    So, just last night, the Chosen showed a rough cut of a scene from Season 3. It was an intimate moment between Jesus and his mother Mary while he is home for a religious holiday.
    But there is actually way more to this quick scene than you might have noticed.
    What I want to show you is how, in just three minutes, The Chosen touched on some major scripture moments and contextual details that are easy to miss. But when we understand them, and when we go look at these moments in the Bible, it will help us to understand the gospels in ways we never have before.
    So, if you’re interested in knowing what these details are, and understanding both the show and the Bible better than you ever have before, then join me for this episode of The Chosen Explained.

    The Greek term for “brother”, adelphos, may refer not only to blood relatives, but also to distant cousins or, more widely, to others with whom one shares a spiritual bond.

    • @metalheadisme8389
      @metalheadisme8389 Год назад +4

      It “can” be taken that way in context. But that's not the most natural reading. If it was being used in that sense, it'd probably be used to include the 4 men and 2 women, but in Mark 6:3 adelphos is used for the 4 brothers with adelphe for the 2 sisters. Even so, it could potentially mean close relative, but that is not as natural a reading and probably less likely. Thing is, I could accept it going either way. A Catholic position is that it must mean close relatives, because of the position that Mary remained a virgin and is Queen of heaven. There is no biblical support for that position though and hence I don't think it should leverage that requirement on the meaning of adelphos here.

    • @stephaniefroelich267
      @stephaniefroelich267 Год назад +3

      As a Catholic, I agree with the statement that brother could be distant relative. The Catholic faith believes Mary was and is ever virgin. Our faith is not based on scripture alone, but also on tradition. In the Catholic Catechism paragraph 500 it says, “In fact James and Joseph, “brothers of Jesus”, are the sons of another Mary, a disciple of Christ, whom St. Matthew significantly calls”the other Mary.” They are close relations of Jesus, according to an Old Testament expression.”

      Yeah it makes more sense with historical context of cultural language.

    • @berthakogut7881
      @berthakogut7881 10 месяцев назад

      Actually, Jesus Himself did not refer to those “brothers” and “sisters” as aldophos and adelphai but “syngeneusin”. He clarifies what their relationship actually was. This word means “brother or sister from another womb” & refers to cousins/kinsmen. Since we read Scripture in English usually, this all translates to brethren and sisters. I’ll post below but it’s important to know that Syngeneusin can NEVER be used with blood siblings. It means “cousins” or clansmen/kinsmen or kinswomen” while adelphos and adelphai are more ambiguous in terms that although translate to “brothers and sisters” can mean either actual siblings, kinsmen or kinswomen ( cousins ) or ideological brethren and sisters.
      Additionally, when Jesus speaks of his own house, it doesn’t denote a physical abode like it does today. It refers to lineage…a way to track genealogy among the Hebrews to ironically allow them to identify the Messiah.
      The Gospel of Mark 6:
      …hearing him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to him, that such mighty works are performed by his hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother (adelphos) of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters (adelphai) here with us?” So they were offended at him. 4 But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country (en têi patridi), among his own relatives (en tois syngeneusin autou), and [relatives] in his own house [of the father’s family line from which one descends] (en têi oikiai).” 5 Now, he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief.’
      That Mary remain a Perpetual Virgin is also supported biblically and culturally at the Crucifixion. If she had other children, she would go live with them after Jesus died on the Cross not John. It is believed Joseph also remained celibate. There is Biblical precedence for this as well.
      All this is lost when only read in vernacular translations and changes and customs since 1st century Holy Land.

    • @berthakogut7881
      @berthakogut7881 10 месяцев назад

      Actually there is Biblical support that these were relatives not blood brothers and sisters. Please read my longer comment.

    The only issue is challah wasn’t invented nor part of our Jewish tradition till around the 1600s when European Jews used German style enriched doughs to make their special Shabbat bread. But Jewish communities who remained in the Middle East/Africa never used this bread for holidays or shabbats. Also Rosh Hashana (biblically more often called Yom HaTeruah) wasn’t really yet a thing in Yeshua time. It was a later rabbinic changing and addition to the holiday. The new Year declared in the Torah is Passover. In Yeshua’s time some were starting to see the agricultural new year that happened along side Yom HaTeruah as a new year, but more so it was a day of the blast and a day of a calling to repentance, not a big celebration.

    According to the Catholic faith, Jesus didn’t have actual siblings- the use of “brother” meant something like us using “bro” today, more of an endearing word meaning dear friend. Those closest to Jesus. Mary didn’t have other children. I believe the Chosen is trying to highlight wonderful traditions of the past. These discrepancies aren’t important- Dallas is clear saying they take creative control to portray how things might have been and some scenes aren’t actual historical happenings. The most important part of the Chosen is to understand the man of Jesus, why he came for us, what that means for our salvation, and how key people like the disciples and apostles were critical in the spread of Christianity and the reason why we are all Christians today. I love seeing the Bible come to life- the Chosen is a beautiful display of what we believe as Christians.

