Emeralds in Colombia: What is the True Price of this Exquisite Green Gem? Investigation Documentary

- Walking the red carpets of the Cannes for the first time, Julia Roberts wore an enormously sublime emerald around her neck. This deep green, precious stone immediately captivated the public eye. The reaction was unprecedented; not only did it constitute an exquisite piece of jewellery, but also a profitable investment. On a value increase of 7% per year, this jewel exceeds the standards of its other star competitor, the diamond.
Colombia is the number one global producer of emeralds. At the edge of the official market, a parallel underground market finds prosperity, escaping all boundaries of control. We followed its trail, from Bogota to Paris. From underprivileged mine workers to international negotiators, as well as encountering the barons of these precious stones, this film draws this lucrative business out of the shadows.
After his first investigation on international cocaine routes, French-Colombian Journalist, Thierry Gaytán, returns in pursuit of the beautiful green diamond.
This documentary was produced by PALLAS and directed by THIERRY GAYTÁN. It was first released in 2016.

Please get rid of the AI voice and get an actual human to do it. Decent voice over work is so affordable online and it's such a missed opportunity, because the docus are actually very interesting and well filmed (except for many shots being taken from a bit too close and a lack of video quality). But people generally don't stick around for AI voices. It started to bother me quickly and I know from experience that I'm not the only one.
Yes I hate it I'm out it's just annoying 😑
Yeah, I skipped it immediately because of that crappy AI voice.

it’s just a voice lol man why do people cry? Just watch the shit
@@BrandonR420 Because it's unbearable. I haven't watched another video of theirs even though I really like the topics.
Best documentary, well done. You can make another documentary about what are the import and export process for the gem stones
A fine task, indeed
Good stuff Keep them coming diamond .gold ,silver etc. ! Top job ! Thank you !
I hope all people's who involves in this industry can get better life ❤
this "industry" shouldnt even exist i hope they get a better life so they dont have to exploit nature
@@jeroen7716 Literally every human and animal endevour exploits nature. We have to, so we can live. If you want it to stop, get the colombians to stop selling them.

Emeralds are the stones with the lowest internal clarity of any gemstones, on the average.
A clean green tsavorite can be extremely free from internal garbage.
alot of extrenal garbage we have to get through to get to them.
Great work my friend excellent video appreciate your team.👍
Very good documentary you made about stones values of all time
So all cash, no tax to Colombia, no import duty in EU, no income or sales tax from the smuggler, no workers comp or insurance for the miners. I suppose the relatively good news is that there isn’t massive amounts of mercury or cyanide used in the mining, but hundreds of tons of mine tailings washed in the rivers every day isn’t exactly adding value to the environment.
As much as I love emeralds, this brings home how shitty the entire life cycle of gemstones is.
It makes one despise the people who wear this stuff, but i guess it's their own twisted way of "helping" those in 3rd world conditions.
The cycle of gemstones is always shitty,it has never changed for 100s of years
@@t-dog8528easy to say when your poor and haven't got the money to buy the things you like so you hate ,not ever gem.has been gotten like this ...
100 years?? I'd say since humankind walks the earth. Gemstones, gold, any rare mineral, you name it
Many suffer in order for the few to have the riches.
Buy yourself a platinum coin, flip it a few times and imagine the amount of rocks that had to be mined by poor souls, possibly so deep under, that they can't stay for longer than a couple of hours. All that processed for that coin you have
Lmao like they care about the environment while making millions lol and there is nothing that you can do about it or i
Amazing documentary liked it. 👌
Why does this feel Like 2003-2009 I love it
Because they are so poor. It’s sad. But then again they don’t know anything else
Where do you think we sold the overstock to. And they don't throw out things like we do.
Thank you so much for the beautiful post❤ 👌
The emerald It’s nice and good for Colombian people, love you Columbian people
Great documentary, learned a lot.
Being told you’re not allowed to film in the building unless you have prior authorization and then walking all the way through the building and up to like the 3rd floor while actively filming and ignoring security in a place littered with cameras and guards is either insanely ignorant or ballsy af. The second they said no cameras that shit is off 😂😂😂 I’m not fucking around in a foreign country’s essentially federal fine gem trade building in a country where cops can shoot first and then just not even have a question 😂
My heart breaks for the poor miners, they hardly earn enough just to keep their little shacks over their heads, probably can only enough food to keep them going in order to mine everyday, now I know the real meaning of the treadmill existence, that’s what the disgusting energy of greed does, too sad for words
What do you suggest they do to support themselves?
@@mikeb5372 it’s hardly rocket science, whoever owns the mine could be more humane and increase their wages pure and simple
no one is forcing them
Oooohhh, shiny rocks!
EXACTLY!!!
These emeralds are worth soooooo much more now.
😘🙏👍❤️ Olla bonito Well-done good job God bless
Mempesona. Mineral yang indah❤
I love green stone ❤❤❤
I'm more interested on the tips and guide in dealing with the emeralderos. Where is that avenue? How to spot the real dealer and the scam dealer?
God bless the marketing geniuses that made rocks valuable.
: )
There were the prehistoric men
Well there more then just rocks there gems 😂and back in the early days could you imagine the feeling of finding something so colorful but naturally made
Seems that these people who make a living in this risky business have some safety precautions and do things in a way to avoid detection . But it is all gone now that you have shown the world their secrets.
I am sad for the miners they earn for small amounts and their also risky
makes one realize how much goes into these gemstones we wear
Who wears.....'WE' me or you?? Or no one i know. Useless stones to me.
@@jessstirland8338 How to self identify as a poor ^
I would rather have a blue sapphire, emerald, or ruby than a diamond. As far as personal jewelry preference.
Of course if the diamond is more valuable, i would chose that. Then sell it and buy what i like.
Actually some emerald ruby and sapphire can be worth more than diamond depend on the quality 😊
So you showing guys face and saying that he is smuggling emeralds into France? You think French authorities don't watch RUclips? And smuggler is not concerned about it? Hmm
The people he deals with can take care of that for him.
I don’t think they care and why would they?
Crime is so rife there nobody would show their method of transportation with cash/jewels either
If the french don't let them in im sure they can just head in another direction.
What the hell. I've done a lot of traveling overseas and they're not generally looking too hard for anything.
Domestically years and years ago I was traveling with two 30 round Glock mags still in the plastic in my carry on. TSA was digging thru my stuff and two state police were watching closely. Well dang it if there wasnt also a big fat bag O weed. They all clearly saw it and completely ignored it. Its great they knew what their priorities were. They let me put my mags in a bag and called up a bud and he came and got them and mailed them to me. The mags SUCK!! I should have through them in the trash!
It isn't like he's bringing in a ton of emeralds...
No one is gonna care about a few rocks.
Wow, what a quality documentary :)
Great and well put together. I subs. I do have some emeralds from Colombia (already set in a bracelet), and they are beautiful. The stones found only in a Colombian emeralds have the inner glow not found in other found elsewhere.
Exquisite! You know hes wealthy
Great show
Keep it up Very nice documentary appreciate your work
Outstanding
I do jewels but emeralds is my favorite after came Safire then diamonds, there is jamestones I can’t touched and see.

