- Drone video of historic Welch, West Virginia shot on February 28th, 2023. Flights around the McDowell County Courthouse built in 1893, and expanded in 1908. Shots of the first Parking Garage built in the United States, the Welch Municipal Parking Garage, opened September 1st, 1941.
Born here 1950. Grace Hospital. Lived here until 1972. Graduated Welch High School in 1968. Great place to grow up. Lots of good memories. Thanks for the video.
Very cool!
Thank you for this video. I'm from Welch and I miss home so bad. I can't stop crying but again thank you.
You’re very welcome! Hope it brings you great memories!
Never forget and never give up
Thank you for the beautiful video! I was born in Welch and graduated from Mount View HS. I get a little sentimental when it comes to McDowell County, but I visit often. Raised in Turnhole aka Thorpe WV and will always say, "THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME!!!"
You are more than welcome! Thanks for watching!
Love it!
Thank you
You're welcome
Great video, AWESOME quality.
Thank you!
Beautiful drone Tom!!!!
Thanks man!
Beautiful and professional! I still live here. I graduated from Welch High School shown in the video. We could go into town for lunch and we would argue about where to eat because there were so many places! Restaurants, hardware stores, grocery stores, clothing stores, shoe stores, beauty and barber shops, churches, theaters! And bars! When I got old enough to drink in bars, you could have had one drink in each bar and would have been drunk before you saw all of them! It was a wonderful place to grow up. Completely self sufficient.
I will be driving through Welch in a couple weeks (on vacation to tour Appalachia). I noticed a rail line going through town. Is it a busy active rail line?
@@HitsTownUSA There actually used to be a active rail line right into the downtown area. Super busy in the heyday. But now the only rail line is the mainline Norfolk/Southern system. It just goes by.
Felt like I just took a trip to my home town.
Thanks for the video share, well done. I remember back in the 70’s when there was shoulder to shoulder walking traffic on the streets of Welch. Good that it’s kept. Again, thanks.
Wow Tom, this is great! Very nice shots and I love how you put them all together.
Definitely capturing some history of our homelands. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks man! Hoping to do more of these!
I have been driving to Welch for about 7 years now.
It reminds me of where my grandma is from, a once great coal mining area. There isn't a house left where my grandma grow up, they killed it.
I want to learn all I can about McDowell, as I feel moved to fight for it.
This is a place worth saving. These families are every bit as deserving as in Charleston.
They just need a chance.
Nothing there worth moving for.
I was born here, (Stevens Clinic) in 1955. By 1956 Dad moved us to Cleveland OH for a job. There was nothing here as far as work and my Grandmother told him to RUN!!!!!
Beautiful town, just needs some power washing. Gorgeous buildings. God Bless America.
lol
Excellent work! I’ve always liked Welch. I rode through with my Dad in the mid 80’s delivering a DNR truck to Panther State Forest and the place was hopping in the summer. Another time when I had my own wheels I took a daylong drive with nowhere to go and reached Welch after dark and enjoyed some nice Christmas lights throughout town. I took Jax down there and it fascinated him. He could see the history and the potential on display. I feel like the place is one good fortune away from a rebirth.
Hopefully the tourism industry will help with this. More ATV riders all the time down here!
I live in Oceana, so I visit often. I have started a mushroom farm, but I want to expand my business. I don't understand why we cannot convert all of the roofs of the buildings into vertical farms. The food could be sold at a extremely low price due to the use of automated systems or the food could be donated to the needy. The farms could be tended to by people who are in recovery, work release, or for people who are simply curious about how a automated hydroponic system works. If anyone has the ear of the right people, please reach out to me because I have many decades of personal experience and I would love to help WV rise to meet the future. I have so many ideas, but it takes a village to get any idea off the ground.

Love it🙂
My county seat ❤
It was a Tuesday morning. Where was everybody? My Granddad was Minister at the Methodist Church in the 50s and I was born in Fairmont.
Empty buildings , when they vote Democrat.
Home for a lot of years..