      Ok I believe your Islam faith and I believe Christian faith and I believe in Catholic faith and Budah and all of the religions. I do not believe in the way some try to teach the scripture and I do not like how preachers try to force things into my head. But for you to come here and say that Jesus was mearly a man then tell me how come you have not been able to steer all the believers in Jesus away from him yet? I will tell you why. Because people like me that have such a strong faith but not really a very strong culture went searching for something I know is there but I didn't know what or where. When I found Jesus or Jesus found me and I grew a relationship with his his teaching and I read the Quran they teach me the same thing. People do not understand the Quran and take the evilness that is not what it is sayingg but each of us has to work out our demons. What I am saying is there is in no way in this World you will even convince me that There was no Jesus. For when I call to him he is there ad a matter of fact I do not think he ever leaves. My side now. He guides me when I cannot see. I can hear his voice when he warms me of danger. He calls my name when I feel lost. I believe in 1 God for all of us. What ever his name may be called God Allah Elijah El shaddai or Jesus does not mean he is this many people or entities this means that we all know there is something that is there holding us together. And that is Love and that is what Jesus was trying to teach us. In a time when people needed to learn how to love each other. Because coveting thy neighbor's wife and stuff was not love. Because killing lives was not love. Because idolizing golden cows or neon signs was not love. Stealing was not love. Turning on your family and disrespecting them was not love. We needed guidance to the right way of living without creating a reason to fear or guilt. So until your culture starts teaching me personally about your religion I will stick with the best most beautiful story even to survive eternity.

    While there is not doubt that James, Joseph, Simon, and Jude were relatives of Jesus, I believe it is important to note that the Greek word used for brothers, adelphos (singular) or adelphoi (plural), is not restricted to biological brothers as we see in the Septuagint and the New Testament:
    “So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers” (Gen 13:8, NIV; see also 14:12). But Abram and Lot were not biological brothers, but Lot was Abram's nephew.
    Paul writes, “[Jesus] appeared to more than five hundred…brothers at the same time” (1 Cor. 15:6).
    Both of these use the same Greek word applied to Jesus' brothers, but it clearly does not mean biological give the verse's context.

    • @robertdelisle7309
      @robertdelisle7309 Год назад +7

      If the Greek word for brother has a semantic domain of meaning, then we must rely on the context to give us the most straight forward interpretation.
      Matthew 1:25 states that Joseph "knew her not until she had brought forth her firstborn son", meaning that Joseph and Mary did have normal marital relations after Jesus's birth. There marriage produced children.
      “Isn’t this the Carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us? “ (Mark 6:3) The crowd in Nazareth, are taking offense at Jesus because they knew him and his family members. They list Mary as Jesus‘s mother, and then list his brothers and sisters. The most natural reading of this is that these are his immediate family members and not extended family members like cousins.
      In Galatians chapter 1 verse 19 Paul says that he went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter, but didn’t meet any of the other apostles. Only James, the Lords brother. Why is Paul making a distinction with James from all the other apostles? It is because James has a unique relationship with Jesus, because he is Jesus’ half- brother.
      If a person was not bound to the Marian dogma of perpetual virginity, he would read these passages as I do, because it’s the most natural way of reading them. But if one is kept from a natural reading because of a dogma, he must find an alternative reading to satisfy the dogma.

      @Faison Cochrane The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin. In other words, Mary was indeed saved but via PREVENTION. As the "Ark of the Covenant" which contains the "Word", it is fitting that she is immaculate and preserved from sin in the first place.

      What verses in the Bible supports your comment? None...so it's a manmade thinking. What did Jesus say to Mary when He was on the Cross? ' Woman, your son ' Meaning that Disciple John would now watch over Mary, as Joseph was no longer on earth. But He did Not call her mother, since He existed before time began. Just like when they told Jesus ' your mother and family are looking for you'.
      He replied ' Who is my mother, and who is my brother? Those who do Gods will are my mother and family. He gave no homage to her, but respected her. He knew she was from Adam...but Jeses is the second Adam.
      Read the Bible and you will know thew truth, and the Truth will set you free.
      Ask God to reveal truth, regardless of what you were taught
      Do you know that Jesus was with God in the beginning?
      Did you know that Mary was born like any other person was, but Jesus came to earth (the Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us) .
      Jesus existed from the beginning, but had to come in the flesh.
      He also had to have sinful nature, to be tempted in all ways (yet He did not sin)
      If Mary was not like the rest of us, and had no sinful nature, then He could not Redeem us from Sin.

      @@bole6404 Let’s be honest, none of the Marian dogmas of: Perpetual Virginity, Immaculate Conception -where she is kept from original sin and personal sin and her Assumption into Heaven are true because the scriptures teach it. Rather, they are said to be true based on later traditions. All three of these dogmas are in conflict with what has been written by the Holy Spirit in scripture. One must use typology to make the case, which is dangerous because of its subjectivity. You can make anything “true” by looking for types in the Old Testament and making analogies.

