    She sang with intention. She sang from and actors point of view. She was a singing actress. I think opera singers can learn from her commitment to intention. Love this

    Damn. The anguish and pain she expresses here are so intact with the lyrics that she breathes life to this role. Maria Callas is truly a great actress.

  • @EmilyGloeggler7984
    @EmilyGloeggler7984 5 лет назад +9

    Interesting that despite hating this role and not wanting to do it, she at least put forth the effort to learn it and give it more than just a solid technique. Hats off to her for that. She really did set the gold standard for vocal acting/physical acting in opera.

  • @jwhill7

    I feel that Callas was unsurpassed in her ability to find the poetry and drama in her roles and in their individual arias. She unselfishly placed all of her strength and even her weakness in the service of musical drama.

    Finally, here it is - the greatest opera VIDEO ever filmed! (inspirationally, despite 60-year-old equip) The young Maria, at supreme vocal & expressive peak, oozes with utter despair. Then her poor lost soul looks me right in the eyes and BEGS ME PERSONALLY for relief & salvation! I am emotionally shattered - I sob & weep again.

    Callas' prime was longer than any other Opera singer in history, from 1940 to 1958. And her vocal issue were due to the extreme weight loss of almost 100 pounds within a year, 1953 to 1954 to be exact. The weight loss was the root of her vocal issues, everyone else had vocal issues during their prime, even Sutherland had them...Callas, however, did not have any vocal issues before 1955 whatsoever, her technique was perfect, she was a solid assoluta before 1955, if somebody did not like her timbre is something totally different. And of course Onassis destroyed the rest of her voice once she met him.

    • @benlin8626
      @benlin8626 10 лет назад +9

      Actually, there have been some recent (early 2000's) arguments that Maria's vocal decline was because dermatomyositis (she was diagnosed later on in life with it, and two Italian researchers made a very convincing argument for it) - which can cause calcification of muscles all over the body, including the vocal chords. At the end of her life, she was had become a mezzo soprano because of it. She had every potential to create just as beautiful and breathtaking music singing mezzo soprano literature, but she wouldn't allow herself to admit defeat to "the voice" as she called it. As a result, she strained and tore herself in the final years of her career - which was made worse by her lack of consistent practice once she and Onassis entered full swing. The art she created during this time was stupendous, in fact I consider some of her best "Vissi D'arte's" to be the last ones she sang in public in 1964, but the effect it had on her voice was devastating (not even taking into account how far she pushed herself when performing), and left it in shreds.

    This performance I views when it was done live on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 50's. Metropolis conducted, George London was Scarpia. The cast was brought over from the met where I believe they performed the opera that day. This abridged version for TV started this abridged version after Cavaradossi is gone from Act II, and begins with Scapria and Tosca and ends with the Vissi D'arte. I still hv the original tape recording I made of it off the TV sound. Fortunately we have this clip. Unfortunately TV cameras at that time were not so good at close ups == distorting images. So glad we have it though.

    Callas' appeal is that of an uncultivated voice, You can readily identify the pureness and freshness of her voice. So many soprano voices are brittle and lack harmonics because they have been so cultivated. Callas and Anita Cerquetti are two of the best spinto sopranos I have ever heard. Sadly, we lost Cerquetti this year and hers was a natural voice, full of harmonics and dripping with beautiful tone. Cerquetti got her moment when she had replaced Callas at the Met when Callas was ill. If you must compare, compare technique and eveness of tone. A voice is God-given and its just a matter of preference,

    • @123pailin
      @123pailin 8 лет назад +1

      +Gina Colao Decker Cerquetti did not replace Callas at the Met. That was Leonie Rysanek who replaced her as Lady Macbeth after Bing fired Callas from the Met (yes he wa a goof). Antia Cerquetti replaced Callas in Norma after the infamous Norma walk-out in Rome (1958)......

    Someone here mentioned this was from the Ed Sullivan Show. I'm not so sure.Sullivan aired on CBS and unless I'm incorrect, she is performing under the baton of Dmitri Mitropoulos who conducted the NBC Orchestra. I also this scene contains George London as Scarpia. As far as comparing Sutherland to Callas....apples and oranges. Sutherland mastered the art of Bel Canto. La Callas....one either loves her or hates her. "I" adore her! She was the epitome of a Diva who may have had her vocal flaws, but LOOK AT HER. She commanded the stage and the music. Her depth of artistry is unparalleled.
