    I agree with a lot of your comments here, especially about their market position and that they need to get their communication in order. Reddit is not the most appropriate place for these discussions. A website FAQ, especially about the lack of components for the A5X (which again was posted on Reddit) or explanation of why it is new and innovative (post on Reddit about being both modular and thinner, possibly cannibalizing the A5 Slim) would benefit them greatly. What I don't agree with you on was the seeming dismissal of their attempts to set and meet timelines publicly (although not advisable). Remarkable waited years to release a new device and still didn't update the RM2, keeping it very close to the vest. Fortunately, they have been able to update their internals and keep selling the devices, at least that is my understanding. Supernote with the A6X2 and hopefully soon the A5X2 is still the only manufacturer I know of with a modular design. That in and of itself is innovative. As always, thanks again for jumping in to the conversation. I always enjoy your videos. Sorry for the length, extra time on the train. 😁

    This issue, their post on Reddit, and their recent increase in cracking down (banning/deleting posts) on users posting any criticism or comparison of Supernote products to competitors really shows that Ratta is in distress for some reason.
    It’s given me pause in further supporting their products. It’s sad, because their product imho is significantly better than other products on the market for my needs. I hope they can turn things around.

      If the new A5X2 checks all the boxes in what users are looking for, they'll opt for it instead of any other contenders. I was strongly considering the RPP, the Boox Go (had it for a while), the Boox Note Max, and the Penstar, but they all had one or two features that put me off the purchase. I had bad experience with the Boox UI and ecosystem, and the Remarkable PP does not have a micro-SD or the ability to transfer files via USB-C to a thumb drive, and that was a deal-breaker. Supernote ticks ALL the boxes.

    While I like my A5X device and I am a fan of Supernote and Ratta's overall approach, the current situation is just disappointing.
    Ratta is not a big company but they aren't new to the market either. They have already released a few devices so there should be know-how and experience in how to do it. The A5X2 appears to be an overly ambitious estimate of capabilities and supply chain dependability, which I would not expect from Ratta.

    I've been sitting on the fence for a long time about buying an e-ink device. I am a choir director and singer who is sick of carrying around large amounts of paper and re-sorting them. I also want to be able to replace my analogue notebooks and keep all my handwritten notes and music in the same place. I want as large a screen as possible, fast refresh, preferably colour (I like to have colour annotations in my conducting scores) and very flexible arranging of pdfs, so that I can quickly go from one to the next. I would prefer to turn the page with a tap, not a swipe, as that seems potentially risky to me, if I don't get the gesture right in the moment. I would like the possibility of using a bluetooth page turner, if I have problems with a reliable gesture. I was excited by the Remarkable Paper Pro, but I'm worried about the OS not having the ability to reliably stay on the right page and not having the ability to link documents and pages. I think I could maybe hack it to get the functionality I require, but that seems like a ridiculous thing to have to do with a new device. So I either go for Boox - I'm worried about the longevity of the device and it receiving updates into the future, as the company seems to have a throwaway mentality, or I forgo colour annotations and choose Supernote, which I think would do everything I need out of the box. But now I'm worried that there must be a fundamental flaw with the device, as the delay seems pretty sketchy to me. Maybe I'll just wait another year or two and see if anyone can actually produce the device I want, or if Remarkable can fix their OS.

    I was a happy A5X user before I sold it in anticipation of the A5X2. I am a happy A6X2 user today. I bought it with the plan of using it together with the A5X2. With the experience of using the A5X, I knew there were instances when I didn’t take the A5X with me feeling it was too large for the trip/occasion/whatever. Now, having used the A6X2 for 7 months I can confirm my thinking was correct and in fact I have found the smaller A6X2 to be more useful/handy than I had expected. So now i am questioning my need for a A5X2 while at the same time beginning to question what is going on at Ratta and do I even what a A5X2. Will the A5X2 be the product of our dreams/expectations? I already question some of the design choices they’ve made based on the earlier posted images. For example the 1/2 folio, the tapered edges, the hardware pen loop, the unequal frame dimensions, etc. I just keep coming back to the same question: why couldn’t they have just made an A5 sized A6X2?!!!

I thought about waiting for the A5, but RUclipsrs like you correctly predicted it would be delayed, so I’m glad I didn’t wait.
    The small A6 isn’t always ideal for my purposes, but the tablet has been amazing because of the platform. It is so much better than Boox for reading, annotating, exporting my annotations, and getting in the zone when I’m studying. When I get the A4, it will be really nice to still have the ultra portable A6 in some scenarios.

