- We don’t often show you this type of footage because it’s a little bit hard to watch.
Peace, named for our hope for her, is a five-year-old Shih Tzu who arrived on our last rescue. Peace was abjectly terrified due to her past experiences.
Prior to this video, she had already bitten Glenn, our Behavior and Training Manager, as well as fear defecated and urinated. These are all signs of extreme fear.
Watch her reaction as Glenn slowly tries to pick her up. Though hard to watch, this must be done to begin to desensitize her to kind human touch.
Watch as the dates of work progress and how much growth she makes in just a few days of hands on work and kindness. Though she bit at a team member’s sleeve just prior to the last video, you can see she is really beginning to trust and truly find peace.
Our dogs sometime have a lot to overcome, but they are resilient and will push through to the happy side of life. They really are our little superheroes!

One can only imagine the mistreatment these dogs have endured. Ive adopted three Shih Tzu mill dogs, two were terrified. After 7 years, one still quietly whimpers when I pick her up. Both have blossomed over the years into sweet little dogs. RIP my dear Carrie and Gracie. Thank you for all you do to help and home these dogs.

Sitting in the room on the floor with your back to them when first entering and not engaging, gets them used to your presence. It takes alot of time for them to not see you as a threat. I watch Rocky bring the anxiety and fear down through letting them see this. Then placing treats on the floor to see if they can receive treats. It is gradual.

That poor 🐕 is UNSOCIALIZED & FEARFUL which is totally understandable! Damned puppy mills are just as bad as 🐕 fighting bc it's absolutely cruel! I am so glad she eventually came around, takes a lot of work & trust!

The idea is to make a smaller space for the dog to be less overwhelming for the dog. Of course he is speaking kindly to her. Please understand that our dogs wellness is our number one priority and we will do nothing other than what is the best for them. Her incredible amount of growth in just a week’s time should be evidence that these methods do in fact work. Thank you for your concern.

My girlfriend sometimes gets dogs from a shelter to train them. In that time she adopted two dogs. One, a real street dog: destroying and stealing everything she can/could, and one small puppy which was raised by cats (after 2 years, he’s still mewing) and he was really, really shy (still is with strange people)
When I come in they both get crazy of happiness by seeing me (I know why, I give them treats sometimes). They always want a hug, a cuddle or something and start to calm down afterwards. They LOVE my small garden, that’s a place every dog should have….

I miss my Shih Tzu-Maltise mix my wife and I had for 10 1/2 years until he got very sick because he picked up and ate part of a hotdog someone had thrown on the ground. I loved him very much, and I took the very best care of him that I knew how to give him. I learned from him, and he went everywhere with me. Now, I'm saving my money for another Shih Tzu puppy, but I'm afraid my wife isn't going to let me have another dog. These little dogs are the most loving little dogs. It breaks my heart to know that some people mistreat them.

Hard to watch, but important. This is what happens with puppy mill and bad breeder survivors. These dogs have not been treated with kindness and humanity. They know nothing but being forced at everything they do. What this video shows is a calm, low energy man showing this dog that shes ok and she can adjust. The pooping and biting are her automatic responsives
These dogs are only touched mtwice: held down with force when raped/"mated", and when tgeir pupoies are stolen/taken away
Sorry, hit the wrong button.. This man is giving her brain the time to process that things are different. The old behavior is not needed. And that humans are ok, some even good. Look at the changes she had over time. Change and learning new behavior is hard. Be it animals or humans. Just ask someone in therapy. NMDR does important, life changing work.

We watched your techniques with other rescue puppy mill puppies. Thank you.. We currently have 2 rescued 6-7 years old female Maltese puppies. One is a nipper .. but both don't want to be touched and especially picked-up, We are trying your methods now.. I just wish you had a sequel to this puppy that you wore large gloves. Thanks again!!

People should stop abusing and abandoning dogs and cats. How would they feel if they were the ones abused and abandoned. If you can't look after them anymore please take them to an animal shelter where they will be cared for. Abusing, abandoning and torturing animals is a crime.
OMG, die arme kleine Maus hat so viel Angst. Meine Shih Tsu Lady war 7 Jahre und auch traumatisiert, als sie zu mir kam. Ich hatte noch glückliche und wundervolle 10 Jahre mit ihr mit sehr, sehr viel Liebe und einer Dankbarkeit, wie sie nur Hunde zeigen können. Ich würde die kleine Maus sofort zu mir nehmen, wenn es ginge.
No puppy are dog is mean when they are first born. It is what people do to them that makes them scared or mean. And want to bite. They are all babies. Just got to love these dogs and puppies.

I’ve had Shih Tzus all of my life,they’re such amazing little critters with huge personalities and heart.That hit deep inside to see that fear that shouldn’t exist.
Aw hope the little gal is doing well and has a better life now. She looks like my little boy. I cannot imagine hurting a little animal like this that depends on us to survive. They are like 4 year old toddlers. I get upset just accidentally stepping on their toe.

My first Shih Tzu was so scared when I first had her. She crawled on to my lap and adopted me as her mom. I held her the first year because she just shakes all the time. She passed away at the age of 17 and not a day goes by that I don’t think about my baby. I was so lucky she picked me.

She seemed more upset at the beginning when she was being approached by the man w the gloves and also heard other dogs barking. I think the 2 things together were too stimulating for her. She seemed calmer when the other dogs were quieter .

We have good news! Peace has been in an adoptive home for months now and has learned to trust and love and even snuggles with her mom ♥️

Puppy Mills are pure evil.
You need to sit with her and let her get used to a gradual touch. I did that when I volunteered at the RSPCA and they get used to you that way.

When we see the man with his arms outstretched, I can only hope that he is talking sweetly to the little dog, although we can't hear it on this video...the reason I say that is because the way he is going after the dog with those huge arms spread out wide, he looks absolutely terrifying.. I MYSELF WOULD RUN FROM HIM BECAUSE HE LOOKS LIKE HE INTENDS HARM. Don't you see that? Watch this video and imagine you are that tiny dog....it doesn't surprise me that this dog is peeing and pooping in fear, HE IS SCARED TO DEATH BECAUSE OF THE WAY HE IS BEING APPROACHED. I agree. Hope for Paws, Sidewalk Specials, DAR Animal Rescue, and Animal Aid India Unlimited are the ones that come to my mind when it comes to gentleness in approaching aggressive or stressed dogs.

I don't hate dog breeders, I only hate the ones that breed them only for the money and don't care for the breed and mistreat them poor living beings. And I am forever grateful for this kind people who rescue them.