Australian Opals are the World's most beautiful gems that are alive colourful and man can't produce them as you can easily tell the fake ones.
Emeralds are gorgeous but they're monochrome and the synthetic production has kill the market but the natural king stone will hold its prices no mutter what the market is doing.
Black opal to be precise.
@@gregh4284Top crystal opal can also get dearer than black and vice versa.
I've seen some gorgeous crystal and black opals from S Australia so unique that my eyes got stuck and i could't talk to my mates from Taiwan.
Every Opal has its own pattern and colour that resembles uniqueness like the human fingerprints and always remains alive and vibrant.
@@gregh4284black opals are sold on Amazon😂
I can enjoy both stones !
I cannot argue with the statement that Opals are the most beautiful, but just like opal ranges from POTCH to flawless multidirectional pattern and black background, so too do emeralds go from crappy light green to flawless brilliant deep green.
I would argue that it is RARER to find a flawless emerald since they are by definition a VERY flawed gem.
( i say that while i admire my chunk of boulder opal that rivals the best black i've ever had ! For $500 i think i got it for a steal!)
Not just black, there is great boulder opal and coober pedy, mintabie and andamooka, too!
The deeper the green the more the value.

Emeralds are green beryls ,I think !!!
Rich in natural resources such as lithium, emeralds etc.but one of the countries of Latin America with no improvements
Are they all oiled and heated in the market I wonder
HA they do that at the mine / mining site
Watching, seems very interesting
Amazing
So these guys at the exchange are multi millionaires.
One trip to Hong Kong, 5,000 karets. 1 million euros.
Damn.
Wouldn't it be cool if someone brought back a high percentage of some of the profits from France to the miners in Columbia?
Let's go to Columbia and find the One Gem Free
It sounds already with his talk of a possible beam collapsing in the mine that the owner is too cheap to give worker safety his best interest. If that beam was steel it wouldnt break pissibly would it.
Amazing video ,very well done. But if you don't speak the language it's hard.
Does anyone know what year this was filmed
Me voy a conseguir mi Esmeralda cuando viva permanentemente en Colombia

not the best emeralds old brazilian are much better. today Zambian are better cost and color. good clarity too. save your money buy Zambian.
Wonderful film, absolutely fascinating. Small point but sincere. I couldn't listen to the voiceover all the way through in one go. Exactly the same pattern for each sentence with that slight whine, or minor key, at the end. Here's to more naturalistic voice creation with more variety being possible🙂
0:30 "in pursuit of this green diamond"... This show is stupidly wrong right away! Emeralds are not "green diamonds"... They are beryl.
Yes, and very soft unlike diamonds. Emeralds are fragile and special care must be given especially when set in rings.
I go to colombia twice per year to buy emeralds.most stones in this video are of very low quality.export taxes are 12.5 pct .the black market is dead.most of the bussiness is legit now.the biggest mine is 6 hours from bogota and no security problems.do some research and you will find its all dominated by international companys who sell the rough stones on international markets by auction.
This is the main reason I want lab grown jewels to thrive and to end this corrupt industry
EWWWW NO .>>>> NEVER buy lab made GARBAGE that is WORTHLESS its PROPAGANDA from industries like that funding anti mining slop and lies to push FAKE CRAP on you >>> WHILE RICH PEOPLE GET RICHER BUYING REAL WEALTH and things that are valuable, like gemstones.

All my University education a ‘worker “ was always contextually difficult to comprehend as the poor.
This one documentary has silently demonstrated the real meaning.
In the poor-rich cycle the worker is always surrounded by instruments of violence. Even the concept “workers’ is still very difficult to deflate from income and having something.
That's mainly the way it goes....what unnecessary suffering!

I think the church promotes slave morality in the indigenous peoples in Latin America.
I was using a pitchfork at 14 in a fish hole on a boat, loading cod in a big steel container, and while the tub was being lifted by a winch, the fish juice /slime would drip on you covering your face and the stinking rubber suit, passing from generation,it seem,..5.00 an hour, you do what you can to survive... money.