      @@0xKruzr It is a bit subtle. There are two ways to annotate pdf on boox: 1) handwrite on the margin of pdf and save it with the whole pdf, or 2) highlight the sentences and use the keyboard to input your thoughts (which is quite annoying), and you can save these separately. What Supernote can do is the so-called Digest function. You can bracket the sentence, and then handwrite on a separate blanket note page, and you can save it and export the quotes with your handwritten notes. I own a boox, but Digest is the way I like to annotate academic paper. Until RM or Boox find their way to develop the function like Digest (which I feel like is not at their high priority), I will silently wait for Supernote A5X2 or even A4.

    I bought the A6X2 in February this year and loved it so much I wanted the bigger version and was willing to get the A5X but the stopped shipping, but I did join the anxious queue of people waiting. I finally got the BOOX NA3 (black and white) and very happy with it so far. When the A5X2 eventually ships, I’ll wait till I’ve gotten enough mileage from my BOOX before I buy one. I was not too concerned with the delays since this stuff tends to happen and I am new to the E Ink world and there are very many options and so hopefully one day I may settle on a product that I can commit to. However, the A6X2 is really good, but I won’t be buying the A5X2 since there was no real indication as to when it would be ready.

    I was interested in buying my first e-ink tablet in February. I originally wanted an A4 sized device, but after looking through all the options, I couldn't find good options for that size. I found reviews on supernote, and it matched my use case well, and I liked idea of the ceramic pen, hardware, and modularity.
    A5X2 was said to release March/April, but then on March they delayed it to May/June, and I was fine with that wait. Then came May, and they delayed it to Q3. I decided I'd wait again. Then they narrowed it down to September, which gave me hope. September comes, and they just announce some specs and that they won't give any more possible release dates. I said I'd give it one more month, and then I'm just going to buy a Boox or Remarkable if it doesn't release. I was just about to buy a boox go, but now I saw that the note max is coming out, which was the original size I wanted, so I'm just going to get that instead now especially since their updated design seems much better than their past devices.
    At this point, I just want to have an e-ink tablet that I can use.

    The modularity offered by the latest Supernote and in the A5X2 (when/if it arrives) puts it into a different league than other vendors. These devices are expensive, for the price of the cheapest e-ink tablet I could buy a stack of paper notebooks, probably enough to last my lifetime. Will the boox I buy today still be useful in 5 years? Probably the battery will be dead or swollen enough to destroy the tablet. The modularity of the supernote means I could keep the same device going much much longer. We also desperately need a platform that is open to 3rd party developers if we really want to see rapid improvement in software features and Ratta is the only vendor making noises about allowing 3rd parties in.

    Thank you for producing this video and keeping up with he A5x2's development. I think this is a useful analysis but if I understood it, there is a misrepresentation in the beginning which might be important to rectify given its substance, considering how 'contentious' the discussion of the release has become (makes me realize how privileged I am to use the word contentious here given the state of geopolitics ). Specifically, you quote the first two lines of the second block of text (starting with 'Supernote is currently"). You analyze this as , "this doesn't mean we [Supernote] don't have those issues ...it just means that yes, they do have financial difficulties caused by stock shortages[...]". Do I understand correctly that in the absence of an affirmative rejection of 'financial difficulties caused by stock shortages' at all (while they did affirm that such was not the cause of their 'difficult period') , that you assumed there must be financial difficulties caused by stock shortages? If I understand the post correctly, it does not confirm these issues (while indeed does not reject their possibility), instead it affirms that any such issues are not the cause of this 'difficult period' and it even states that they have prepared a batch. As a counterfactual, they could have stated this as an acknowledgment of the issues with stock shortages in the initial days of the Nomad to ensure the customer base would note assume the same about the A5x2 considering how contentious it has been. Alternatively, it can just be imprecisely phrased (as I believe Roderick has hinted to in his own analysis). Please, disregard this comment if I misunderstood your position, but I think you risk fueling the flames of 'contention' by claiming material instability about Supernote without it being justified explicitly by the company itself. In general I would not comment on such an error but I only problematize this because this exact claim, unsubstantiated, has already been charged against Supernote by the Reddit community as part of the reactivity and emotionality around the release and has become a part of the discourse sparking contention around SN. In short, as a result of the delay and the social dynamics of the consumer base there have been wholly unsubstantiated charges of material instability against SN and this has been not only inflammatory for the community but has a potentially negative impact on the company's image as a whole. I do not think this is warranted and your analysis , while largely useful and appreciated, given its assumption and overall tone, risks contributing to that.