    3. Mary is the Woman of Gen 3:15, and in Rev 11, the Ark, and in Chapter 12. Mary’s role was significant and unique as the New Eve, not just a good mom. Our roles are significant and not generic as well. Praise to the Lord and thank you for yours.

I also thought that scene was powerful when he asked where the box was (that held the donkey bridle), and Mary got sad as she realized Jesus was going to die soon. All of his life she knew this was his destiny and she accepted it, but silently lamented that day would come.

      Hey! Catholic here that definitely doesn't believe Jesus had biological siblings.
      There's a tradition among the Orthodox churches that Jesus may have had step siblings via St. Joseph. Or, as you pointed out, it may have been cousins or other relatives.
      In the livestream clip, it was left vauge what exactly the relationship was there. If it's that vauge in the show, I think we'll be ok. The theme of Jesus being rejected by the people in his hometown, including his relatives, is definitely in the gospel, so I think it's still appropriate and fits, even if written in a way that makes the non-evangelical crowd cringe a bit.
      That said... really hoping Dallas remains respectful of the beliefs of what amounts to a very large percentage of his audience.

    A premise suggested here is that Jesus had siblings, since the Bible references his “brothers”. This is a misinterpretation of the original Greek word “adelphos”, which in some translations appears as “brethren” or “kinsmen”. While including biological siblings, “adelphos” can also mean extended family, such as cousins or other relatives. A similar situation arises in Genesis 13:8, which uses the term in reference to the relationship between Abram and Lot, who were not biological “brothers”, but uncle and nephew.

      If Matthew was written in Hebrew originally and he was there, he would have been spot on.

      The Greek was the first collected translated attempt of non hebrew
      Many Bible scholars over hundreds of years stated that Matthew (Mathisyahu) sctibed in the Hebrew -Aramaic language of his day, and quite possibly of other scriptures of the NT by apostles.
      Each of the 4/5 (with Acts) mentions the family of Jesus, hard to dispute the inspired Word of God. Nowhere do we see God telling Mary & Joseph they’d have a “celibate marriage”- which is not a union in Jewish culture

      Christianity is pagan.✔️
      Statues in the church indicate that Christianity is pagan .
      Jesus is just a human being and messenger .
      Human being like me and you .
      Jesus did not know the unseen,
      Jesus did not know the Hour,
      Jesus could not do anything on his own,👈
      Jesus was sent by God,
      Jesus was praying to God
      Jesus is not God or the son of God
      Jesus is a man, mortal .
      If No mary , no Jesus .
      The incarnation is a pagan and polytheistic idea
      Islam is the true religion, Islam is the religion of monotheism ❤️
      Christianity is a pagan religion.
      I invite you to Islam, and to pray to the One, True, Living God.

    Mary was immaculate. A virgin before and after Jesus birth. She did not have other children. Jesus's "brothers " are cousins or possibly half brothers from Joseph

      Think what you will but it says NO WHERE in the bible that Mary had to remain a virgin. This is purely a Catholic teaching & not from the bible. What purpose would that have? She was a normal Jewish woman as was her husband Joseph & they had children, both boys & girls. I would think that would make you happy as it shows them as a normal family, besides of course their oldest child being the Lamb of God.

      God would not curse Joseph with a whole life of no intimacy with his wife. What a horror to imagine. If so HE would have kept Mary single forever, not told them to marry. What a cruel teaching.

      You don’t understand Greek. And it’s not just a Catholic understanding of Scripture and Tradition, but all Apostolic Churches agree. In fact, so did the Protestant deformers.

      @@nataliegibbs7744 if that was the case, Jesus while on the cross, would not have told John to behold your mother and His mother to behold your son. Then John cares for Mary from then on. That's not how Jewish culture was. The perpetual virginity of Mary was from the very beginning understood and fully believed. It was accepted by every Christian for 1,500 years. Until Martin Luther wanted to be his own Pope. The first church that Christ himself started is still here. While there are over 33,000 other religions since Martin Luther. I'm pretty sure the Catholic Church knows the facts and has the full authority to teach correctly.

    first century Israel did not have names for kinsmen such as cousin etc and all relatives were called brother and sister if they had a blood line relative. Calling some Jesus' brothers did not mean they were his siblings.

    hmmm... I didn't see the livestream (found this video while searching for it), but I doubt that The Chosen will depict any male relatives of Jesus as being definitely the sons of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, since Dallas (a practical man) would be aware that this would immediately cause part of his audience to heave a sigh and quit watching because the series had jumped the shark (just as we would if Dallas suddenly married Jesus to St. Mary Magdalene or declared that King David was actually secretly King Saul's son.) Passing male relatives off as older half-brothers, sons of St. Joseph by an earlier marriage of which he is presumably a widower, is technically possible since St. Joseph is not infallibly declared a virgin (some people like to imagine him to be quite old, for which there is no particular evidence other than the whims of artists), but since The Chosen has already depicted him as relatively young (a very reasonable artistic choice) I don't think the timing would work out.
