    Hey there, I just stumbled across your channel. I've been living in St. Vith my whole life now and I'm amazed of how people around the world are still interested in the history of our little town. Nice to see that there are still people out there who are telling stories from the past to younger generations. You should never forget what happened.
    To be honest, I didn't really cared about the history of our town that much until a few months back.. but now seeing the importance it played during WW2 made me realized that we must never ignore our past. I've heard many stories from my grandparents who were kids back then but there are still stories that I didn't know about (the bells being molten to bullets,..) so there still is a lot to discover.
    So anyone who want's to visit our little rainy town, feel free to check it out. We got these boards, as you can see in the video, all over the city and there very interesting to read.
    And yeah btw we found the remains of a castle from the middle ages a few months ago and we're now digging them out bit by bit, so in a few years there will be some more things for to you see 😊
    Greetings from St. Vith
    Eric

    Great story. I went to St Vith many times during my assignment in Germany. Took my parents there on one trip to see where my mother's uncle hid-out in a barn for three days after getting separated from his unit. His family still has a sign in Louisiana that he sent home to remind him of the place that saved him. Side story, my friend knew that the Germans took all the church bells and sent them to Hamburg to be smelted. We found a historical marker there that tells the story about mountains of bells. Agree with others below, there should be a better resistance monument. Thanks for this series!

    These stories need to be heard, especially by the younger audience. People in North America are crying about being forced to stay in their homes because of the virus. This is a minor inconvenience when compared to what European civilians had to endure during WW2. Good job sir.

      Not to mention the untasteful and disrespectful and utterly disgusting "reenactments" that happened on tictoc a couple years ago. I'm lucky to have known about the Holocaust since I was 10 or 12, it gave me plenty of empathy for others and to not take anything in my life for granted.

He fought that battle until wounded by shrapnel on Dec 21st, '44, his 1st Purple Heart. He rejoined his unit in March of '45 after they had crossed the Rhine and finished his "tour" and came home late in '45. Somewhere in there he received his 2nd Purple Heart....And Bronze Star.

    • @juriaandeblok
      @juriaandeblok 4 года назад +4

      Cambell Evans yes or at the very least prevent them to be used by civilians as some type of signal. I know in many previous European wars the melting down of bells was a common practice. It was also a psychological blow to the population as the bells were often times a source of great pride of the town.

    Its worth remembering that more civilians were killed in Europe in WW2 (21-25 million) than soldiers on both sides. We in the new world, who have been spared invasion and liberation, have no idea what it would have been like. In St Vith alone, something like 2500 civilians lost their lives either as a consequence of the battle or having died in concentration camps.

    St Vith really was destroyed during this battle. Just about leveled. All their history destroyed, however people prevail and rebuild.

    His name was Major Long, and that's the "short" of it.

    These places have got to be haunted by those taken so violently in such a place full of violent hate and fear! May we never forget the sacrifice those few gave so many the chance to live as people with elected government’s instead of dictators!!

    Hey, first at all, thank you for your great and very intresting video's! The picture you are showing on this video at 06:05 is definitely not from St. Vith. This picture was taken in Limburg/Lahn, Germany, on March, 27th 1945. This picture shows a tank from the 9th Armored Division after Limburg was taken on the evening/night before. Follow the link to see the picture which shows the same place today: linowski.de/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/WP_20130714_003.jpg. Have a great time and stay healthy, Mario

      Thanks for the kind words and for the heads up on that photo. The source that I pulled that photo from said it was St. Vith but it's good to know where it was actually from. My bad!