      @MyDeepGuide  15 дней назад +5

      I read what they write and give my take on their posts. If they want to be and not spread doubts of such nature, then they should be more mindful of their communication. This is a public post the company made, and absolutely no one forced them to mention either the financial nor the parts shortage. They are also not denying those difficulties either.
      So no, it's not my responsibility to paint anyone's posts into colors of any sort. I read it, and share what the post means to me. When you have a convoluted post like this, then it leaves room for interpretation.
      In addition, I spent exactly zero of my time or my own thoughts about any assumptions or conclusions regarding their financial state. I commented on the problematic formulation of that statement, and later on focused on the parts shortage, as this is something that they themselves have confirmed as a problem earlier in the year.

    • @TheDslom001
      @TheDslom001 15 дней назад +1

      First, I want to be clear about my intention of the comment as engagement as opposed to confrontation. Second, I agree with the necessity for clearer communication as I also agree that it is not your responsibility to construe the post one way or another. With that said, I disagree with your final statement about the absence of assumptions regarding their financial state and this only being a comment on their problematic formulation. The reason being that you stated in your video that they do have financial difficulties caused by stock shortages. This is a clear assertion about SN's financial situation based on speculation derived from previous communications (as you have mentioned) which they have rejected, unequivocally, as a cause for their difficulties in this post. To interpret their message which specifies that shortages are not the cause of their current struggles, as an admission to the presence of shortages, when there is no confirmation of those shortages in the post itself is constructing a specific narrative about SN beyond the discursive limits of the message itself. I understand how you might arrive at that conclusion given previous communication from several months ago so I do not fault you for arriving at that conclusion. But it is not a neutral statement and has already been reposted onto reddit and caused quite a stir. This is the reason I have commented, not to problematize your analysis (which I still hold to be well reasoned) but to flag an inflammatory assumption (which might be well reasoned) , but is still inflammatory and an assumption (regardless of semantic ambiguity of SN's post )all the same. My reasoning as to why it's important to mention assumptions is because of your position as an authority on information about e readers/ writers who is positioned as relatively neutral (which you yourself have alluded to) as is exemplified by the reddit re-posting of this video not but a couple hours of its initial post. In short, I understand how you arrived at the conclusion that you did and do not fault you, but because the only mention of a shortage in the message was in terms of its not affecting the current challenges, to assert that the shortage is present as based on that message is necessarily a speculation unsubstantiated by any current communication from SN, and given the reach of your voice I thought you might want to be made aware of this .

    Thanks for your honest appraisal of this unfortunate situation. I own an A5X and I depend on it for my consulting business every single day. The device is excellent but their pens are total garbage. I mention that because I think it's very telling, especially alongside all the breakage issues reported with the glass screens on the A6X2. My point? They don't really know what they're doing in regards to materials engineering and hardware design and testing. The A5X was a happy accident and they're unable to push that envelope further without creating catastrophic issues. I believe they learned this with their pens and the A6X2 (the parts on the writing end of my pen literally crumbled into pieces with very little wear and tear, as did the replacement parts sent to me by Ratta). I simply no longer trust them and I wouldn't buy a new Supernote until it's been in the field at least a year. Now I'm looking to pivot to another device. Probably the Boox Go 10.3. At this point, they just need to release a clear statement. Will people be able to buy the A5X2 as a Christmas present? I think that (and obviously the fact they've delayed it so many times already) is a huge part of why people are becoming very frustrated. Say it's not coming this year - fine, I'll wait and buy it later. But I've got stuff to buy and stuff to wish for before Christmas, so maybe just rip off the band-aid and come clean already.

    Outstanding commentary, Voija. You've spoken for thousands of dedicated Supernote fans and have accurately expressed our frustrations as well. For me personally, the A5X2 would be the only e-ink device that would tick all the boxes - replaceable battery, integrated micro-SD, OTG USB-C connections, a very user-friendly UI, and a brilliant screen with a likely superb writing feel. WHERE IS IT, Supernote? WHY the long wait?

  • @kittencure

    It looks like the Supernote A5X2 is going to have almost the same hardware specs as the PineNote, and that one just became available recently. So I am anticipating the sourcing issues to be solved pretty soon with the Supernote as well.

    I am rather disappointed with Ratta deciding to backtrack on their previous transparency. I do agree that perhaps they had been too open but having done that, I feel they needed to stick to that openness and explain exactly what is going on. They haven't done themselves any favours because now it has (maybe wrongly) resulted in concern about the future of the company as a whole. Perhaps they didn't help matters either by trying to change the design of the A5X2 so much. I think most users would have been happy with just a larger version of the Nomad.
    However, the continued delay in releasing the A5X2 has done me a favour as I gave up waiting and bought the Nomad instead. I discovered that the Nomad was the perfect device for carrying with me for planning/quick notes but for my study notes, an A5 size would not actually be big enough anyway. So I got the RM Paper Pro which is the perfect size for study and the colour annotation is very helpful. I do prefer the software on the Supernote but the RM lets you organise your files so that you can have a book ePub or PDF in the same folder as a notebook, which is better than the Supernote way.

