I was 8. I remember people went to the track and left and then suddenly everyone was scrambling to get back because they announced it would start really late.

I believe this was shown live late afternoon Saturday and on tape delay Sunday on ESPN. Such nostalgia you know something big was going down when ESPN broke out the special presentation intro. Also used for the MLB, NHL and NBA Playoffs

It wasn't shown live, ABC had already signed off before they got the track dried. It was tape delay only.

The remnants of a tropical storm moved through the central US delaying the race scheduled for a mid-day start on Saturday on ABC. The race didn’t start until late afternoon, ABC didn’t cover it live. It aired tape delayed on ESPN on Sunday. I was pissed, I had to listen on a very faint radio AM broadcast. Lots of great memories from the 90s though.

the race was rain-delayed... ABC was planning to cover the race live but didn't returned... instead ESPN will broadcast the race (tape-delayed) later on that night...
same thing on the 1985 Michigan 500 IndyCar race... NBC supposed to cover it... however they didn't return... and the race go underway, untelevised...
