      The effective mass is used in transport calculations, such as transport of electrons under the influence of fields or carrier gradients, but it also is used to calculate the carrier density and density of states in semiconductors.

    Sir my College professor taught us a different derivation which is about three pages long and the conclusion is m*= h^2/(d^2E/dK^2) too much different but I saw your video and it is very easy to understand so what should I do the one which my professor taught me or the one you. actually I have my semester exam so if you can answer please reply.

    why we have to take m & m1 , why electrons have different mass ?
    mass can neither be created nor destroy
    atom can neither created nor destroy

      According to Einstein's theory of relativity, if object is in motion then it's mass changes. That concept all ready we studied in 12th science.

      If it will be asked in exam then you can write about Effective mass of Electron.
      As in both topics m star (Effective mass of electron) valu is derived.
      So don't worry. You may get full marks.