    I wondered if you knew about and would mention the atmosphere on the official subreddit that led to recent rule changes and the launching of an unofficial supernote subreddit one week ago. Discussion of any other device in any context is now not allowed. Many criticisms (some constructive, some not) and all comparisons are being deleted, and users are being banned. This is fueling the anger people have that they are switching to a policy of non-communication like other developers. That openness was the main thing about them that put them head and shoulders over other companies. Now when you look at the subreddit, everything looks business as usual, when it is clearly not.

  • @Sederiq

    Why is it taking so long to plug everything together? I'd assume that Ratta don't assemble the devices themselves. Maybe they reach an end of contract with current manufacturer and can't negotiate new terms. Maybe they found a new manufacturer, which unexpectedly went out of business. Maybe the manufacturer of one of the components has raised the price for the component and now it doesn't fall into the expected retail price based on market research. Maybe their bank account was suspended for some reason. But as we don't know the exact reason, we can chose any one that makes us comfortable, the result stays the same. People created their own expectations. People demanded Ratta to constantly update their release dates. And now people are upset that someone didn't meet their expectations, which they themselves played a big part in forcing into existence.

    I wonder if Remarkable monopolised the components (like the screen) in their manufacturing of their new device? Or even the factory time (if they're made in the same place)? It would be inappropriate for Ratta to 'blame' a competitor for this, so maybe that's why they can't state the real reason(s). Just a guess, no insider knowledge.

    The device will be ready when it's ready. People whining on Reddit can go buy other of the many amazing devices that are on offer.
    I'm not worried in the slightest about Ratta surviving this. Their software is so ahead for everyone that loves writing that the device will sell like hot cakes and will have people coming back.
    That is, until someone comes with a superior software, which would threaten Ratta anyway, A5X2 or not.
    Again, time is not an issue in a market that is releasing devices all the time. At any time, users will start switching devices. Brand loyalty doesn't exist and current brands have no way to lock users in like Apple or Microsoft does. Whoever brings the best user experience for a particular use case wins.

    Complaining and reassessing what was shared 26 days ago will not help speed up the release of the A5X2. Developing hardware, especially when custom components are involved, can be very challenging in terms of timing. This is the cost of innovation, and while it can be frustrating, people will need to be patient. If they can’t wait, there are other products available.

    • @SpikedSilver
      @SpikedSilver 15 дней назад +12

      I have heard this argument repeatedly. Patience would not be a factor if Ratta didn’t announced their product and get 2 years off schedule. That is abysmal planning.
      It’s one thing to announce it when it’s done and then say, we’ve been working on this for over 2 years or however long, and we had many stumbling blocks, but we happy to announce the device now. What they have done is just make people impatient and annoyed.

      It's not about speeding up delivery or development, it's about keeping tabs on where things stand, from time to time, so that people know how to form their decisions.

    •  15 дней назад +3

      Ok so they announced it early, it is taking longer to make than they expected, and continue to face technical challenges. Do you think are delaying for the pleasure of delaying? What do you want them to do, release a product that is not ready and get even more people complaining? I don’t see any benefit in people continuously complaining and reminding them they have shared too early about their plan. If you ever worked in an innovating industry theist is not such a thing than on time delivery and technical and logistics issues can really affect plans. The only effect those complains and comment can have is put more stress on and like everyone under stress the risk is to break. I do believe they are delaying because they want to build a good product that doesn’t exist, hammering them because it takes way longer doesn’t help in any way.

    •  15 дней назад

      @@MatteoCampinoti94 sounds like they should have done it this way. I bet many people asked them about the next A5 and they could not help to leak info. Bad strategy for sure. Frankly, I don’t think Ratta needs to respond to all these entitled people on Reddit, Facebook and RUclips.
    I also think your comment about what is going on inside the company is laughable, to make that comment without facts is just laughable.
    Some of the posts are now just getting ridiculous.
    Have seen this happen with cycling gear as well..
    RUclips commentators can all have an opinion, but as they get more followers the need then is to keep posting regularly.
    They can’t say “oh well things are great and nothing has changed”.
    No, they will keep posting hot and cold on brands as it’s more about views.
    This may seem harsh, but I am more cynical about people who have the patience of a fish as compared to a company who is innovative and fighting in a very tough electronic component market.
    If you can’t wait, just buy something else and move on.
