and Marshall.
Hi Bren, I’m relieved that you saw the video before you went through all the headache. I just bought the new “era” line of Sonos speaker and I didn’t even think to test them with the computer. What I will say is, they sound incredible! I will test this for you and see if I can recommend them as your Mac speakers. Check your RUclips Tomorrow night and there should be a answer for you! Take care
Hey bren, I tested them with 3 different macs (just to be safe) and I can confidently say, they (era 300) work MUCH better than the HomePods! There is still the average amount of latency you would expect when using Bluetooth to send audio- but it’s very minimal. Side note, the era 100 is also available which are about Half the size and about half the price. One thing to note, there is no spatial audio support when sending audio from you Mac to the Sonos speakers. Good luck buddy!
@@NigelWorkman Thank you so much, appreciate the detail and hard work you have put into this. I’ll most probably get the Era100 after hearing from you👍🏻. Will it be ok for you to share with me on their cable length, need to make sure the length is enough for me to place the speaker towards the end of my table without the need for extension 😄. Can’t find any information on this part. Sorry for the trouble🙏.
@@bren_da_ no worries, Bren- I’m happy to help! The cable on the era 300 is roughly 1.6 meters. Can’t say for sure if the era 100 shares this measurement, but I think there is a extremely good chance it does. Best of luck to you!
@@NigelWorkman I took a day off yesterday just so that I can try out the HomePod 2 on its launch day here in Singapore. It was a disappointment, the speaker sounded very bassy and muffled. They won’t connect the speaker to the iMac for me to try 😂. So I ended up purchasing the Sonos Era 100 after trying it at another store, no regrets! Connects to my iMac well and it sounded great, I did not get the Era 300 as I’m not a fan of its size and shape😅 and I am ok not to have the additional spatial audio for now. Thanks so much for the info sharing👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻!
Airplay form iPhone for Apple Music don’t need Apple TV , HomePod is the only speaker support airplay Dolby atoms. Sonos era 300 need to use Sonos app to get DA from Apple Music
Not sure if you watched the whole video, or happened to read the thumbnail, but my intention with the HomePods was to use them as a set of speakers for my Mac mini. I realize there are other ways to get spatial out of them. The reason I used the Apple TV as my secondary device was, it would be closer to the capability of the mac given it could also play video content, not just music. I should have clarified that. At any rate- thanks for pointing that out 👍
Hey Dan, I haven’t connected them back to the Mac since filming the video. The performance was so poor that I ended up unpairing them and moved them to 2 separate locations. They work great as a smart speaker- especially if you run home automation with HomeKit.
I fully agree. Apple products under his watch were FAR less buggy/glitchy and had features that were fully realized before launch. Oh how I miss the good old days 🥹

Hi Nigel! Just wondering if this is still the case after MacOS 18 and HomePodOS?

Im sure there will be a software update and fix all of that.
It’s funny you should say that- I just moved them back to my desk today to see if there were any improvements….nothing good to report as of yet!

So are you returning them?
I still have a couple more days to figure it out. We shall see
Good video!
Thanks so much, Redcodi! Really appreciate it! spread the word!

Has your experience improve when using with the Mac?

I still want one 😂
Steve jobs would be pissed at the implementation of this thing. It would have never made it to market in it's current form if he was alive.

Do you even have an iPhone or iPad ? no iPhone no Homepod
I have them all.
Please read my response to your other comment in case you haven’t yet. That will clarify my intention here.
I told you those are terrible
They are the best/worst speakers ever.
