Heres the important question I would like the answer to.. Using your kayak as much as you do, how many sets of fins did you replace or have repair work done to the drive in the last year due to running into something. I'm looking to purchase an outback but can't afford a new one right now. And the decision I have to make is how much of a factor having reverse will be, because in the used outback market, there's a big price difference in order to have that ability. But it would also be of importance to know how often I'll be replacing fins or having my drive worked on because I've run aground, because either I didn't have reverse, didn't have fins folded back. Yes, either of those features appear to be a great value, but in real world numbers, in the last year or two how much did you have to Shell out for not having the fin kick up feature
I’ve had my fins replaced and the drive worked on zero times on the 2019 Outback. I do recommend getting the mirage drive 180. The reverse does come in handy.
I’ve had hobie kayaks for 5 years, never broke a rod in the fins, I use a depth finder and it helps when you are not in clear water! I’ve never replaced a fin or even had problem! They are super reliable, and the very best system on the market! You’ll love them, just be ready when a fish gets hooked, the fun begins!
Lance, What's your thoughts on reverse. Do you have the 180? In my area a used outback with no reverse I'm looking at $750. To get reverse, I haven't seen one for less that $1300 or $1400.
Hi Brian, I was used to not having reverse, but I have it now and I use it around docks and in the marsh or when it is windy! But only use it once in awhile cause I fish pretty big bodies of water! I can only see one flaw or concern, if you have kickup fins, if you are going down a river and have it in reverse, they don’t look like they kick up in reverse, it may sound silly and it is a minor thing, but I do fish slower going down river, back trolling just like a drift boat does! Slower keeps your lure or bait away from the weight near the bottom! I use a depth finder a lot which tells me when to split the mirage drive! Just a few days ago I went over a submerged roadway in about 6 inches of water, no problem just feathered the fins slowly! Got me into a deeper pond and out! I do love the 2019 outback, and may buy kick up fins, gonna try them out when available! Good luck fishing!
Brian E I bought my first Outback about 15 years ago (Hank Parker Outback Fish edition. Went into the tackle store to buy some hooks 🤣). Obviously it has the MD classic drive...no reverse. I have fished it extensively in ponds, lakes and rivers over the years here in VT with nary a problem. The boat and drive have worn like iron. Never bent a rod nor had any mechanical issue. Still own the boat (GF uses it now). This spring I bought a 2019 Outback with the 180 drive. Now after a full summer of use, I find I use the reverse constantly. It is invaluable to back out of shoreline trees/brush, work around docks and hold position in certain wind/current directions. It has largely stopped me from using an anchor. IMO it is well worth the extra $$. I have no opinion about the kickup fins other than to say I don’t go racing around when in skinny water. Feather and flutter is the name of the game. I do hear the kickup rudder doing its thing on occasion. Hope this helps.
Guys, He didn't upgrade because of the the kick up fins. As he said, His 2019 is still a good kayak. It's jus that he fishes 3-4 times a week and he can't do that on a blue coloured kayak. Simples.
2021 should be out soon and I’m trying to decide if I should just buy the 2020 or wait for the new model to come out I’m guessing not to long from now because I’m sure they will upgrade something and price will remain same
That would have been the smart thing to do. I'm thinking that he gets a hell of a deal from either Hobie or the place he buys them from. I mean just buy the new drive with kick up fins and save 2k(+)
Nick schmitz I’ve read that the 180 drive with the kick up costs around $890. Plus tax New. I guess you can sell the old one for some money back, but they are pretty expensive.
Can you do a side by side comparison of the MD180 drive and MD180 w/kick-up fins? Hobie said that we won’t be able to upgrade our 180 drives to have the kick-up fins. They look identical looking at the pics.
Jimmy Inthaphanh I’m wondering how kick up fins work on my 2019 Outback! Jimmy, hope you do a review on them before I spend a $800 ona set and find the regular md 180 was just Fine!icansee the kick up fins being useful ina river that flows with current strength.?
Is it my eyes or does the 2020 look like it has more freeboard, and less rocker(hope it's the correct term) at the front. The taper looks more gradual on the 2020. I hope so because a lot of people including myself thought the new outback sat too low in the water, especially for ocean fishing. And more of the hull in the water towards the bow would help it ride more of the swell/wave, rather than just punching through it and swamping the deck. Wishful thinking...
First, the positive: thanks for not adding idiotic, grating background music like a lot of reviewers do. Now, the constructive criticism: you could have easily made your points in a 3-minute video. One ridiculously tedious 11-minute review with 90 seconds worth of information is enough to keep people from coming back or subscribing. Secondly: you can spend probably $8,000+ on yaks and accoutrements, but you don't have a $6 tape measure?
