Southern Pacific had the Cascades, overnight to Oakland, and the Shasta Daylight which did the same route, getting to Oakland in the evening. I rode both of them, and the Shasta was my favorite. There was no through train to Southern California; passengers had to switch to either the San Joaquin Daylight or (as memory serves) the Owl night train, and that switching was usually done in Martinez, CA rather than Oakland. I took the SP Coast Daylight train from San Francisco once, in 1959. In those days the route was San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Very nice. It's cool to see the places I model from the train.