I don't have money to buy a new one but if the new drive is available alone and fits on the 2019 .its my best idea for me to just buy the new drive and save me some money but I see your point when u do alot of fishing every week it's best to have a backup and have what Suitable for u.great job keep up the good work 👍
so what happens f you are peddling and the fins kick up? seems like it could be destructive and put a ton of torque on the single pin that holds it in place
That would be cool. I have a 15' that I'm putting the 180 drive conversion on in the next week or so. I just bought a 19' I would get the kick up conversion for it.
When randomly running into shallow water with the kickup fins (like where your kayak stops moving) do they still lock back into place so you can flutter kick after being kicked back? Or do you need deeper water and speed for them to lock back in?
RX Angler So do you prefer the non-kickback fins for shallow marsh fishing while fluttering? Seems like they could randomly get kicked back while super shallow and you wouldn't be able to reset them or pull the drive out.
For the shallow marsh system, the Outback is the better platform in my opinion. If I were doing freshwater or consistent bay fishing, Old Town would be my choice.
I just discovered that same crack on my 2017 Outback. I'd love to share information with you on this. I'd like to see if you were able to get warranty satisfaction or if you repaired the crack. Thanks, Mark in Portland, Oregon
Dude, don't you have a tape measure? You should make sure that you measure from the same spot, and not eyeball it... ;-) Great video! I have a Pro Angler 14, but thinking of getting an Outback as a second kayak so my wife can come out with me!
I liked watching your reviews but you have way too many commercials on your channel. I changed to another review after the third commercial. Best of luck to you.
I heard from one of the retail stores that the 360drive on the outback will tip the kayak. It’s not wide enough to maintain stability when you try to go sideways.
Why didn’t you just buy that drive system for $800 vs spending another $3,000 🤷🏽♂️ but hay your money 💵. What ever you got to tell yourself in the mirror to convince yourself you needed the NEW 2020
Break even?? Explain that one to me? He’s only gonna get 2k for his older one and just spent over 3K on the new one. Buy the drive and sell the older model. That makes the most sense. It’s the same kayak,
What I was meaning by that was if he's going to buy a new drive for $1000, or buy a 2020 for $3K and sell the old one for $2K. Either way he spends $1K and has a new yak. Now if he sells his old drive then yes that's a cheaper way to go. Some people like myself would probably justify keeping the old one as a spare.
@@paulf9653 Right that's what I was saying.. Sell the drive and away you go.. It seems silly to me but in the end it's his preference.. It's all good. Tight lines to all..
@@johndohlea4360 actually I fast forward thru 90% of it. don't get me wrong I watch his fishing vids from time to time... if you REALLY feel this was needed... then I guess u can't just do your own research on something as simple as KickUp Fins. in addition, if all the info was soooo great... why not measure the seat before hand lol... in reality... KickUp Fins are kinda nice if your finishing with lots of structure underneath... in the marsh ? hmmm not sure how much use youre gonna get outta kickup fins when your so shallow... not really worth an upgrade.
I wouldn't trust your measuring tool. That didn't look accurate. I would try measuring the seats over again with a real tape measure.
It would seem like just keeping the 19, selling the mirage drive and buying the drive with kick up fins
Listening to you justify why you need the newest kayak is funny. My wife didn't buy your reasoning!! Give me better ammo next time LOL
i guess it is quite randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Christian Daxton Lately I have been using FlixZone. Just search on google for it =)
@Kannon Moshe Yup, been watching on flixzone for since april myself :D
@Kannon Moshe thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) Appreciate it !!
@Christian Daxton happy to help xD

Can you just upgrade to kick up fins to 2019?
You could get the kick up's upgrade for round $200 for the old turbo fins.

Right now, the upgraded drive only comes with a new kayak. It's not available for sale by itself and probably won't be for a while.

going to pick up a 2020 Hobie Outback today this is a good comparison video, I got the seagrass color I'm so glad they came out with kick up fins

I agree w/ what you did, Nick. Too bad Hobie didn't sell the Mirage drive separately. Enjoy your new ride

Can you use the new drive on the 2018-2019?

Does the 2020 hobie outback comes already installed with Turbo fins And sailing rudder?
Yes
If you fish so often, why didn't you upgrade to a PA? I switched and will never go back to an Outback.
Here’s a stupid question why did you not just upgrade to the new kick up drive at around $900- that’s $2099- cheaper lol
When randomly running into shallow water with the kickup fins (like where your kayak stops moving) do they still lock back into place so you can flutter kick after being kicked back?
Or do you need deeper water and speed for them to lock back in?
You need deeper waters for them to reset.

Good video, interesting information on the kayak.
What are the forums to purchase 2019's?
Check out craigslist and Facebook marketplace as well as “let go” app.

Yes
I just use mine in bath tub, it never leaks!
